Cross Stitch Terminology
My Personal Experience With Peacocks
We had several on a farm many years ago. They really are wonderful birds and got quite tame. They would eat from my hand and display their fabulous plumage for me. My most fond memories are from the simple task of mowing the lawn I'd have a train of peacocks and geese following eagerly snapping up the bugs that were startled from the mower. I have owned a lot of birds over the years but none brought as much enjoyment just walking around the yard than the peacocks did.
Glossary of Cross Stitch Terminology
The Peacock Cross Stitch Terminology Glossary
Aida - a cloth specifically designed for use in cross stitching.
Count - determines the size of the finished cross stitch by the size of the squares in the aida cloth. The same pattern could be two totally different sizes depending on which count size you choose.
Chart - A preprinted graph detailing the colors and placement for your stitches. (also known as a Pattern or Graph) Floss and fabrics need to be purchased separately.
Cross Stitch Kit - Generally contains everything you need to complete the project excluding framing and matting..
Embellished Usually means part of the images is pre-stamped on the fabric and meant to be shown as part of the finished work.
Stamped Cross Stitch - The cloth is pre-stamped with the design placement for ease of use. This may be meant to wash away though some companies use this term interchangeably with embellished..
Floss - several strands of thread combines to make floss which is usually cotton. These strands may be separated and mixed on the more complicated patterns.
Needlepoint Is very similar to cross stitch except the stitch type varies and a canvas mesh is used to for pulling yarn, thread, or floss through instead of a lighter weight fabric.
Perforated Paper The paper version of aida cloth. May be painted for extra details.
Thread - May be used to indicate floss though it can also be silk or metallic in nature.

Counted Cross Stitch Chart/Graph Japanese Artist Ohara Shoson's Peacocks

Ohara Shoson (Koson, Hoson) was a Japanese-style painter and printmaker. He began as a student of Suzuki Koson. He painted flora and fauna between 1895-1902, becoming recognized as a "Nihonga" painter in the 'Kacho-ga' (nature print) genre. During the Russo-Japanese war he produced a few 'Senso-e' (war prints). The majority of his early prints (1900 -1912) were published by Kokkeido and Daikokuya and were designed for the foreign market. All were signed "Koson". Between 1912-1926 he again devoted himself to painting. Using the name 'Shoson', he returned to the woodblock medium, collaborating with Watanabe. Shoson did produce some prints using the name "Hoson' which were published by Kawaguchi between 1930-1931, but the majority of his prints were published by Watanabe.
