The company was founded by the riverboat captain called Joshua Ward over a hundred years ago, making them much older and more experienced than most of their competitors. The name gets its roots from a small town in Georgetown County, on the South Carolina coast, where the design was invented and perfected. Legend has it that the captain was in need of a decent night's sleep, but the traditional grass filled mattresses were far too hot for that climate. Rope based hammocks offer a much more ventilation which helps to keep you cool, but it took a lot of trial and error to perfect a design that was comfortable enough to sleep on.

The key to success was the invention of wooden spreader bars that did not use knots. It is incredible to think that this design is still being used all over the world today, almost unchanged. Pawley's Island now sell their original rope hammock in two flavors, natural cotton or soft spun polyester. Many people prefer the natural feel of cotton, but polyester does have the advantage of being more durable. This is not all they sell!
