Picturesque Fishing Village and Lighthouse
In October of 2010 we took a cruise to the eastern coast of Canada with stops in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec City. Our first stop was Halifax, and since lighthouse photography is my hobby a trip to Peggy's Cove was a must. It was a crisp fall day and the drive itself was
beautiful. The colors were in full array and I enjoyed the drive to Peggy's Cove. As we got closer to Peggy's Cove, the landscape changed abruptly and instead of beautiful trees there was granite boulders everywhere I looked.
The day was perfect for photographs. A bright blue sky with puffy white clouds made a great backdrop for my photographs of the lighthouse and the fishing village.

Where is Peggy's Cove?
how was it named
As the legend goes, there was a ship wrecked nearby and the people of the area all rushed out in their boats to help. Unfortunately there was only one survivor, a young girl. This girl could not remember her name so the family that took care of her called her Peggy. Peggy ended up staying in the area and marrying a local resident. People would call her Peggy of the Cove and eventually the area was just called Peggy's Cove.

The first lighthouse was built at Peggy's Cove in 1868, at that time it would have been a wooden structure. The current lighthouse was built in 1914. It is an octagonal lighthouse of reinforced concrete and stands nearly 50 feet hight. It is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard.

Fishing Village of Peggy's Cove
From the beginning the economy of small community of Peggy's Cove revolved around fishing. After World War ii tourism began to come to the village. The small community has a population today of under 50 people.

Although in recent years tourism has become the biggest industry in Peggy's Cove, the local fisherman still go out and fish for lobster.

- I was there in November of 2007. Terrible weather, most attractions were closed, but no tourists! It was blowing *hard* on Peggy's Cove!

- Absolutely beautiful - I agree that the boulders have a beauty of their own, but that lighthouse is amazing!

- Lol...it is funny but I seem to be visiting a lot of Canadian lensmasters today. I am Canadian too. You and I are at opposite ends of the country though.
