Reputation Management and SEO
One of the worst situations to find your web site in is as the subject of negative comments and bad reviews with no structure in place to repair the damage. One of the drawbacks of the web is bad press can appear out of nowhere and very often, will rank highly on the SERPs, sometimes even directly above or below the home page of the site in question. With a battle between good and bad fought in such close quarters, it can be difficult to convince web browsers to take the time to visit the site and form their own opinion.

Top Position's Top SEO Do's and Don'ts!
When it comes to search engine optimisation, you really have to be careful what tips and advice you follow and which techniques you employ to make the most out of your campaign. Here, UK SEO agency Top Position notes its' Top Five Do's and Top Five Don'ts, to help you gain as much as you can from the world of search engine marketing.
Do...:
...pick relevant keywords and make sure that these are consistent with the products and services you offer.
Don't...:
...choose thousands of keywords, in the hope that somebody one day may type that into a search engine to find your website. Instead, focus on ten keywords and work on these for a specific amount of time e.g. six months. Don't forget to monitor the progress of these keywords.
Do...:
...ensure engaging, exciting material is produced. It is all well and good to attract traffic but interesting news items or articles on your website is likely to further encourage users to re-visit and perhaps even interact with your website.
Don't...:
...post random, meaningless material onto your website, ESPECIALLY if it is not optimised.
Do...:
...ensure that the material being produced for social media distribution is being uploaded to your website. This enables further link-building and also shows search engine 'spiders' and 'robots' that your site is growing and not simply employing manipulative link-building techniques.
Don't...:
...upload significant amount of material one week and expect it to boost your rankings or build extra links for months to come. You would be better off producing and uploading smaller amounts of optimised material once a week, which again shows Google and the other search engines that your site is ever-expanding with informative and engaging material.
Do...:
...continually liaise with your SEO campaign Account Manager to ensure you are getting the most out of your money.
Don't...:
...be surprised if you receive material you do not like if you have not been in frequent contact with your Account Manager. The production of material takes a great deal of time, research and effort and therefore a breakdown of communication is likely to impact on the management of these resources, subsequently impacting upon your SEO campaign.
Making Your Website Work For You: Part Four - URL Semantics.
Here, let's look at the foundations upon which your site is built - the URL. Now, you probably spent a considerable amount of time agonising over the exact URL for you site, and for many securing the perfect URL is an expensive process, but once you've got it all is good. The importance however comes when deciding upon the various different URLs that will be assigned to the different pages of your site. A URL with no relation to the page it represents offers absolutely nothing to the user's experience, a site's SEO or the webmasters job when conducting site maintenance.
Let's look at some examples:
http://www.travel-example.com/?continent=3&country=15&city=54
http://www.travel-example.com/europe/sweden/stockholm
The first point here relates to the user's experience, which of course is of the upmost importance for any business. When visiting this page a user will gain absolutely no information from the first URL. This URL offers that the page is probably related to a city somewhere in the world, but little else. The second URL however is descriptive and logical, and shows that the webmaster is considerate to their users' needs.
While the users' experience is of course important, most website users don't search for a web page using URLs, it is much more common for them to type a keyword into a search engine and browse the results. This is where our SEO comes in, and a logical and semantic URL structure is very important for an SEO campaign. A URL that relates to the page's content, is logically structured, and reasonably simple, makes it far easier for search engine spiders to index that page in conjunction with its content, to verify what it's really about, and just how important it is in the web site's context. This is likely to result in better web rankings. The next point in relation to SEO involves these keywords - i.e. the main words which potential customers will input to a search engine when looking for your site's products or services. A good SEO friendly URL should include your keywords wherever possible, and just as the main page headings on your site will include these keywords, for example "Holidays in Sweden", the URLs relating to these pages should as well. This all relates to your overall approach to SEO and it is important to think about your site as a whole when embarking on such a process.
When setting up a website you'll want to do all you can to increase the visibility of it on the web, and this can involve a range of processes, such as banner ads and pay per click for example, but the most natural and long lasting method is search engine optimisation. SEO is important for your website, but what's important for SEO is consideration. When setting up your site it's a good idea to consider SEO at every turn, and while many sites only do this once their site is fully constructed URLs represent a good illustration of why SEO should always be at the back of your mind.
Making Your Website Work For You: Part Three - Sitemaps Explained.
Top Position's website offers a wealth of information on optimising your site and making it work for you, but here we are going to address an underappreciated resource, one that all website owners can access easily, and one which will help your SEO - the sitemap.
A sitemap is exactly what the name suggests - a list of the pages on a website accessible to users or spiders (spiders, or 'robots', are the software programmes the search engines use to scan your site and make an assessment of where is should place in web rankings). This document shows the various pages on your site in relation to each other and where they feature in the grand scheme of your site; this basically makes the sitemap a general top-down view of the overall site contents. This overview of the sites contents will also indicate which pages link to each other, and you can think of this as a sort of table of contents which shows visitors to your site what they can expect to find. For a good illustration of a straightforward yet comprehensive sitemap, take a look at the Top Position website: http://www.topposition.co.uk/sitemap.html.
The first thing to say on why you should have a sitemap relates to the exact reason you have tried so hard to present an attractive, informative and accessible site in the first place - to enhance the user's experience. This is the pivotal point of any customer orientated service and the point to which any website owner should direct their main efforts. As your website grows, you must update your sitemap. This will enable visitors to know what content is being added to you site, encouraging them to return. If this isn't reason enough to create a sitemap, read on.
Sitemaps also help you achieve a better organic ranking by making sure that all of the pages on your site can be found. If you have inaccessible pages your site will appear restrictive to the search engine spiders and they will not award you as high a ranking as you perhaps deserve.Further to this a sitemap helps with the internal architecture of a site, and this in turn can positively affect SEO.
By expanding the capacity of internal linking a sitemap boosts your search engine optimisation efforts without any labour intensive directory work or external link building activities. After all, if your site isn't going to help itself in the SEO stakes then it isn't working hard enough. So, now we've decided that you definitely do want to include a sitemap on your website let's look at how you might go about doing this. The simple answer is, as with much of this technical web stuff - ask Google. Google have a whole Webmasters resource which offers all you need, in simple steps, to create a fully working sitemap, but just in case you encounter any problems the correct file format for a sitemap is .XML.
Ultimately sitemaps will enhance the user's experience and enable search engines to make a full and fair assessment of your site, and this will in turn help your SEO. It's one of these things that may not seem immediately important when setting up a site, as usually sitemaps are included as a very small link at the bottom of a homepage, but for your site to develop and become a leading force in your field it is absolutely essential.
Making Your Website Work For You: Part Two - What is a Robots .TXT File and Why Is It Important?
Web site owners use the Robots.TXT file to give instructions about their site to web robots with a view to presenting the most suitable information to encourage the robots to boost the site up the rankings. It might be an idea for us to first explore what a web robot is. Web robots, or spiders as you may hear them referred to as, are software programs used to index websites. Search engines use these robots to assess your website by navigating around it, following links and looking for new pages. Basically this process is conducted with the ultimate goal of making a judgement on where to rank your site. This is as much as you need to know to appreciate the importance of these robots for your SEO , and the importance of presenting them with the best possible view of your site.
Now, as we have discussed a Robots.TXT file is used to give the robots instructions about your site, but what sorts of things should this include and why do we need to action it? Well, this file is placed on your server to tell the various search engine robots not to index certain sections or pages of your site, and surprisingly such exclusion is beneficial to your SEO , and your site as a whole. If for example your site includes product pages for a range of shoes, it is likely that some of the product pages will be the same, i.e. if one particular make of shoe comes in a variety of colours. As the product pages for each different colour of this shoe will be the same your site is in danger of being penalised, in terms of SEO and web rankings , for including duplicate pages. The search engines disapprove of duplicate pages so your Robots.TXT file can instruct the robots to disregard these pages. This may also come in handy when your site is undergoing construction as you can instruct the robots not to index pages that are half finished, or in the middle of a rework, which could also hinder your site's progress.
All search engines, or at least all the important ones, now look for a Robots.TXT file as soon their robots arrive on your site, and so the very fact that search engines are looking for them is reason enough to put one on your site. If you look at your site statistics you are sure to see many entries in the 'files not found' section where search engine robots looked for, and failed to find, a Robots.TXT file on your site.
Creating a basic Robots.TXT file is not difficult and can be done using notepad. It needs to be saved to the root directory of your site, that is the directory where your home page or index page is. Each entry has just two lines and they should run thus:
User-Agent: [Spider or Robot Name]
Disallow: [Directory or File Name]
This line can be repeated for each directory or file you want to exclude, or for each robot you want to exclude.
There are many other reasons you may want to instruct certain robots to ignore certain parts of your site and these relate to the varying nature of search engines and their views on search engine optimisation as an activity. The different search engines work in different ways, perform different functions, and offer differing values to different SEO activities. You may for example want to exclude some robots from indexing your site altogether, for example from those search engines you don't want to appear in, or those whose main aim is collecting email addresses.
The reason you are exploring different methods of SEO is because you want your site to be visible on the search engines, but within this you have to accept that the engines are going to want reasons as to why they should give you higher rankings. The Robots.TXT file system allows sites to present what they want to the search engine assessment software and so it is of the upmost importance that you consider fully the implications of allowing robots to index each page of your site.
Making Your Website Work For You: Part One - Optimising Images
Within search engine optimisation, or SEO, there are many different important activities which can contribute to your web rankings. Firstly we need to discuss your website itself, as after all if your own site isn't set up to help itself then why should the search engines grant you higher rankings?
Ultimately your website is your resource, and while developing it to serve your customers' needs is of course a primary concern there is no reason you can't make it work for you as well. SEO should start at the very foundations of your online business and inroads in to achieving better web rankings can be made as soon as you create your site.
While there are certain things you can do to optimise your site you will probably need a properly managed SEO campaign to push your site further up the rankings and maintain top positions. A professional SEO campaign involves a wide range of activities, from social media marketing, article distribution and media liaison to bookmarking and link building activities.
First let's look at some of the most under used, and perhaps misunderstood, ways in which you can develop your site and better prepare yourself for SEO.
Images are of course an important part of any site. They offer colour to a page, illustrate products and help to engage the user by breaking up text. The problem with images on a website is that on the whole they are underutilized, as images can offer much more to your site than simple aesthetics and can contribute to SEO.
No matter how large or small your site, you'll have at least one or two images on show to your visitors. However, there is a lot more to including a photo on your site than simply uploading with a relevant caption. As a file based addition an image will have a file name, and (hopefully) ALT text.
ALT text is in essence text added to any image to enable the screen readers to understand them, and in Internet Explorer we can see this ALT text by mousing over the image and looking at the yellow tooltip that appears. While it's not rocket science there is a skill to writing ALT text for images, and it's not just a matter of putting a description in there.
Firstly it's important to note that file names and ALT tags should be straightforward; ALT tags in particular should describe the image as succinctly as possible, so visitors unable to see the image still get an idea of what should fill that space. In the case of an image being used as a link through to another page within the site, the filename will perform much the same function as anchor text, making keyword inclusion and relevant information essential.
Remember, ALT text should describe the content of the image and nothing more; the trick however is coupling this simplicity with keyword inclusion. While ALT text is probably the most significant factor for SEO when it comes to images there are a couple of other points which will help you ensure your images are fully optimised.
Firstly you should consider the surrounding image text, as Google will weigh the text that surrounds each image in determining what the picture is about. Within this you will want to ensure that you place relevant keywords above and below the image you are looking to optimise.
Second it is important to consider the file name under which your image is uploaded. For example if you were trying to optimise the word "funky t-shirt", you might name the image funky-t-shirt.jpg. Because it can be difficult to optimise in this way if you are forced to go back and change the name of existing images it is a good idea to keep keywords in mind when you are naming them in the first place.
The importance of images on a website is absolute, and we all know what happens when we visit a site of pure, unrelenting text... we leave. The basic principle here, and the main thing to take away from this advice is that images should work for you, and while they look pretty you should always be expecting them to perform a multitude of functions. So before unloading images or adding descriptions, stop, and think SEO.
Top Position Dispels SEO Myths
Here Rebecca responds to some of the industry's most common misconceptions regarding SEO.
Q1. I am currently using an SEO agency and they are using a wide selection of blogging, bookmarking and press distribution sites to gain vital link backs. They seem to be doing a good job but I think they should be using sites with a high page rank- am I right in saying this?
A. It is true that when you link to good quality site with a high page rank that some of that goodwill will rub off, however website owners are becoming increasingly hung up about the concept of page rank. The highest page ranks of a domain are usually from the homepage and the pages off this are usually of a lower rank. Despite this change in rank, the domain on the whole will still be a respected site, with a lot of traffic flowing through it. This usually applies to blogging sites such as Blogger, Squidoo and BlogSpot. What I always tell our clients is that having a good page rank does not influence your position in the search engine rankings, there are many sites out there with a high page rank that are certainly not on the first page of Google.
Q2. I am confused about the importance of Meta keywords, what are they and how can I change them?
A. Meta keywords are keywords, which highlight web pages content. These keywords are hidden in the HTML and are optional features of a website. To identify what yours are, simply go to the search engine toolbar and go to 'view' then 'source'. You will be presented with a page of HTML coding. Your keywords will look something like this, I advise our clients that only the lesser search engines will still pay attention to Meta keywords, as spammers have reduced their importance over the last few years, but to make sure that their Meta keywords include an up to date list of keywords that they wish to be associated with.
Q3. My current SEO agency only offers on site optimisation and link building strategies. I have recently read that I should be creating unique content for the site- do you have any advice?
A. Yes, you should be working towards creating unique optimised content on a weekly basis. This content should be anything from new web pages to unique articles, which can then be sent to press to gain more link backs, as well as contributing towards the growth of the site. Each item produced should be a minimum length of 250 words, be keyword rich and be linked to relevant pages on your website. At Top Position , we offer this service as standard, this unique content is then sent out as PRs and then added to the site to fulfil the on page optimization side of our SEO service.
Q4. My SEO agency keep mentioning Robots TXT files and I still do not understand what this is- help!
A. A Robots TXT file is a piece of HTML coding that tells search engine spiders to look at a particular page of a site. It also acts as an invitation to your site. Along with Robots TXT files are no follow links, which are almost the reverse. These tell the search engine spiders not visit a certain page of your site. The benefit of this is that if you have duplicate content on a two pages, you will not be penalised for this.
Q5.If I am auditing site content what things should I bear in mind?
A. You should make sure that any content is optimised with deep linking, that it is keyword rich and that it is engaging. SEO is all about considering the human user and making sure that you create unique well-written content.
How You Can Make SEO Work For Your Brand and Your Business
Branding is an essential component of key advertising and marketing strategies. Your brand differentiates you from your competition. It provides a sense of trust and a sense of establishment. So how important is your brand when it comes to your search engine optimisation campaign?
Well, take Google, arguably the most popular search engine around today. Globally used, globally trusted. Chances are, then, that when your brand is at the top of a Google search, there is almost a form of inherent trust in your brand - even if the consumer has not heard of your organisation, business or brand before.
Search engine optimisation, therefore, can have a very positive impact on brand awareness - one way in which this can be achieved is by using relevant keywords effectively. When deciding these key words, make sure that you consider your brand, slogans and any key phrases as part of your overall advertising campaign to be a part of your SEO campaign. Choosing keywords that are targeted to a specific audience will certainly increase traffic potential to your website, in addition to attracting customers who perhaps have not considered your brand before but are receptive to the products, goods or services you have to offer.
It is, however, absolutely essential that these keywords are relevant. Implementing clear, strategic keyword research is significantly important and it is vital the client is involved in this process, identifying key areas, words and phrases appropriate to the campaign for the SEO agency to research. Not being proactive in this particular area could result in page content and title tags irrelevant in terms of your overall advertising and marketing campaign. There are also free tools on the Internet, including one provided by Google, which can provide keyword suggestions around those you have in mind, in addition to telling you how competitive these might be.
Rebecca Appleton, Marketing Director at leading UK search engine optimisation agency Top Position, said, "It is really important when considering SEO in promoting your brand that relevant keywords are chosen carefully, competitor research is carried out ethically and that the right digital marketing techniques are in place to really make the most out of your SEO campaign. Here at Top Position, we strive to ensure our clients receive the best service and we are continually researching new SEO methods and social media outlets to maximise the SEO potential for our clients."

The Tick-Tock Of The SEO Clock: It Takes Time.
It could be argued that when it comes to SEO, there is often an expectation that results will appear immediately. Of course, any well-versed search engine optimisation specialist would know that this digital marketing strategy is effective, as long as time and effort is invested in such a campaign.
The first few months of your SEO campaign is arguably the most important. The majority of this time should be spent analysing and redeveloping your website, optimising it, adding a site map - all the architectural elements that really are the foundation for a successful campaign.
So wouldn't simply optimising your website work? Well, search engines need to be shown that your website is growing and not simply cheating its way to the top. Producing new, enticing and engaging optimised content encourages search engine 'spiders' (also referred to as 'robots') to return to your site more often and index your site faster. These 'spiders' need time to re-crawl your site, which could take from a few days to potentially even a few months.
One piece of content per week over a period of twenty weeks is arguably more effective than, say, ten pieces of content per week for a fortnight. The other advantage here is that backlinks are being built regularly week-on-week, even if this may only be two or three backlinks per week. This is likely to have a very positive impact on your website ranking, providing a better organic ranking, across search engines.
Patience is required with SEO. Why? Well, it seems search engines learned a long time ago that 'manipulative link-building' tended to be conducted in short period of times. Your website needs to gain trust among the various search engines and in order to really get noticed, to really gain a better organic ranking, the work carried out as a part of your SEO campaign needs to be performed regularly but for a long period of time. You really are more likely to see progress over a twelve-month period to a three-month or six-month period.
Here at Top Position, we understand that our clients may have spent a significant amount of money redeveloping a site to make it SEO-friendly - and obviously, they want to see a return on their investment as soon as possible. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix when it comes to SEO. However, the digital marketing strategies we employ and the continuous research our SEO Account Managers carry out ensure that we provide service of the highest quality to our clients.
Facebook, MySpace and Twitter: Not Just Social Networking Sites!
It is no surprise that the explosion of the Internet has led to many different opportunities and subsequently the further development of computer technology to accommodate the ever-changing demands of the World Wide Web. The business, advertising and marketing industries have also all benefited with the effects of the 'Net Boom', with an increase in organisations using social networking websites to promote their brands, their products and their services.
Many argue that Classmates.com, founded in 1995, was the first popular social networking website and in some ways laid the foundations for future predecessors, such as MySpace and Facebook, both of which have realised the way to adapt their service to attract revenue - by offering online advertising.
From the birth of the PC almost twenty years ago to the millions of users now joining social networking websites year-on-year, it is hardly surprising that SEO agencies across the world have recognised the importance of utilising these websites in campaigns for clients keen to increase traffic, build further links and be recognised by search engine 'spiders' or 'robots'.
In fact, it seems even the sites in question are aware of the importance of SEO. Late last year, Facebook launched its 'Public Listings', in a bid to increase page rankings and traffic that Google and other search engines could give to Facebook pages. So, why is that good news? Well, according to Expatica.com, the social networking website appears to be the preferred option in Europe - a third of the British population is now a Facebook user. In utilising Facebook as an SEO resource, you would have the potential to target approximately 22 million people in the UK alone.
What about Twitter, you ask? This social phenomenon does not work in the same way as Facebook and MySpace - 'nofollow' tags are placed on links, which means Google, Yahoo and other search engines ignore these backlinks (although Ask.com does appear to register these). However, from an SEO and digital marketing perspective, Twitter can have a really powerful effect on your SEO campaign. The key to making it work? Sending out your messages and your links to those interest in your field and nice, as well as, of course, targeting relevant press and media contacts - traffic to your site and users accessing your site is obviously another overall goal of your search engine optimisation campaign.
At Top Position, our SEO Social Media Managers are continually researching different social networking sites, blogs, bookmarking and press release distribution channels to ensure links are being built for your organisation over a variety of different social media outlets. This is all a key part of our digital marketing campaign for our clients. A recent development made here at Top Position is the use of Flickr to promote the products stocked by our clients, from personalised gifts to lighting sources. Many SEO experts have noted the effectiveness of Flickr as an SEO resource.
Our SEO Account Managers also strive to ensure the creative and compelling material being produced for our clients reaches as many news agencies, newspapers, television and radio stations as possible. While of course this is not search engine optimisation in the sense of building links, it certainly directs traffic to these websites and after all, that is a key focus of the SEO campaign we offer our clients.

Top Five SEO-Friendly Social Media Sites
An integral part of search engine optimisation is to make sure that your site has a variety of links to it and that the network which stems from your site is constantly expanding. Search engines like to see the addition of links, especially when they come from sites with heavy traffic and a good reputation.
Social media websites have become part of everyday routine for the 250 million people across the world are members of at least one social media circle. This phenomenal surge can be utilised to help boost the ranking of your site your site's rankings, as well as creating familiarity for your brand identity.
Top Position's SEO team look at the best sites to use when link-building:
1. Wordpress - As one of the most refined blog sites on the internet, Wordpress allows its users to customise their blogs freely, so that you can really claim the blog to be your own. Allowing a simple content upload or a more complex customisation option, the site's versatility allows the user to create deeplinks within content, embed various multimedia and tag entries.
2. Yahoo Bookmarks - Used by 20 million people worldwide and available in 12 different languages, Yahoo Bookmarks employs a very easy to use interface, and a tagging system that makes it easy for users to find your links. The current version of Bookmarks integrates aspects of the now defunct Yahoo Mywebs.
3. LiveJournal - Initially a site that was popular with a teenage demographic, LiveJournal has steadily risen to become much more than a blogging site. The thousands of groups created on LiveJournal have a real sense of community, and this makes it a prime platform for the marketing of your website. Informative and straight forward content with a personal touch does well to attract the attention of the users.
4. Delicious - A simple bookmarking site that is much more powerful than it looks. Gathering an average of 1 million visits a month from the US alone, the audience for your links is potentially huge. Tagging your bookmarks accurately and giving the link a succinct and relevant description should attract some attention, and will hopefully provide traffic to your site.
5. Reddit - A site that has a demographic that consists largely of young males, this site encourages interactivity between users, and employs a bookmark rating system. An engaging link that creates discussion will do well on this pared-down site.
Of course, this is a very small selection of the social media that is available to you on the worldwide web, but collective use of these sites will provide a wealth of quality links to your site and will help to bring relevant traffic to your site. Alongside this progressive form of SEO, Top Position provides expertise in pay per click (PPC) as well as an offline public relations. Content created by our trained journalists is sent to mainstream press outlets and distributed through various press release channels, giving you a well rounded SEO service.
35 Great Reasons To Consider A PPC Campaign!
Search Marketing Agency Top Position Signs Deal To Be Exclusive Advertising Supplier For New UK Search Engine
Search engine marketing agency Top Position has announced an exclusive advertising deal with a new search engine, slated to launch in the UK later this year. The Wimbledon and Nottingham based firm has been working on the agreement for the last six months.Daniel Jupp, managing director of Top Position said, "We are extremely excited at the prospect of working closely with a new search engine and delighted to be the exclusive supplier of online advertising to the site. Plans are already at an advanced stage with the advertising model decided. I understand the search engine has several initiatives in the pipeline which I am sure will lead to it becoming one to watch over the next 12 months."
Although its name has not yet been disclosed, the new search engine will be UK based and offers users cash incentives to use its services. Advertisers will also reap richer rewards for their participation than the traditional PPC formats offered by Google, Yahoo! and MSN. It has designed a cost per acquisition costing in order to keep costs low for businesses opting to advertiser their site alongside the search results.
Mr Jupp added, "Rather than expending a daily or monthly budget, firms wishing to secure their place alongside relevant results will be able to block out their preferred position for a single yearly fee. This means advertisers will not be subject to the rising costs associated with traditional pay per click ads as keyword competition increases."
Top Position has worked with pay per click advertisers since 2001. It has conducted client-side research as part of its advertising development deal with the new search engine. Alongside the single fixed fee for preferred positions, it will also offer a cost per acquisition sliding scale of cost, based on feedback from long-time pay per click advertisers.
Offering text and multimedia search results, the new search engine is expected to go live for UK advertisers in the later half of this year. It is currently under development in London. Top Position's work with the search engine will not impact on its existing pay per click or search engine optimisation activities. The firm has indicated that a new department will be set up to focus specifically on its own brand advertising deal.

PPC and SEO Agency Top Position To Rebrand
The change is being spearheaded by managing director Daniel Jupp and operations director, Rebecca Appleton. Mr Jupp said, "I'm incredibly excited by the fact that we are starting a whole new chapter and look forward to continuing to drive forward the company as we develop an even more diverse and powerful brand. I'm confident the new brand will help us move forward as a full service agency across all of our geographical locations and expand into new territories."
Top Position's rebrand comes on the back of an action packed two years. Having added a dedicated Yahoo department to its team of AdWords account managers at the beginning of 2007, the firm also restructured its Google department to offer dedicated small business services, its own brand credit accounts and platinum account management consultancy serving its high-profile account wins.
The agency has also developed a successful SEO arm, providing organic optimisation via social media and digital marketing activities.
"Having concentrated on creating a UK presence in the last few months, we feel that we have all of the tools in place to take the next step and reshape our image as an SEO and PPC agency of note, not just here in the UK but across Europe and the US," said Rebecca Appleton. "The last twelve months have seen us cement our position as a 'go to' agency for brand name firms looking to retain digital expertise across their online marketing spend. Having won big accounts including Shell UK, Ocean Finance and Majestic Wine, now is the perfect time to consolidate our achievements with a new identity typing up these achievements with a single, coherent brand."
The rebrand will commence in January, although all details are currently being kept under wraps.

Pay Per Click Firm Defies Credit Crunch, Opens 2nd New Office Of The Month In London
Managing director Daniel Jupp is overseeing the London move. He said, "To open a second new UK presence in four weeks would be a major milestone for any company, let alone one that has relocated staff and services from overseas to do so. Top Position is very excited to once again enjoy a central London presence and, along with our office in Nottingham, looks forward to forging even closer relationships with our client base, many of whom are located in or near the capital.
"London is without doubt a driving force for web development and search engine marketing and while it's not essential to have an office in London to be a part of that, it is wonderful to be close to the heart of the digital industry and be even better positioned to contribute new ideas, processes and services to a sector that is developing so rapidly".
Top Position's Wimbledon office will house the agency's pay per click management activities, complimenting existing PPC optimisation work carried out at the company's European headquarters in Spain. Offering a results-driven management package across Google, Yahoo and MSN, Top Position's paid search term boasts an enviable client list. Its team of experienced account managers has created and managed campaigns for brand name clients include Shell, Ocean Finance and Majestic Wine. As a Google-certified agency, Top Position manages millions of pounds worth of advertising spend each year.
Passionate about search, the company's 'more clicks for less' ethos has driven expansion into a number of global territories. Along with pay per click management, Top Position also offers a unique search engine optimisation service. Top Position Beats Credit Crunch With Record Client Wins
Trading across a number of verticals, the pay per click advertising and search engine optimisation business was won by a young sales team, operating from the company's European head quarters.
Sales director, Sam Hasler said, "There are a number of factors contributing to the growth of our client base at Top Position. One is a highly knowledgeable and passionate sales team who go the extra mile for prospective clients, taking their time on every call, and ensuring we have all the information necessary to tailor a service according to their needs.
"We also consistently exceed client expectations, offering free trials that reflect the confidence we have in our management service. I believe in providing a service that is second to none and this is reflected across every department at Top Position. It is a very exciting time to be part of a thriving team striving forward in the online marketing arena."
As a Google-certified company, Top Position works with clients including Majestic Wine, Shell, Ocean Finance and BUPA. It began advising clients at the start of the economic downtown that pay per click marketing is customisable, giving advertisers the freedom to align their budget to economic and commercial factors. This flexibility works particularly well when all eyes are drawn to the bottom line.
Rebecca Appleton, Top Position's operations director said, "An economic slowdown forces advertisers to hone in on their return on investment, making it particularly pleasing that so many choose Top Position to deliver the required results last month. Our experienced account managers are generating strong conversions for clients, while our SEO team is helping new clients make a splash with their online presence."

Search Engine Optimisation Service Given A Boost With Social Media Extension
"It's vital for any company serious about their search marketing to maintain a comprehensive social media presence," said department head, Rebecca Appleton. "As a forum for personalising a brand and engaging with the client base, social networking applications are second to none. However, to get the most from them they should be used as part of a wider strategy and not regarded simply as a link building opportunity.
"After months of research we have drafted these social sites in to our search marketing offering in order to foster worthwhile online communities for the brands we represent. Each of these spaces has been hand picked with a view to adding real value to our client's online activities."
According to a study by HitWise UK, a significant portion of traffic delivered to UK retail sites in 2007 originated from the top 20 social networks. Harnessing the power of this traffic is at the forefront of the Top Position service. In addition to the new social media services added, a core of social media experts manage a series of initiatives for clients including maintaining a blogging presence and creative for viral campaigns.
Daniel Jupp, director of Top Position said, "The ability to leverage social media as part of an ethical search engine optimisation campaign is a skill increasingly demanded by our clients. We've found that businesses are anxious to eke out every possible sales and brand exposure opportunity from their online activities. Developing and leveraging this niche outlet has become a real priority for our SEO team and one that has seen us introduce a dedicated social media team to consistently introduce new outlets and opportunities for clients."

SEO: Is Content Still King?
Content that works for SEO should be rich in keywords, but keyword density is a balancing act. Too low a keyword density and the content you have on the site may not be picked up by the search engines as relevant; too high a keyword density and you could be seen to be spamming, which will of course render your SEO efforts redundant.
While it seems that for now the adage 'content is king' still rings true, static content is only of limited use when thinking about search engine optimisation. Regularly refreshed content will lead to your site being deemed an 'authority' site by the search engines, which will help you move up those all-important rankings. Along with a deep site with effective internal linking, search engines love refreshed content when indexing.
There are many ways you can keep your site's content fresh and new and ready to be regularly indexed. Blogs, social media inserts and RSS are all great ways to add new regular content to your site. You can also add a news section or a press room to your site and add regularly refreshed content to these sections.
Perhaps it's time to revise that adage: 'Refreshed Content is King'! Find out more at www.TopPosition.co.uk

Top Position Search Engine Optimisation Service Is One Year Old
The first of its kind to offer social media activity as an integral part of the standard search engine optimisation process, Top Position's SEO with digital marketing offering has won legions of fans and column inches. Featured in industry magazines and lauded for its fluid take on the optimisation process, the service combines a traditional approach with fresh new thinking.
Daniel Jupp, director of Top Position said, "Top Position is incredibly proud of the ethical, results-focused service delivered by our search engine optimisation team. Despite officially launching just twelve months ago, years of research and testing have helped develop a service that is entirely transparent and client focused. Our results speak for themselves - hundreds of keywords on page one of the major search engines, optimal content produced by award winning journalists and invitations to give keynote speeches at exhibitions and events around Europe."
Made up of several core modules, the search engine optimisation process developed by the Google-certified pay per click agency is continually adapted and developed. Along with the usual link building service, on-page optimisation is approached from a reader perspective with emphasis placed on the site's user experience. New content is produced by a team of qualified journalists, providing professional web site copy within the same monthly fee as other SEO activity. By combining this use of the media with known SEO techniques, link building, social networking and even off-line PR coverage form an integral part of the measurable results.
Rebecca Appleton, Top Position operations director said, "In just twelve months, Top Position's SEO service has landed huge client wins and more than exceeded performance expectations. Having recently expanded the department with a number of new hires and several new clients, we're all eager to surpass these achievements in the course of this year."

Free Pay Per Click Account Management %u2013 Limited Period
Although Yahoo! has traditionally seen lower traffic flows, recent events have sent web users streaming onto the search engine. The result is more searches and a bigger audience for pay per click advertisers.
Elaine Loughlin, head of the Yahoo! pay per click management department at Top Position said, "In recent months clients who previously reported revenue of around 20% from Yahoo! have seen their return more than double without any increase in advertising budget or advertising spend. In some industries, Yahoo! pay per click performance is now level with or even exceeding the return from Google. This is very positive news for PPC advertisers as the cost per click is still lower."
Recognising the boost to advertisers, pay per click consultancy Top Position has launched a limited edition offer of free pay per click management on the Yahoo! platform. Designed to encourage advertisers to try the search engine as part of their overall online advertising strategy, the free management offer is available to any advertiser with a budget of £400 or more to spend on Yahoo!
Daniel Jupp, Top Position director said, "Even if a Yahoo! pay per click account has previously failed to set the world alight, our dedicated Yahoo! management department can offer a bespoke account management service. By implementing tweaks such as increased keyword spread, better monitoring traffic flows and implementing targeted advert text, we can help advertisers to see a much improved rate of return. With no contract and no commitment, we want advertisers to try a Yahoo! pay per click account and be surprised at the difference."

5 Pay Per Click Rules To Live By
pay per click campaigns need lots of tender loving care. Use them or lose them. It does takes discipline and planning to keep a campaign relevant, but revising keywords and writing eye-catching new adverts at regular intervals are good habits to get into.
Rule 2: Organisation is Key
Keeping a campaign organised means it runs more efficiently so you'll need to be on the ball and group relevant keywords into their own ad groups. Don't have hordes of general terms in one group, be ruthless and split them into smaller offerings. By doing this, adverts will be more relevant to the user, earning easy brownie points from the search engines. A higher quality score equals a lower cost per click.
Rule 3: Creative Copyrighting
If you Google your competitors, you're sure to come across a slew of almost identical adverts. Stepping away from the crowd takes imagination but can bear rich rewards. Don't stick with tried and tested formulas to woo your client base, be imaginative with language and your pay per click adverts will immediately become more eye-catching.
Rule 4: Get Mobile
Did you know that as of April 2006 there are an estimated 66 million mobile users in Great Britain (Yankee Group, Dec 2005)? Connecting users to your business with a Google AdWords pay per click mobile ad is a matter of minutes.
Rule 5: Take 1
pay per click has developed enormously in the last twelve months and mobile advertising is just one of the new faces of the pay per click phenomenon. Google has trail-blazed a path to technical superiority with the advent of pay per view video advertising. Of course, you need to create a video advert before you can introduce it to your search marketing campaign but this can be as simple or as complicated as you desire.

It's Official - Pay Per Click Powers Offline Conversions
While it is relatively simple to track online conversions from pay per click advertising on search engines such as Google and Yahoo thanks to an abundance of PPC conversion tracking software in the marketplace, the value of pay per click advertising on the offline marketing mix has remained something of a mystery until now.
The research firm found that 39% of searchers were influenced in their offline activities by search and online channels. Such a high conversion rate suggests that rather than considering pay per click as an add-on, marketers must now look at PPC advertising as an intrinsic part of the marketing mix.

Creating Killer PPC Adverts
How to plan and write effective ppc adverts
A killer pay per click advert stands out from the crowd and drives the right kind of traffic to the web site. It describes the product or service being offered but leaves the reader wanting more information. It isn't a hard sell but it does make the casual surfer sit up and take notice.
The success of your pay per click advert depends on your choice of keywords and where they are positioned within the ad text. Omitting important terms from the advert wording is a common mistake. This has greater implications than a less than memorable advert- if Google AdWords is your platform of choice, it also means you're missing out on vital quality score points.
Based on your campaign infrastructure and relevance of related groupings, the AdWords quality score demonstrates your campaign's ability to give search users exactly what they've gone online to find. In pay per click terms, this means ensuring the keywords used to trigger the adverts are strategically placed within the advert itself. Not only does this earn Google brownie points, it can lead to a lower cost per click and better positioning. More importantly, it stands out to the search user, demonstrating the advertiser's ability to provide what the surfer is looking to acquire. More Pay Per Click articles and stuff here!

Improve Your Quality Score
1. Make Your Adverts Relevant
Badly written advert text is a common cause of a low quality score. Omitting important keywords from the advert wording means you're missing out on easy brownie points. Be as specific as possible. If you sell leather sofas and leather sofa is one of your keywords, use the same phrasing in your advert text. Making your advert relevant to your keywords will raise your quality score, giving you a better position within the search platform.

How Do You Choose Your PPC Platform?
Google, Yahoo or MSN...
Much like the search engines themselves, each PPC platform has its own ups and downs. Choosing the right one for your pay per click is a critical business decision.
MSN is the PPC newcomer despite more than a decade of dominance in the IT industry. Traffic levels are lower but the cost per click reflects this. Conversions are MSN's pay per click strong point but the dashboard can be tricky to work your way around. However, it's multiple targeting and advanced demographic targeting features make it well worth a look. Interested? Find out more here: http://www.topposition.co.uk/go/msn_services.html
Yahoo is next up in search engine traffic volume. Google may remain the global search engine of choice but advertisers on Yahoo's newly branded Search Marketing (formerly known as Overture) programme enjoy a wider range of affiliate exposure. Yahoo uses this networking to generate around 5.7 million targeted leads every month for its advertisers.
The amount your business is prepared to pay for each keyword entered in the campaign dictates where the pay per click advert is positioned relative to competitor's submissions. Yahoo has the upper hand here, offering a transparent bidding system. Clients log on and enter a keyword to see how much current advertisers pay for the same term. Effectively you can then buy the listing position you want depending on how much you are prepared to pay per click relative to other users. Tempted? http://www.topposition.co.uk/go/yahoo_services.html
Ah, finally we get to Google! Google's submission procedure offers one considerable advantage; speed of use. Advert submission is instant, putting a new or revised pay per click advert online immediately providing simple guidelines governing advert length and editorial codes are adhered to.
Little if any forward planning is required on the part of the advertiser to introduce new campaigns and special offers at the touch of the button. Similarly, pausing discontinued products or oversubscribed services is also the work of moments, giving pay per click advertisers the highest level of control over their internet presence.
Google's bidding system is not transparent meaning you can spend a lot of time trying to get the perfect position at a realistic prize. More Handy Hints Here!
