Is PayPal enabling minors to bid on eBay?
The Paypers, the leading news source for the payment industry, broke the story saying "PayPal is testing the PayPal Student Account system with a limited number of customers, allowing children aged 13 and up to make online purchases on websites that accept PayPal as a payment method."
Is PayPal really that desperate to capture the teenage market? At least, for now, the "PayPal Student Account" is a debit card account funded by the parents. But will the debit only card morph into a credit card for minors in the future?
Currently eBay requires that buyers be at least 18 years old to purchase items on eBay. Is the PayPal Student Account a step toward lowering the required buyer age on eBay? With a PayPal Student Account card, what's to stop a minor from buying items on eBay? Many young teens already buy on eBay right now with their parent's eBay ID and debit or credit card.
Last night I read about this on the eBay PayPal Discussion Board. Thus far only two posts out of 32 support letting 13 year olds use a Pay Pal account for shopping. [Update: 306 posts now.]
Why is PayPal offering student accounts to minors?
Until October 20, eBay sellers could state in their eBay listings that they accepted checks and money orders. A lot of teenagers paid for items this way. Now, sellers are required to accept PayPal or another online payment method and are not allowed to request that buyers pay with cash or money orders.
The testing of the PayPal Student Account coincides [although a bit late] with eBay's requirement to do away with the provision to give buyers the option to pay by check or money order. How will these young teenagers conveniently buy things now? With the PayPal Student Account, of course.
Is this like credit card assaults on college campuses?
On college campuses, for the price of a t-shirt, credit card companies lure college students 18 - 21 into their credit card traps. For some college students, it's like selling their birthright and the beginning of their post graduate downward spiral. Now PayPal is taking aim at our kids when many are still wet behind the ears! Just ask school teachers, church youth directors, or social workers, how responsible are 6th and 7th graders? You'll get mixed reviews. Some are responsible and some kids aren't. Some are conscientious and some are still waiting to "get it." The parents will have to decide.

Should 13 year olds have Student PayPal Accounts?
What's your opinion?
Would 15 or 16 be better if PayPal is determined to lower the age?
