What Is The Connection Between Peace of Mind...Problems... and Worry?

Many "spiritual" disciplines, philosophies, teachers, and even a few business "gurus" tell us there are no "problems", only opportunities and challenges.

The problem is they don't tell us HOW to develop, live and work from that perspective in a practical way. The perspective rings hollow and actually seems like mere wishful (crazy) thinking when things aren't going our way.

The question is: "How can YOU actually see and experience things from that perspective? Yes, how can YOU live as if you had no problems, enjoying peace of mind, calm.. and freedom from anxiety and worry, no matter what is happening?

What would your life be like if, deep down, you really, truly believed that nothing was a problem for you? Not just intellectually, but felt it in your gut?

Notice, I'm not saying there are no problems. I'm just saying that living from the perspective that there are no problems is a very useful, calming and powerful one.

What Is Worry & Anxiety?

A well accepted theory of anxiety originally posited by Liebert and Morris in 1967 suggests that anxiety consists of two components; worry and emotionality. Emotionality refers to physiological symptoms such as sweating, increased heart beat and raised blood pressure.

Worry refers to negative self-talk that often distracts the mind from focusing on the problem at hand. For example, when students become anxious during a test, they may repeatedly tell themselves they are going to fail, or they can't remember the material or that their teacher will become angry with them. How do YOU view problems- as occasions that remind you that you may not be able to handle something, or as opportunities to demonstrate you can handle anything?

What difference do those two viewpoints make, for you? As you know, when you view something as a problem, there is a strong tendency to be less relaxed, less resourceful and more limited in your view of things; narrowing your choices too quickly, instead of exploring your options and looking for opportunities.

Simply put, when you believe something is a problem, you're more likely to make poor choices-- and not even see other, better choices. You're more likely to act like Barney Fife, instead of MacGyver.

A simple, step by step plan for dissolving your "problems" is:

1 Look at your assumptions. Identify which assumptions are making you think there is a "problem."

2 Let go of assumptions you can't prove are true.

3 Recycle back to # 1, until there's no longer the feeling that it's a problem

You're not going to stand for believing in "problems" anymore, are you?
