Just What The Heck Is A Pea Coat Anyhow?

A pea coat is a heavy wool outer coat, originally worn by sailors in European navies. Peacoats are generally double breasted, with broad lapels, and vertical or slash pockets.

The pea coat is now considered a classic style, and is worn by many people who are not sailors. It's warmth and comfort make it a great coat to have when you're standing on the bridge of a ship in the middle of a storm... or just a windy day on dry land. Whether or not your a sailor, the pea coat is a warm and stylish jacket.

Where do we get the name "pea coat"

The name "pea coat" actually has nothing to do with the legumes we call peas.

The name comes from the Dutch word "pij", for a type of cloth. Peacoat was first used in the 18th century.
