Patricia St. John - Prolific Writer

Patricia St. John's children's books have been extremely popular with generations of kids. Her first book, The Tanglewood's Secret, was written as an entry in a writing contest at the suggestion of her sister. It was a simple story she had written for children she knew, and she never dreamed that it would be picked up by a publisher and that it would bless thousands of children around the world.

It was my privilege to meet Patricia several years before she went to Heaven. She was one of the sweetest people I have ever met. I also knew her sister, Hazel, who has also now gone to Heaven. It was also my privilege to get to know her sister-in-law, Janet St. John.

This lens will be mostly about her books, two of which I have reprinted and which you can purchase on my online store or on Amazon.com (see below).

Patricia's Autobiography: Telling Her Own Story

In 1993, Patricia wrote her autobiography. It's a thrilling account of her life from childhood right up to the sunset years. Probably the part you will find most interesting is the account of her early years in Morocco trying to find an inroad into the hearts of the predominantly muslim people. She had several things against her. First, she was alone. Second, she was a woman in a male-dominated society. And third, she was introducing a strange religion. But she had one major factor in her favor: God! You'll be gripped by the stories she tells of those early years and how God used her abilities as a nurse to slowly gain trust among the people.

Several years ago I discovered that this book was out of print. I contacted the publisher and they said there were no plans to reprint, but they didn't want to give up their rights to the book (Patricia had signed a contract which gave them exclusive rights for a certain number of years, and that time wasn't up yet).

However, I continued to contact them and ask for the right to publish, and they finally graciously allowed Kinglsley Press to print. it. I hired an artist to design a cover, retypeset the whole thing myself, incorporated previously unprinted photographs graciously loaned by her Patricia's sister-in-law, and sent it to the printer. And the rest, as they say, is history. Now YOU can get your hands on this great book.

Her First Book: The Tanglewood's Secret

As related above, this book is the one that gave Patricia her start and launched her writing career. It's a delightful book which tells the story of Philip and Ruth, 10 and 8, who are staying with their rather strict Aunt Margaret in the south of England while their parents are overseas during the late 1940's. In a struggle to learn to overcome her fiery temper and selfish spirit, Ruth is led to the discovery of a very important Shepherd who can and does teach her (and others) how to be good. The story contains beautiful and uplifting examples of what can happen when we let ourselves be found by Him.

Her Best Known Book: Treasures of the Snow

In her teenage years, Patricia spent some time in the Swiss Alps. It was these snow-capped mountains that gave Patricia the setting for a book about forgiveness. The story centers around Annette, who feels she can never forgive Lucien, a neighboring boy, for causing her young brother, Danny, to fall down a precipice and break his leg. Annette goes out of her way to make sure everyone else hates Lucien, too. But then some surprising things start to happen to both of them. In the end, hatred and bitterness give way to forgiveness and friendship.

Years after the book was published, a film was made. This is now available in DVD format and continues to be a favorite for Christian families.

Rainbow Garden

Really cool story for kids....

This neat little story about a self-centered, stuck-up, spoiled city girl who undergoes an amazing transformation during a prolonged stay in the country with a Christian family is a good example of the ease with which Patricia St. John could weave basic Christian truths into a captivating story. Adults enjoy this story as much as the children they read it with. Though first published over forty years ago, the book still appeals to today's children. The simple but believable conversion story is bound to have an impact on their young minds.
