Lessons From Peg: Dare To Follow Your Dreams
At first glance you may wonder why I chose an actress as one of my heroes...and more surprisingly one who was not that well known. But Peg Phillips was an inspiration to me.
Here was a woman who knew what she wanted to do with her life at age 4 - she wanted to be an actress - but life kept getting in her way. Pearl Harbor. Polio. Peritonitis. A ruptured aorta. Several broken bones. That job as an accountant. The death of two children. But finally at age 64 she enrolled in acting classes.
She never gave up on her childhood dream. How many of us can say that? But Peg was so much more....

"If the bible weren't The Bible, it would be banned by the bible-thumpers."
By Ruth-Anne Miller, Northern Exposure.
Peg, was best known for playing crusty shopkeeper Ruth-Anne Miller on the CBS-TV series "Northern Exposure." who dispensed psychological insight with each purchase. A woman who had lived through it all and had learned to appreciate life for everything it has to offer.Ruth-Anne provided a constant in an always turbulent town. Proprietor of a one-stop shop which served as the library, post office, local market, and video store, Ruth-Anne's quiet strength, wise words, and life experiences guided the residents of Cicely through their many crazy predicaments. Pegs Lessons: Money and Life Don't Last - Ideas Do
In 1998,at the age of 70, Phillips founded the Woodinville Repertory Theatre. It is a professional theater company in Woodinville, Washington. The company is dedicated to producing quality theater to appeal to audiences from the entire Puget Sound region.Today, the company is alive and thriving with a summer youth drama and playwriting workshop program. "She knew the value of bringing theater to young kids and getting them hooked on the arts early.""I decided we were having a grand mall seizure around here," she cracks. "There was nothing to do in my town but buy things, so I decided to start a professional theater."
AND
Peg also put together The Theater Inside, a drama program for juvenile offenders at the Echo Glen Children's Center in Snoqualmie. Echo Glen houses Washington States child offenders with crimes from robbery to murder. "They have to learn to cooperate to put on a show" she said."Some of these kids have never had to get along with anyone. The get it. They learn."

- 12 years ago while waiting for a connecting flight at San Francisco's airport, I happened to look up from where I was sitting and saw a familiar face. Taking a few minutes of observing and thinking there was no way Peg Phillips was sitting right across from me, I got the courage to sit next to her and politely ask if she was the one who played Ruth-Anne.
With a sweat grin, she leaned over and said yes. At this point, I'm in shock that noone else had come up to ask the same. Not wanting to be intrusive, I quietly thank her for the Yeats of ebtertaiment and asked if she would allow me to take a photo. She smiled and said "Of course not, that's what I do for a living."
Our few minute meeting is one I will always remember. Truly, she was one of the sweatest and inviting people I have ever met. While the other people in the airport did realize who she was, I'm glad I did. Thanks Peg!
