A Staycation is No Way to Vacation!

STAYCATION VS. VACATION NOT AN ALTERNATIVE

Strike the word STAYCATION from the vocabulary!

What in the world is a STAYCATION?
Definition: A vacation spent close to home. (From Urban Dictionary)

The media is spreading this as the norm. It is described as what people are doing in a tough economy, vacationing close to home or not traveling at all. Or worse yet, vacationing in their own backyards.

I am all for quality family time, no matter where it is spent. There is no denying some people are staying close to home. Some are short on funds or unemployed.

It should not become an accepted alternative.

Because hardworking people deserve more. They need time off for mental health. A change of familiar scenery.

Every travel trip does not have to be grand and far away to be a good vacation. Many live in areas with great destinations within a few hundred miles. Yes, the economy has been very tough on everyone's budgets. But it takes insight and a little ingenuity to get around the roadblocks of life.

Some tout the rest and relaxtion on a 'staycation' by not having the hassle of airports etc. But the type of travel accomodations can help you have a more relaxed vacation. Start with the destination...if you need it go to a relaxing and quiet destination. Why not choose a hotel not so close to the rat race? Or choose a vacation condo, villa or bed & breakfast? What the heck, get a massage while on vacation. Don't overbook tours and activities, choose quality ones.

Note: For those fortunate enough to still be traveling this is for you also...This information can still save you money. Check it out.

“Travel in this economy has become very cheap in price and big on value. Get packing.”

What is your opinion of this STAYCATION thing?

You have the stage now.....

The only acceptable Staycation is if you or a loved one cannot travel for some reason. Or you won't be able to pay the rent next month if you vacation. Don't let STAYCATIONS become a way of life.

It is OK not to accept your reality. But do something to change it. Dont' just fit into the mold. Think outside the box. Do what others won't do.....so you will be able to do later what others can't do.

Do You Think A Staycation is good?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

YES

mulberry says:

Although I generally prefer a vacation away from home, there are times when a staycation can be just what the doctor ordered. For me, they are two different animals.

sandyspider says:

It can be. Especially if you are one of the many unemployed and money is tight. Camping out in the backyard isn't so bad. We do try to at least go camping away from home. Our dog comes with us, since he is family.

sandyspider says:

I think it can be. Traveling is getting more expensive. If you are one of the many unemployed and money is tight, maybe camping in the backyard wouldn't be so bad. We do try to get in a least one camping trip in away from home. Even our dog is included in this one.

Pastiche says:

I like a modified staycation - travel just far enough to be away from home and the demands of daily life.

Tiddledeewinks says:

I like a staycation, but I suppose it would depend on where a person lives.

Frankster says:

I think Staycations are very nice and maybe something we should do more often. However, it is not a vacation. You can't get away from the dishes, laundry, phone, housecleaning on a Staycation. I think you gotta get away from it all and be and feel pampered!

TheGreenerMe says:

Sure! Sometimes we travel far, sometimes near. We live around a lot of great places within just an hour -- Cape Cod, the Islands, New Hampshire, Maine, Newport -- all great places. So, yes, a staycation is still good.

GrowWear says:

Staycations are good, too. Gives folks a chance to break away from the work world and enjoy their surroundings without that added burden of having to leave home unless they want to.

SaraMu says:

To each her own, I say.

dc64 says:

Sometimes, travelling can be more stressful than it's worth. Time to just do nothing what-so-ever can be more of a vacation than going somewhere unfamiliar.

Webcodes says:

With the economy the way it's tanking, I think a Staycation may be the only way to go this year.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

To have a great vacation doesn't mean you have to fly half way around the world. We do Staycations a lot. If they're planned out, they can be a lot of fun. We live close to the beach. We spend a lot of Staycation time on the water. Its fun.

purplelady says:

A Staycation can be staying in your home community or state. As you mentioned in your above opening explanation, staycations can mean staying at a "tourist" spot right in your own area. Many times we ignore the places in our area that others will come to as tourists. One can usually find a very accommodating, yet less expensive, place to stay close to the attraction of the area.

I agree with the need to get away to relax; but I disagree that one cannot do that at home. Treat our grill as our kitchen stove, stock up on food items similar as we would if we were in a hotel/motel with a coffee maker, refrig. and microwave in our room. Eat differently than usual; eat as when we are on vacation. Read books, do movie marathons, do not answer the phone or emails (unless you have to). Relax, enjoy each other and still have your own pillow and bed at night. Sounds like a vacation to me; ooops, I mean staycation.

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

Staycations can be fantastic. My city, Ottawa, has way too many things to do -- local sites and attractions plus a summer full of festivals! There are just too many choices!

NO

janices7 says:

I think staycations are much easier if you live on the East coast or where there are lots of attractions within driving distance. When I lived in Virginia, we did lots of local adventures. However now that we are back in Minnesota with the brutal winters and long drives to get ANYwhere, staycations aren't quite as practical. Obviously if you are struggling to make ends meet, than by all means a staycation is a good option once in a while. However, I love to travel and I think it is essential to get outside the U.S. every so often in order to appreciate what you have and to see how other people live. As Mark Twain once said, 'Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.' I can't say it any better than that!!

says:

I live in Canada and the winters are harsh. I need to go far South where it is warm for a vacation :)

MexicoLarry says:

Exploring your hometown is great, but if you stay at home it's hard to break out of your routine, and to get away from the phone/email,etc. I think it's still better to get away for a vacation, and if money is tight, then you have to choose more economical places to stay and activities, but still get away!

Piksychick says:

No way. A a staycation is for those who never traveled before, it's in comfort zone for them.

“Online travel has evolved again, Don't vacation or staycation..Take a PAYCATION!”

Alternatives To A Staycation

Travel is now more affordable than ever. Also there are other ways to afford travel. By making the money spent on travel go farther than you ever imagined. Learning how to stretch your dollars and get more travel amenities than you ever imagined. Learn how to travel like the insiders! Learn how to make money on travel!

People on the move create more than just a good economy. It can promote better family and business relationships. Don't believe me...just look at the face of family/ friends or someone in the office that just took a vacation. Makes you want to wipe the smile off their face...doesn't it?

And for the doubters....do I have an interest in this topic? Certainly yes! My first interest is my love of travel and desire to see everyone be able to do the same, not just myself. And wanting to share something that can help people.

Don't just sit on the sidelines and listen to your friends/families tell their world travel stories. Get moving and change your reality.

I love to travel so when we have money we do. At other times I love to check out places close to home. In either case it's nice not to spend much money but to talk with the local people, eat in local restaurants and stay at bed and breakfasts.

I left my opinion on the staycation above. Since it didn't show up I wrote it twice. Now I am assuming that it is pending approval. I never heard of it called that. Funny, before I read this we were talking about camping in our backyard this year. Great article. 5*s

Thanks for congratulating me on the top 100 for my Wisconsin lens.

I live in Maine known as "vacationland", so there is a lot of day trips to explore for a life time if one wanted to. Although I'm near the beaches where tons of tourists come, I'd rather be in the country and avoid the crowds. I don't like beaches much. I like a brook and quiet country roads. New Hampshire is just next door and I like traveling there. Now I just need to meet my country and dog loving soul-mate to travel with (or better yet, stay home with).

We always go on a "staycation" even if in addition to a far-away trip. It's all about finding fun things to do, not about the distance. Nice debate.

Hmm, my duel response seems to have gone *poof*, but basically I said that staying near home sure isn't a BAD thing (we live near the Grand Canyon, and that's an awesome place to spend a lot of time), but we tend to do the long weekend thing in the area and spend longer vacations out of town and usually out of state. I love the adventure of going to far-off places that I've never been, and re-visiting locations I haven't seen in a while. It's fun to say, "Hey, I remember this!" and discover new things about a place at the same time. We hike and camp a lot, so our out-of-area vacations often don't cost all that much anyway.
