Spiritual Genius or Fraud?
Whatever he was as a person - What I've seen of his writings is quite insightful. But his extravagant claims about where he got his insights are probably all fake. I would not be surprised if the main source for most of his teachings was a combination of theosophical books and Indian culture.
Mysticism versus metaphysics - Paul Brunton quote
Paul Brunton, The Wisdom of the Overself, Chapter X
Because it is immensely easier to find reasons for our feelings than feelings for our reasons and because the search for personal satisfaction is immensely more attractive than the search for impersonal intellectual truths, mysticism has always received more adherents than metaphysics.

The Maharshi and His Message, Paul Brunton
Paul Brunton book review
The Maharshi and His Message
Amazon Price: $1.79 (as of 02/14/2012)![]()
Perhaps the most famous of Paul Brunton's books. Why? Because it introduces one of the most famous of Indian sages of the 20th century to the West.
Brunton has been accused of fitting the Maharshi's message to his own. Whether that's true or not, this is a spiritual classic that has set many people on the spiritual path, and will undoubtedly continue to do so.

The hidden teaching beyond yoga, Paul Brunton
Yoga book review
The hidden teaching beyond yoga
Amazon Price: $17.25 (as of 02/14/2012)![]()
Spiritual classic, which puts the discipline of yoga in it's place on the spiritual path.
All in the eye of the beholder
This is a quality all real spiritual teachers have, in my opinion. It was true of H.P. Blavatsky and of Jiddu Krishnamurti too.
This quality makes it particularly hard to make a good biography. After all - did Paul Brunton lift that table by his hands to make the one person he knew would NOT close his eyes think for himself? Or did he do it to make the other people follow him?
My Father's Guru: A Journey Through Spirituality and Disillusion
I personally think it's very unlikely that someone who has lived in India would not know the difference between Hindi and Sanskrit. As for the table... I don't know.

Amazon Price: $215.05 (as of 02/14/2012)![]()
Disillusioned biography of Paul Brunton from the perspective of someone who grew up around him.

- I believe that Paul Brunton,Edgar Cayce, Robert Monroe, Alexandra David Neel and many many others of this ilk are brave, adventuresome pathfinders who are paving the way for the rest of us who wish to follow in their footsteps to who knows where. How exciting. I thank the universe for them!

- I was raised on the Paul Brunton books since I was 14. I'm now 55. It's all Real Logical the meditation on "Who am I" which concludes with the supplication of Paul Brunton's Overself. I personally never came in contact with Paul Brunton's Overself, But I did have my head drawn backwards and also to my chest Mysteriously when concluding the exercise. I didn't do it, it wasn't me drawing my head back and to my chest. The Overself? I don't know. I read "My father's Guru", and yes, it was highly wrong of Paul Brunton to have this trusting family move to Uruguay during the Cuban Missle Crisis, because Brunton psychically foresaw nuclear war with The Soviet Union. But, does it make a 4000 meditation exercise wrong, because a man was wrong with psychic prognostication. I want to believe that God can be reached whilw we're still in the flesh. I don't know what Brunton actually experienced, and I hope his whole motive wasn't just trying to sell his books. Bruntonis is dead, and God is his judge now, as He will be for us all, Alan Zimmerman

- I agree. We should not focus on the(an) author's personal life. In fact I do not know much of his personal life. His books are very inspiring and exposition is clear. THAT is the thing that matters.

- I'm 55, Lesley. I followed the Paul Brunton book series since I was 14. I didn't find Brunton's Overself as he described, although I did have my head mysteriously drawn back and to my chest, while concluding Brunton's "What am I" meditation exercise. I sure that Brunton would say that I had not yet attained the Grace of the Overself. But, Christ, Leslie, how many years does one have to meditate to come into contact with The Overself? And in "My Father's Guru", Brunton actually sent that poor family to Uruguay during The Cuban Missle crisis, so they would avoid the nuclear war that Brunton psychically foresaw. I want to believe, Leslie, there would be nothing more wonderful than a pathway to God while were still in the flesh. Brunton's method is logical. But some things leave me cold, it's like Madame Blavatsky's statement "To rule man, you must deceive him." So you see, I'm still searching ardently, and next month I'm going to pick up a CD from the Unexplainable Store that has binaural beats for astral projection. Best wishes.
