1000 Paper Cranes of Peace

Paper cranes have been used a symbol of peace since the second world war. In the 1950's a young girl Sadako Sasaki, a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing, but a victim of atom bomb disease (leukemia), hoped to fold 1,000 cranes to grant her wish while she was in the hospital.*

Every year thousands of people around the world fold paper cranes as an expression of hope for a world at peace. Many use them for special occasions, to make a wish, to remember a loved one or send them to the Children's Memorial in the Peace Park in Hiroshima.

* The legend of the crane is that if you fold 1,000 origami cranes, any wish you have will be granted. Peace cranes have been used to promote a world where people can live without fear.
