Making Money With Squidoo Ain't Easy

Squidoo payout structure

Alright, so here's how it works folks, in simple layman terms.

Squdidoo pays out for every lens, 50/50 from the ad revenue, according to a certain payout structure. Though the structure changes every month, you're pretty much guaranteed to make some money if you're in the TOP 3 payout structures.

Squidoo Payout Structure #1

Where you make the most money

So Squidoo's first payout structure includes approximately the first 2,000 lenses. Which mean, you need to be RANKED in the top ten 2,000 lenses in order to make this amount of money.

For May 2008, for example, tier 1 got paid $8.32 per lens. That's a pretty hefty sum. Imagine if you had 10 lenses in the first tier!!

For $8 question then, how do you get your lens in the top tier? This is mostly information from the lens rated #1. It's gotta be good, so here we go:

1. Get visits to your lens
2. Get your lens rated (highly)
3. Get comments
4. Have people blog about your lens
5. Have people email your lens
6. Have people favorite your lens
7. Get links to your lens
8. Be patient - we're talking 6 months

Alright, moving on...

Squidoo Payout Structure #2

Where you can a little bit of money

Getting into Squidoo's 2nd payout structure is much easier because you only have to be in the top 10,000 lenses. Yep - only. According to Squidconomy, the payment for May 2008 for a 2nd tier lens was $1.42. It's not going to bring the cow home, and it's a significant decrease from Tier 1.

On the other hand, you can do significantly less work and get away with being in the top 10,000 lenses.

So for the $1.42 question, what do you have to do to get in the top 10,000 lenses?

Well that's an easy question. Just do less of what you have to do get into the top 2,000.

Squidoo Payout Structure #3

Just enough to wet your appetite.

Well, down to tier 3, the top 50,000 lenses.

What do you get, at least in May of 2008, 7 cents a lens. That's right.

So you've gotta have something like 120 lenses to make the same amount for ONE lens in tier 1. That's A LOT of work.

Making Money with Squidoo

The final analysis

Alright, let's put everything together. There is something on the magnitude of 500,000 lenses on Squidoo, and growing.

You've pretty much gotta be in the top %10 percent of lenses to make any money, and to get there you've gotta do a bunch of promoting and link begging.

So let's say you:

1. Make 10000 lenses: x 10 min/lens / 60min/hr = 170 hours (or about 4 weeks of full time work)

Then, your choices are:

2. Promote each lens so it's in the top 50,000 - i.e. hold 20% of all the top spots (do you really think that's realistic?). 10,000 x 0.07 = $700/month

or:

3. Take 10% of those and promote them like crazy to get them in Tier 2. At which point, you could make 1000 x 1.32 = $1320/month

or:

4. Take 10% of those and promote them like crazy to get them in Tier 1. At which point, you could make 100 x 8.42 = $842/month

Steps 2-4 will take month and months and months. So after about a year and thousands of hours, you could probably make a couple of thousand dollars a month. Now that's some hard work for make money. :)

Of course, you can always go into web hosting and make a crapload promoting web hosts (such as google web hosting or make money with hostgator reseller).

Thanks for this info. It is really tough to get under the 2,000 rank, but I have a few lenses that are making their way there. I think the key is to let your lenses "simmer." Also, the more you enjoy making the lens, the better it will do, because your passion really comes through. Good luck everybody!

Thanks for the info it was just what I was looking for. I create lenses for a combination of fun and passion and the little extra money is a bonus although I am striving to hit that top tier, you never know Squidoo may payout a lot more in 5 years. Favorite and 5*'s!

The whole world is your competition as long as they have a computer and can spell. If they have an image that is helpful to. I sometimes wish that membership at squidoo is now closed to new members, but is it the world, capitalism or the American Way that competition thrives. The early bird gets the worm, or the better man or woman wins, brains or braun, well definitely brains, typing skills, maybe a little html knowledge, its not what you know but who you know, luck also plays a factor, but competition is so fierce I just take all my work, since it is my own and I take it to other platforms as well and hopefully in the end can provide the entire future generations with some useful knowledge. One day our posterity may look at squidoo.com and all the myriad lenses there as museum pieces which archived will be yet another database from which to pull out knowledge, like the library of congress, I get so discouraged I want to scream. Putting forth my best effort and 1000's of hours for...

I don't understand Squiddoo enough to bother with it, but your post here makes it real evident that I don't have time for this.

As long as you're having fun, everything else is bonus. I'll tell you, it's not that fun writing about something like yahoo web hosting when you can write about what a good time you had last night out at the club....but the latter probably won't make you any money. :)
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Jun 20, 2008 @ 9:52 pm | delete
I understood the payouts before I started writing lenses. I not counting on my Squidoo paycheck to replace my regular paycheck. I'm on Squidoo because I like to write and its fun. Between Squidoo, writing articles, and my blogs, I make a fair parttime income. I'm happy.

I didn't know this was how payouts were done. I guess I just assumed that it was a revenue sharing structure. Either way I don't make my squidoo pages for the money I do it for the... fun
