I have a dream

tweet

Music is the language of the soul. It knows no barriers of country, race or religion. It unites man to man and man to the Infinite. So isn't it in the order of things, after putting Bill Gates' $600 Billion Challenge and Five Charities Bill Gates Supports in motion, that I should publish a lens on the music I like? Music for peace.

(Note: I had published the full lyrics of the songs in this lens but have edited to show just a few lines as publishing full lyrics violates copyright and is against Squidoo's TOS.)

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote:"Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire."

Let us dream together about that day.

Music for World Peace

Last Night I had the Strangest Dream

Ed McCurdy (1950)

Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
The room was filled with men
And the paper they were signing said
They'd never fight again

Bhopali, the Raga of Renewal

An Eternal Raga from India

Raga Bhopali is a melody of rebirth. Every time I listen to it I fall into a deep ecstatic state. I see colorful butterflies and flowers. If I close my eyes I can even smell it. It has the sweet perfume of honey.

Sometimes I imagine batallions of sitar players spreding the word of peace around the world. Will it ever happen? Let us dream.

Sto Peligiari (Denial)

Giorgios Seferis, Greek Nobel-Prize poet

On the secret seashore
white like a dove
we thirsted at noon;
but the water was brackish.

On the golden sand
we wrote her name;
but the sea-breeze blew
and the writing vanished.

With what spirit, what heart,
what desire and passion
we lived our life: a mistake!
So we changed our life...

The healing power of Sufi music

"Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened. Don't open the door to the study and begin reading. Instead, take down a musical instrument. Let the beauty we love be what we do." Sufi mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, 13th Century.

"...to the newcomer, it might even seem quite startling to discover that, for example, qawwali from Pakistan and India is linked spiritually and historically to, say, the "whirling dervishes" of Turkey or the Wolof-language praise songs from Senegal. However, all these different facets of ritual and performance have the same goal in mind: to lose oneself in remembering God and in drawing closer to the divine." Nat Geo Music

We are the world

There comes a time
When we hear a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We are the world
We are the children...

Ode to Joy

Friedrich Schiller

Joy, beautiful spark of Gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter, fire-imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.
Thy magic powers re-unite
What custom's sword has divided
Beggars become Princes' brothers
Where thy gentle wing abides.

Be embraced, millions!
This kiss to the entire world!
Brothers - above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.
Whoever has had the great fortune,
To be a friend's friend,
Whoever has won the love of a devoted wife,
Add his to our jubilation!

Ode to Joy is the anthem of the European Union and the Council of Europe. The anthem is based on the final movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony composed in 1823.

Lara's Theme

The symbol of peace, love, music, and self-identification

Somewhere, my love, there will be songs to sing
Although the snow covers the hopes of Spring
Somewhere a hill blossoms in green and gold
And there are dreams, all that your heart can hold
Someday we'll meet again, my love
Someday whenever the Spring breaks through

What they have said about music

Yehudi Menuhin : Music is a therapy. It is a communication far more powerful than words, far more immediate, far more efficient.

Billy Joel: I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from everyone loves music.

Victor Hugo: Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.

Hafiz : Many say that life entered the human body by the help of music, but the truth is that life itself is music.

Pat Conroy: Without music, life is a journey through a desert.
