Paula Atwell: Gallery Owner, Jeweler, and Artist

For the last three years, I have been spending all of my time as a business owner running a unique gallery in Cleveland, Ohio, called Lake Erie Artists Gallery promoting local Cleveland, Ohio artists. I myself am an artist, a jewelry designer, and make jewelry out of fine silver, glass, pearls, and natural stone. This lens is an introduction to what I do, and how I do it. retweet

The Crazy and Artistic Life of Paula Atwell

Or How Paula Atwell is Working to Grow a Cleveland Based Art Business

This lens is about me and the work I am doing both as an art gallery owner, and a jeweler. First, let me tell you about my wonderful gallery, Lake Erie Artists Gallery.

Lake Erie Artists Gallery is a unique gallery in Cleveland, Ohio that focuses on work by local northeast Ohio artists. My goal is to put Cleveland artists and their work on the map both locally and nationally. I am so proud to be from this great city, and so very excited to promote local artists.

I feel so lucky to be doing what I do every day. Even on my absolutely worst day, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work on two of my passions--promoting Cleveland and art.

So how did I get to this place anyway? Well, it took a very long time to finally have the courage to leave my job with guaranteed pay and hours (I had worked for Borders for the last 8 years, and other jobs before that) and to take a leap of faith. My husband, Jack, is essentially supporting us in this growth phase, and I can't thank him enough for his support and encouragement.

I started out with a partner, but over the last couple of years I have become the sole (and soul) owner of Lake Erie Artists Gallery.

Lake Erie Artists Gallery is filled with wonderful art, the work of over 80 artists of all types, including photography, fiber art, paintings, ceramics, jewelry, glass, and much, much more. We also carry books about Cleveland, and by local authors.

We have an online store, and some auxiliary stores on Zazzle.com, and etsy.com.

How many of you have been here to Cleveland? Well, I have lived here since I was just 3 years old and I have to tell you that this city has a lot to offer to anyone. We are a big city and a small town wrapped up together. People here are friendly, and supportive with a true midwestern charm, yet we have a wonderful art museum, orchestra, colleges and universities, and world class health institutions. And that is only the beginning.

My gallery is located inside Tower City which is a mall that was created from the old train station attached to Terminal Tower. It still retains amazing marble floors and pillars, as well as carved and painted ceilings and many of the original brass storefronts. Tower City is located in the heart of Cleveland near Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River right on Public Square.

My job is to create a space that people want to see and return to time and time again as well as raise awareness of our gallery both in person and in any other way possible.

Cleveland is in what I feel is the beginning of a renaissance. There is all kinds of major construction going on downtown especially on one of our main drags, Euclid Avenue, where the city is creating a new bus line that will go directly between Public Square and University Circle. And I am going to make sure that Lake Erie Artists Gallery stays at the forefront of the renaissance.

I have been working feverishly over the last year to raise awareness of our little gallery here. I have networked, meetinged, met, been introduced and introduced in return, and gone from group to group telling people about us and inviting them to our events. I have sent emails, made phone calls, passed out cards and flyers, offered discounts and coupons--all in order to get people to walk into our store. AND I have gathered a cadre of artists that grows and matures and improves as the gallery grows and matures and improves.

We do not just carry work by anyone who says that they are an artist. They have to pass a jury process and prove that they are worthy of being included in our group of interesting, dynamic, and creative individuals. Artists are judged first and foremost on their work, but they also have to be the right kind of person. If they are uncooperative, unpleasant or rude--we don't want them.

We are creating a community of artists, who can use the gallery as their base of operations and trust that their fellow artists will respect them as people.

I spend a lot of my time at shows both in Cleveland, and out of town creating awareness and meeting people--in June 2008 alone I am doing five different outside shows including one in Maryland--and still coming in and manning the gallery 3 to 4 days a week as well as directing all gallery operations, financials, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

Paula Atwell-a true piece of work

Artwork

A work of art, artwork, work or art object is a creation, such as an art object, design, architectural piece, musical work, literary composition, performance, film, conceptual art piece, or even computer program that is made and or valued primarily for an "artistic" rather than practical function. This article is concerned with the concept in the visual arts rather than music or literature, although similar issues arise in those fields.

Traditional media for visual works of art include: calligraphy, photography, Category: wikt - :carving|carvings, gardens, ceramics, painting, prints, sculpture, drawings, photography or buildings. Since modernism, the field of fine art has expanded to include film, performance art, conceptual art, Welded sculpture and video art.

What is perceived as a work of art differs between cultures and eras and by the meaning of the term "art" itself. From the Renaissance until the twentieth century, and to some extent still, Western art critics and the general western public tended not to define applied art or decorative art as works of art, or at least to accord them lower status than works, like paintings, with no practical use, according to the hierarchy of genres. Other cultures, for example Chinese and Islamic art have not made this distinction so strongly.

The related terms artwork and art object, used especially in American English, came into use in the 20th century, especially to describe modern and post-modern art, especially in works without significant skill or craft in creating the physical object. Some contemporary works of art in conceptual art and other fields exist essentially as sets of instructions by the artist for the physical creation of the object, which is expected only to be physically created periodically?just as a piece of music or drama exists as a score or script. An example is Emergency Room by Thierry Geoffroy. Sometimes physical objects are transferred by the artist, but the work requires their arrangement in a specific form set out by the artist. In such cases the distinction between the terms is useful; the "work of art" has no permanent physical form, but sometimes manifests as a physical "art object." Equally a work of found art may not change its physical properties, but becomes art when so presented by the artist. In contrast a work of art may change the qualities of the materials concerned, as in An Oak Tree by Michael Craig-Martin.

The French form of "art object," '''objet dart''''', has been used for much longer in English and usually means a work of decorative or applied art.

To establish whether a work is a work of art, the concepts of attribution, artistic merit and literary merit may be invoked.

Among practitioners of contemporary art, various new media objects such as the DVD, the web page, and other interactive media have been treated as art objects; such treatment frequently involves a formalist (or "medium-specific") analysis. The formal analysis of computerized media has yielded such art movements as internet art and algorithmic art. The purpose of "new media objects" is not to replace traditional media, but to challenge old media.

Paula Atwell Jewelry

Paula Atwell Jeweler

My own main art form is jewelry. I have been creating jewelry for over 12 years, and I just love making new designs, and trying them out on myself and others.

My favorite medium to work with is fine silver, in the form of Precious Metal Clay. I design my pieces in PMC, then have them cast into fine silver.

I have narrowed down my style immensely since I started making jewelry, and now primarily make jewelry with an organic style. Other than the fine silver, I use vintage glass, fused glass, natural stone, and freshwater pearls. All of my findings (earwires, chains, etc. for the uninitiated) are made from sterling. Eventually, I would like to learn to work with gold, but that would take me into an entirely different market.

Viktor Schreckengost

The American Da Vinci

One of the greats to come out of Cleveland was Viktor Schreckengost, who I had the pleasure of meeting in our gallery on the year of his 100th birthday. This is a man that you should learn about. He is one of my inspirations.

Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge Art Print by Viktor Schreckengost

This survey of the work of Viktor Schreckengost - an artistic inventor, an American DaVinci - marks the centenary of his birth. A key figure in the first era of modern design and one of its last living leaders, Schreckengost's paintings, sculpture, pottery, and industrial designs, are now being exhibited at more than 100 museums around the United States. Throughout his long working career, Schreckengost strove to apply a creative philosophy that liinked artistically dramatic form with an object's function. The result was design that was nearly always remarkable and very often revolutionary. He created the first cab-over-engine truck, the first modern mass-produced dinnerware, and the first economical pedal-cars for children. He designed stage sets and costumers, flashlights, printing presses, riding lawn mowers, electric fans, and bicycles. At the same time, his work in the fine arts flourished. He won awards for paintings and ceramic sculpture, placed pieces in museums, and won commissions for new sculptures. Somehow he also found time to establish the Industrial Design Department at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the first program of its kind in the U.S., where he helped teach a new generation of designers. This study of the life and work of Viktor Schreckengost includes more than 250 images of his art and design iwth an extensive text by historian Henry Adams. From the ceramic Jazz Bowl to the high speed, sixteen color printing press designed for R.R. Donnelly, Schreckengost demonstrated style an d innovation that have influenced the shapes of things Americans have used for more than two generations.

This book is a wonderful retrospective on the life of Viktor Schreckengost who was a wonderful Cleveland artist, and just died at the age of 101 in the last year.

Review
Fine artist, sculptor, and ceramicist Viktor Schreckengost has had an enormous impact of popular culture through his Limoges dinnerware designs, his work as a graphic artist, theater and costume designer, as well as his industrial designs which ranged from Murray bicycles, pedal cars, planes and boats, to Steelcraft toy buses and trucks, commercial printing presses, the first riding lawn mower, General Electric lighting fixtures and appliances, the Sear's Beverly Hills lawn chair, and that classic icon of American childhood -- the little red wagon. Profusely illustrated in full color and enhanced with the addition of an Index and Image Catalogue, and with expert commentary by former museum curator Henry Adams, "Viktor Schreckengost: American Da Vinci" is a superbly presented and informative introduction to the life, work, and artistry of a remarkably talent who dedicated himself to the esthetic improvement of American popular culture. Highly recommended for personal, professional, and academic library American Art History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Paula Atwell--Painter

Watercolorist

My newest artistic endevour is that of watercolor. I am really just beginning to learn how to paint with watercolor paints.

I was fascinated by the effects of watercolor, and decided to learn how to paint. Little did I know that watercolor painting is considered the most difficult kind of painting, harder than both acrylics and oils.

I jumped right into the lessons, and have produced about seven paintings that I am proud of. I have even sold one original. Pretty exciting! The Sunflower in this lens is a painting I created in honor of my sister, who loves sunflowers.

Promoting Earth Friendly Art

I am a lover of the green movement, keeping the earth in good shape for our children.

Since I have two children of my own, I would like them to have a wonderful quality of life.

Therefore, anything I can do in my business to promote green art and other green businesses is high on my priority list. Several of the artists in the gallery make art out of recycled materials.

I also have other lenses on green weddings, green wedding gifts, green showers, and green art.

The Green Book: The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time

I am a big supporter of the green movement. You will find a lot of recycled items in my store.

Environmental matters get the star treatment in The Green Book. Rogers and Kostigen address the fact that Americans endanger the balance of the ecosystem by the amount of waste we produce, the amount of water we use, and the amount of energy we consume, and celebrities, including Robert Redford, Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Aniston, Faith Hill, and Dale Earnhardt Jr., contribute observations and suggestions for living green. In the hope that the glamour of the A-list will make discussion of environmental challenges more palpable, Rogers and Kostigen establish 12 aspects of our habitat, such as home, work, and school, and suggest better lifestyle choices in each arena. Small adjustments in the way we consume and dispose of resources add up to significant and positive environmental effects. Illustrating the results of green actions with descriptive rather than numerical analyses, Rogers and Kostigen write, for example, that if everyone in the U.S. used one less paper napkin per day, in a year's time we would have saved one billion pounds of landfill waste. An outstanding resource, The Green Book offers hope and practical suggestions.
