Peanut History

type=textThe peanut is said to have originated in South America. The only proof of this is that jars of peanuts have been found in the graves of ancient Incas. Spanish explorers spread the peanut throughout the world, mainly in Africa and Asia. Peanuts were introduced in the United States by African slaves. The slaves brought peanuts with them and planted crops in the south. There was a surge in the popularity of peanuts during the Civil War. Soldiers fround peanuts readily available and a quick source of food. Peanuts were eventually roasted and in the early 1900's, peanut butter was invented. Today peanuts are used in candy, salads, main dishes and desserts. Peanut butter accounts for over half of all peanut consumption.
