A Lens on the Pelvis

This is a lens on the anatomy and function of the pelvis and interesting and surprising facts!

The pelvis, or pelvic girdle, is a muscle, bone, and connective tissue structure that provides a foundation for the lower extremities, the legs and also supports a portion of the abdominal and pelvic cavities.

It is a basin-shaped structure in the skeleton of many vertebrates that is formed by the pelvic girdle together with the sacrum and often various coccygeal and caudal vertebrae and that in humans is composed of the two hip bones bounding it on each side and in front while the sacrum and coccyx complete it behind.

What is the Pelvis?

From Wikipedia

The pelvis (pl. pelvises or pelves) is the bony structure located at the base of the spine (properly known as the caudal end). It is part of the appendicular skeleton.

Each os coxae (hipbone) consists of three bones: the illium, ischium, and the pubis. The illium is the largest and upper most part, the ischium is the posterior-inferior (back-lower) part, and the pubis is the anterior (front) part of the hipbone.

The two hipbones are joined anteriorly at the symphysis pubis and posteriorly to the sacrum. The pelvis incorporates the socket portion of the hip joint for each leg (in bipeds) or hind leg (in quadrupeds). It forms the lower limb (or hind-limb) girdle of the skeleton.

Pelvic Pain

Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) is a disorder that occurs during pregnancy or postpartum that causes pain, instability and dysfunction in any of the three pelvic joints. The disorder has a long history of recognition, mentioned by Hippocrates Pubic Symphysis Separation. Fetal and Maternal Medicine Review (2002), 13: 141-155 Kelly Owens, Anne Pearson, Gerald Mason and later described in medical literature by Snelling. Pain In Childbearing, Key Issues In Management, Margaret Yerby, Lesly Page.

" The affection appears to consist of relaxation of the pelvic articulations,

becoming apparent suddenly after parturition or gradually during pregnancy and permitting

a degree of mobility of the pelvic bones which effectively hinders locomotion and gives

rise to the most peculiar and alarming sensations". Snelling (1870)''.Pain In Childbearing, Key Issues In Management, Margaret Yerby, Lesly Page.

Thank you for this good information. In recovering from back pain and sciatica I think the better informed I became the more able I was to be a proactive partner in my care and treatment. Lensrolling this to my back pain lenses to help people there learn more about the pelvis.

This is a great lens "in progress". As a woman with MS, I deal with a lot of hamstring weakness that refers pain to the hip. I also deal with pelvic pain from endometriosis. It is helpful to understand the anatomy and workings of the pelvis, very much appreciated! Diana
