Portals and Pavements

Heather Blakey's obsession with portals has been infectious at Soul Food. Folk have drawn portals in all sorts of places in order to slip into the fantastic world of Lemuria and join the Enchanteur on one of her journey's.

Not everyone uses the Manhole Covers, cunningly placed in pavements, to travel to new worlds. But there have been many who have found themselves looking to find these fascinating entry points

This lens encourages you to discover the fascinating portals that lie within our pavements. Perhaps more importantly, it encourages you to enter the world of le Enchanteur

Manhole Covers

Manhole covers were designed to provide access to underground utilities such as power, sewerage, gas, telephone etc. Beneath them lies a surface tunnel, with labyrinthine corridors connected. Personally I have never been in the massive tunnels that thread their way beneath the streets of Melbourne so when I sought some out I realized that I am only dimly aware of the myriad of functions they perform.

As a writer I am fascinated by the concept of egress - the capacity to exit, to go out, to enter the subterranean world below. Years of teaching the craft of writing has demonstrated that when writers' are willing to make the journey within their writing and creativity accelerates.

Take this opportunity to enter the world of Lemuria and le Enchanteur.

Make a manhole, open it, clamber on down and see where you arrive in this fabulous world. Perhaps your portal will bring you to the Lemurian Abbey or Rainbow Beach.

Drainspotting
Drainspotting is all about paying attention to your surroundings. Manhole covers, drains, grates, trench covers--someone had to design all of these. Functional and ornamental, there's a lot of interesting stuff happening down by your feet. Check it out.

Manhole Covers in London
Manhole covers are among the urban landscape's most lasting features. They are made of extremely durable materials since their placement exposes them to wear. They have also endured because unlike gas street lamps, manhole covers remain useful and, more than 100 years after their installation, continue to fulfil their function perfectly.

Louise Levergneaux
In the fall of 1999 Louise Levergneux looked down one day at a manhole cover while on holiday with her husband, Michael. "I noticed how different the manhole covers where from the ones back home while waiting at a Café for Michael. I had never noticed before the different kinds of manholes that existed and their reason for being." Louise continued during her trip in Scotland to look down on the streets instead of the fabulous castles and monuments and started to have a good size collection without noticing.

Design a Manhole Cover

and then use it to enter a new realm

Take the time to design a manhole cover using mixed media or collage. Put this piece of work on the cover of a journal and then record your journey beyond making sure to introduce guides, heroes, heroines and villains.

Response to Pavements and Portals
Once upon a time there was a talking lemur lady named Laurel who liked to look at manhole covers about the countryside of Lemuria. She spoke of a "secret, subterranean world", one filled with awe and wonder and intriguing stories and maybe buried treasure, and anyway, there was always a nice assortment of very good Lemurian lady traveling companions who were generally up for a journey, especially if there were to be tasty munchable treats along the way%u2026.
