When a Child Has Cancer

A cancer diagnosis can be devastating for an adult... how much scarier is it for a child? Kids battling cancer need all the support they can get from friends and family, especially since they can feel lonely and isolated. Visits aren't always practical, so what else can you do when you want to help?

Practical Gifts Are Always Welcome

What Can You Give?

If you know a child who has been diagnosed with cancer, it's a given that you want to do something for them. Flowers and plants aren't appropriate (and aren't allowed in the hospital or treatment center due to the patient's depressed immune system), and loads of candy bars will probably go uneaten due to the nausea that often accompanies treatment.

So what gifts can you give? Below, I've listed some practical ideas for things you can include in a gift basket or tote bag that will be very welcome. Some items are more appropriate for smaller children, while others would be better for an older child. You'll have to make that determination yourself, as well as considering the child's own preferences and personality.

Apart from gifts, you'll also want to send greeting cards often. Staying in touch is very important, as kids can feel isolated and alone, cut off from normal activities and their friends. Artist Corrie Kuipers and Nene Adams have teamed up to create very special greeting cards just for kids. The images are bright, upbeat and cheerful; the messages are positive and come from the heart.

Just wanted to let you know that yours is the first lens that I've read. This article is EXTREMELY well written. The advice that you give to those who need to find a gift for a child with cancer is invaluable. I am going to use your list to make care packages this weekend. I am adding this article as one of my favorites!
