The Christmas Classic Christmas from David Bowie and Bing Crosby
Peace on Earth / The Little Drummer Boy is one of my all time favorite contemporary Christmas Song and remains so year after year.
The song comes from an Bing Crosby Christmas special in 1977 with the very unlikely duet of Bing Crosby and a young David Bowie.
It's hard to believe it has been almost 35 years since this Christmas song of peace was first performed. The song still resonates deeply with me as a song of peace, goodwill and a heartfelt Christmas wish for my daughters.

An Old Chestnut Holiday Song
Several years ago, it was much harder to find music or video clips of the Bowie / Crosby performance. I was able to get a copy on a Starbuck's Winterludes Christmas CD in the late 1990's so had a version to listen to during the holidays.Fortunately Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy has become a favorite holiday classic. Time Union polled their readers in their 2009 Tournament of Carols and crowned "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" by Bing Crosby and David Bowie the Capital Region's favorite holiday song.
The CD and the Video Clip are now readily available and still even a few MP3 versions are available for downloading.
The classic song has been covered by many different singers over the years. In November 2010 the Priests released a new version featuring Shane MacGowan. Jack Black and Jason Segel became another unlikely pairing as they sang a fun and more rocked out cartoon version of Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy 2010 to support Blue Star Families. As Jack Black noted, "We rocked an old chestnut, holiday song."

One of my all time favorite Christmas songs as has been pointed out, it is a mashup of two songs long before mashups became poplar, the Little Drummer Boy written in 1941 and a new song written for the special.
The powerful "Peace on Earth" lyrics were written by Ian Fraser, Larry Grossman and Buz Kohan as a counter melody. Bowie and Crosby sung the songs together.
