The Music of Paul Winter
Ranked #6,169 in Music, #170,187 overall | Donates to Nuci's Space - A musicians' resource & support center
Paul Winter holds Annual Winter Solstice and Summer SOLSTICE CELEBRATIONS which are world music festivals celebrating the return of the sun after the longest night of the year in December, and the dawning of the longest day in June. These solstice celebrations are held in New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
Paul's musical realm embraces many traditions and world cultures. His music interweaves widely diverse instruments and elements with the extraordinary voices from what he refers to as "the greater symphony of the Earth", including wolves, whales, eagles, and several dozen other species of 'wilderness musicians'.
Any of his wonderful albums would make a thoughtful sweet gift.

Flyways Adventure
After 7 years of field research and recording in 16 countries, the Great Rift Valley Orchestra will finally premiere the music of their Flyways adventure, March 16 and 17, at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. The music will be performed by the new international ensemble featuring musicians from several of these countries. Paul will receive the John James Audubon Center Award for Art Inspiring Conservation.
In 1991 in Tela Viv Paul Winter met Yossi Leshem and over the years they have collaborated. Yossi was concerned abut the storks, steppe eagles, pelicans, and other species that fly over Israel. Yossi became renowned in Israel for finding ways to stop the collision of air-force jets with migrating birds. He convinced the air force to fund a radar station at Ben Gurion airport, which he staffed with volunteers from the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. From his studies he had good information on the 350 migrating species and the approximate times of their arrival, so with his guidance the volunteers were able to monitor their passages with the radar and then beam the air force to keep their jets out of particular areas and altitudes during those times. This plan succeeded in cutting plane/bird crashes by 74%.
At any rate that was the impetus for planning and executing the Flyways music project which recorded music of some of the 53 tribes in that area, and then going on to Kenya. The motto of the Flyways project is: "migrating birds know no borders." Beneath this overarching aerial highway live millions of people of diverse races and cultures. The flyway embraces all of these cultures, and the project aims to harness the timeless languages of birds and music with the goal of bringing people together in common cause across borders and cultures.
Tickets for these concerts are on sale now. Besides the concert that will be a fund raising reception.
Friends of Flyways Reception
On Saturday evening, March 17, prior to the Saturday evening performance of Flyways, there will be a "Friends of Flyways" reception at 6 pm at Cathedral House, adjacent to the Cathedral. It will feature hors d'ouervres, music by some of the international flyways musicians, and commentaries by collaborators in the project. For sponsorship tickets and admittance to the reception, please call Music for the Earth at 860-567-8797 for further information.

Paul Winter's Music
Cutting his teeth in jazz, and combining his seemingly endless talent and imagination with his love of the earth and its inhabitants -- human and animal alike -- Winter has, over the years, consistently produced melodic, interesting albums that are challenging and comfortable at the same time. Always surrounding himself with stellar musicians -- a cast that has changed over the years, always first-rate -- he has continuously managed to transform his vision and emotion into some of the finest music of our age.
The ultimate tool that has allowed him to maintain his integrity is, I believe, his honesty. There is absolutely no element of pretense in his art -- he feels strongly and deeply about what he's doing, and it's present in every note. He combines various styles of ethnic music from around the world -- African, Brazilian, Native American and more -- with elements of jazz and classical music and sounds from nature (the wolf, the eagle, the whale) into a mix that comes together in such a way as to be seamless. It's as if they were made to fit together -- an audio metaphor for how we should live with each other and with the planet.
There is a comfort and serenity to this music -- and there is joy and rhythm and life. It's almost like a celebratory prayer -- a prayer of thanks for what we've been given in the form of the natural world and its peoples, and a prayer of hope that we don't throw it all away. It's a breathtakingly beautiful, stunning document."

Canyon Lullaby
Reviewed on Amazon: "Having been to the Grand Canyon on numerous occasions, and having spent a weekend with the Paul Winter Consort, I can heartily recommend this album, now available only in MP3 download, or in the rare CD bin some place. Winter goes to great lengths to create his authentic and unique music, a music of place and timelessness. One can immerse oneself in this music, be in another place, and commune with nature and place. Each year NPR hosts the Winter Consort and guests at St John the Divine in New York City for the Winter Solstice concert. Music played in that sacred space is similiar in acoustics to Grand Canyon. Winter has made the often cantankerous soprano sax an instrument of incredible beauty and personal expression. Revel in this music and be thankful this man and his band never gave into chart busting and profit making. Music making on the higest level is what Winter has always been about. He has enriched my life manyfold."

Paul Winter remembers:
"My first visit to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine was in the spring of 1974, for the funeral of Duke Ellington. The experience of hearing the extraordinary music of this service in the awesome space of the Cathedral was profoundly moving. A succession of renowned jazz soloists, all alumni of the Ellington Orchestra, played and sang great Ellington songs to a congregation of 10,000. This music felt entirely appropriate in the Cathedral. These songs were hymns of our lives.
"As we were leaving, recordings of Ellington came through the sound system, and I can still hear the velvet, liquid tone of Johnny Hodges' sax soaring way up in the vault of the Cathedral. I had then no clue that several years later I myself would have the opportunity to play in the Cathedral; and the last thing I would have dreamed is that I would be making music for liturgy."
Ipanema/Rio
I have always loved Paul Winter. This disc is a beautiful example of his work. This is not like the old elevator music. It is music that brings back memories and puts you in a great mood.
