Blu-ray Movies Starring Paul Newman

As I write this, Paul Newman's blu-ray movies number just five. I read somewhere that Paul Newman made 60 movies in his lifetime so that leaves quite a few to come, that is if they are eventually transferred to blu-ray. Many of Mr. Newman's works are older films and, therefore, not what you might consider blu-ray material. However, as blu-ray technology continues to gain ground in sales, it will have to welcome both the best blu-ray movies of the current times and the classic movies on blu-ray.

Many of the films that Paul Newman made during his career are great movies, award-winning classics like Somebody Up There Likes Me; The Long, Hot Summer; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; The Young Philadelphians; Exodus; The Hustler; Hud; Hombre; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; The Sting; The Verdict; The Color of Money; The Road to Perdition and Cars. This page will introduce you to the four Paul Newman blu-ray movies that are available on September 20th, 2009. Can you guess which ones they are?

You will also find links to more reading about and reviews of Paul Newman's blu-ray movies as well as links for buying them from Amazon. I have also included some information about the Paul Newman: The Tribute Collection which, unfortunately, is not available on blu-ray. You will also find a wee debate about whether you think that all movies should be released on blu-ray. I would love to hear what you have to say in that regard. Whether you were thrilled or disappointed with Paul Newman on blu-ray, please take a minute to let everyone reading this page know what you think about his movies, blu-ray or otherwise.

Definitely one of the most memorable performances of Paul Newman's career, I often see Cool Hand Luke quoted on lists of Top 10 movies. It is the story of a rebel against the institution with moments in it that have, over the years, become classics.

Amazon Customer Review:

"My favorite movie of all time," says Stan. He goes on to explain that he watched it when he was twelve, he taped it later on and watched it 50 times in a few years. He asks what is it in Cool Hand Luke that is so moving? He answers, "Paul Newman's performance. Lucas Jackson is one of the most psychologically complex characters in the history of cinema, and Newman, criminally denied the Oscar for this film, makes him seem larger-than-life without saying much." -- Stan of Portland, Oregon

Blu ray Review: Cool Hand Luke | High-Def Digest
'Cool Hand Luke' is a classic of anti-establishment cinema. It's a still-tough and gritty film, enlivened by a literate script and another great performance by Paul Newman. This Blu-ray is quite good, with excellent video and some slick new supplements. Sadly, the audio is mono only, but that caveat aside, 'Cool Hand Luke' is an easy recommend for a purchase on Blu-ray and certainly, if you've never seen it before, it's a must-rent.
Cool Hand Luke Blu-ray Review By DVDTown.com
With "Cool Hand Luke" you get your money's worth. You get engaging characters, an involving plot, exciting action, touching relationships, first-rate acting, an intriguing parable, and a slate of thoughtful ideas. If you can't appreciate some or any of these points, perhaps you can take comfort from Strother Martin's character, the prison warden, who tells us "What we've got here is failure to communicate." But I figure most viewers will have little failure understanding the movie and its motives. They communicate brilliantly.
Cool Hand Luke - Blu-ray Disc Review | High Def Disc News
This was originally shot on Panavision 35mm using Technicolor which needs to be taken into consideration when assessing the video quality here at this 41-year-old film. The original negatives seem to have been taken extremely well care of because we get a very nice Hi-Def transfer here from Warner Brothers.
Audio Quality on this release is in Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono sound. Yes I said mono and I know at first that might scare some of you away but keep in mind this a 1967 film (around 41 years old now).

This music score by Argentine composer Lalo Schifrin was nominated for an Oscar in 1967. He combines bluegrass, symphonic and rhythmic jazz into a music CD soundtrack that is full of "surprising twists and turns, crackling with energy." This CD is dynamic; the re-edited Tar Sequence went on to become the Eyewitness News theme music across the United States.

"This is one of the finest film scores ever. What is on this disc is one of Lalo Schifrin's most creative scores." This is the music but NOT the soundtrack as it does not contain the lyrics heard in the movie. If you want to hear Paul Newman singing Plastic Jesus or the road crew singing to Luke as he re-digs the Boss' hole you will want to purchase the first CD, made in 2001. Discontinued by the manufacturer, fortunately this CD is available to collectors through sellers on Amazon.

Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid (1969)

You never met a pair like Butch and the Kid. They're taking trains, they're taking banks and they're taking one piece of baggage!

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Music Original Score for a Motion Picture that is not a Musical, Best Music Song (Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head), and Best Writing Story and Screenplay Based on Material Not Previously Published or Produced. It was also nominated for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Sound.

This classic Paul Newman movie may just be one of the most popular westerns ever made. It won an Academy Award and is a combined adventure, romance and comedy story which tells the true story of two of the Wild West's outlaws. Butch Cassidy (played by Newman) is quick to come up with get rich quick schemes and Sundance (played by Robert Redford) is quite phenomenal with a gun. Together they are bank and train robbers until they get tired of running from the law and head for Bolivia with Sundance's girlfriend (played by Katherine Ross). They are two nicest bad-guys in the West.

Amazon Customer Review:

Mr. Gendzel's review highly recommended this movie for the whole family. He said, "The film looks sharp in Blu-ray's 1080p resolution, even in the sepia tones shot for some of the scenes." The blu-ray disc has worthwile extras and featurettes and a Director's commentary. "All in all, a fun film, well worth getting on Blu-ray." -- Jack Gendzel 'Rock Fan, in Marblehead, United States

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Blu-ray Disc Review | High Def Disc News
The movie itself scores extremely well; the video and audio components of the blu-ray more middle-of-the-road.
Blu-ray Review: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid | High-Def Digest
Talk about the release of this blu-ray was not great and High-Def was somewhat lenient given the age of the movie. The reviewer said the video is "not the completely unmitigated disaster I anticipated, but I certainly can't give it high marks." Sound wasn't great either but at least "dialogue is always discernible, so at least that's a plus." The blu-ray contained a strong extras package. The 'bottom line' on this movie is that it is best for fans of Paul Newman.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Blu-ray) : DVD Talk Review of the Blu-ray
With a tight and well written script, impeccable direction and wonderful performances by the leads, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a classic western and an enjoyable buddy flick. While this Blu-ray disc looks better than the early SD releases, the transfer doesn't hit a home run. Still worth watching and owning however, this disc gets a light recommendation.

The Towering Inferno Blu-ray (1974)

Starring Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, William Holden and Faye Dunaway

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"When I bought my blu-ray player and high def t.v. there were a number of titles in my dvd collection that were prime candidates for getting the blu-ray treatment. THE TOWERING INFERNO was at the top of the list and I'm happy to report they did a stellar job. For instance, little bits of dialogue never understood before are now clearly audible. In addition, the intricate design/pattern of many of the costumes are now eye poppingly clear.

If I had to choose one scene that shows off the blue ray transfer best, it's the scene where Paul Newman, Jennifer Jones and the two kids take turns climbing down the busted staircase railing. A total audio/visual experience. For instance water from a pipe busted in the explosion is raining down on them and the nearby exposed brick wall. The sound of the water is sooooooooooo realistically clear and sharp you'll check to see if its raining in your living room.

If you like classic action flicks on blu-ray this an absolute must for your collection.

Another treasure from 20th Century Fox's massive and largely impressive vault, The Towering Inferno sets Blu-ray ablaze with a presentation sure to satisfy all audiences. Boasting a strong 1080p transfer, a suitably good lossless soundtrack, and a wealth of bonus materials that run the gamut of the film's production, The Towering Inferno is a disc well worth warming up to. Highly recommended.

Do you think that all movies should be released in blu-ray format?

Most of Paul Newman's movies were made before high definition television came along. As a matter of fact, some were even done in black and white. This means that most of these movies are not going to be top quality audio and visual presentations for your home theatre.

Online, I have read a mix of reviews about these blu ray movie releases. Some people are very disappointed with the quality but I cannot help wondering what they expected from a film made in 1969. The reviews lead to the question, "Do you think that all movies should be released in blu-ray format?"

Before you make your mind up, here are some interesting facts to consider. They are taken from VHS Tapes ~~ A Collector's Guide and originally from a story called "Never Forget: The Humble, Indispensable VHS" by Marc Savlov. A large number of movies are simply fading away into history since only about 25 percent of films made before VHS were released on VHS and only about 50 percent of those movies issued on VHS were then made available on DVD. Can you see the trend? If we do NOT transfer movies from one format to the next, they will simply cease to be available to the general public and parts of our cinematic history will be gone forever.
