Find Peace Corps Holiday Gifts in this Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Gift Guide

Peace Corps Themed Gifts help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011. It doesn't seem possible that it's been 50 years, almost my whole life. It was in March of 1961 that President John F. Kennedy officially launched the Peace Corps, with Sargent Shriver as the first leader. Since then over 190,000 Volunteers have been making a difference in over 130 Countries Worldwide.

Find Unique Peace Corps Holiday Gifts from The The National Peace Corps Association (NPCA), the nation's leading nonprofit organization supporting Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and the Peace Corps community. You will also find other Peace Corps themed gifts.

The Peace Corps Experience

I joined the Peace Corps in 1997 and was sent to Romania to help them set up Foster Care Programs for the abandoned children that had lived their lives in Orphanages during the communist regime. I was excited, nervous, and a bit scared as I had no idea what to expect. In the beginning Washington didn't even tell you where you were going, they just named a few countries that I might be assigned to, none of which I had even heard of. I had to go to the library to learn about these countries.

Later I learned how it worked; they try to match skills to volunteer openings. I had worked over 25 years with abused and neglected children as well as juvenile delinquents. I had also been a Foster Mother, so when Romania started the very first Social Services Sector to their mission they were looking for volunteers to help.

Originally I was to go to Jordon to help women learn how to sell their handmade goods as a business. I was very excited, but then the area became unstable and I was reassigned to Romania. It was a hard assignment and not everyone made it out of training. We lost about half our volunteers before the first year was up for a variety of reasons. Being a Peace Corps Volunteer in the early years after the fall of communism was more than challenging to say the least. However, for me, it was a fantastic experience-sometimes sad, sometimes happy, times of questioning why I was there, and times where I knew I had made a difference.

They say that the Peace Corps is "the toughest job you will ever love", and that most people get out of it much more than they give. I wholeheartedly agree with this. Here I wrote about Peace Corps Romania and The friendships I made. It was a tough job, but one that I would do again in a heartbeat!

I ought to get something with the PC logo on it... all I have is a t-shirt we made in training and it's pretty much unreadable.

It is hard to believe that the Peace Corps is 50 years old. Very nice idea, Kathy.

Wow! What a wonderful lens! I like to read your stories about the time you were in the Peace Corps, you always write this in a way that sticks the reader to their screen! And I was surprised to learn they'd have a gift guide. The Web is wonderful: we learn every day!

I've always been so impressed with the work the Peace Corps does, and has done, and can't believe it's now nearly 50 years old. That longevity says a lot for the good it has done over the years. A commemorative gift would make a very special gift, not just for current and former Peace Corps volunteers, but for everyone who admires the work and good will brought about by the Peace Corps

    Wow!

I have utmost respect for anyone who cares for others in this way. We all want to help, but only the few have the guts to take action and actually sacrifice to help others.
