The Peanut Pet Shelter in Playa del Carmen, Mexico
This is a no-kill pet shelter run by a young British couple in the popular tourist destination, Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Andy and Jen MacDonald are attempting to address the problem of abandoned and unloved animals that roam our streets and are often abused and suffering. They take these animals into their home (currently, 80 dogs and many cats) and provide veterinary care, spay/neutering services, food, and love as they attempt to find homes for as many as possible.

What is The Peanut Pet Shelter?
The Peanut Pet Shelter is attempting to address the animal over-population problem in this very poor area, getting dogs and cats off the street where they are often ill, starving, abused, or injured. It provides endless love, not only for the animals themselves, but for those fortunate enough to adopt these sweetly affectionate and grateful creatures.Through generous donations, the shelter has recently been able to expand its space beyond the small yard and house where it began. The shelter was able to rent an adjacent lot and is in the process of being cleared the land and building proper kennels for the animals. Still, 80 dogs and cats are a lot of mouths to feed and finding the money to do so is full-time, difficult work. It is our hope to establish and maintain a consistent stream of financial support for the shelter so that much more can be done for these loving animals and never will any animal have to be refused or turned away.
I've seen how tirelessly Andy and Jen work to provide for these animals and their effect on them is tremendous. The dogs become socialized and calm with other animals AND with people as volunteers show up each Saturday for Puppy Wash Day. They deserve all the help they can get with this enormous non-profit project that they have taken on.

- Andrea - Every Saturday, the pet shelter opens its doors for anyone who wants to come to help bathe the dogs, administer meds, clip nails, de-tick etc. It's not glamorous work, but with 80 dogs on the premises, they need all the helpful hands they can get. The location of the shelter cannot be disclosed publically. Please contact me at michelekinnon [at] gmail [dot] com..[in reply to andrea]
