Top tips on choosing the right portrait artist

Art is very personal. More and more people commission artists to create portraits of themselves or a family member. They do make a perfect gift for that big birthday, anniversary, Christmas and many more. However, it is difficult to choose the right artist for your commission. There are a few important factors to take into consideration:

1. It is important to find an artist whose style you really appreciate and who is not afraid to consider unusual requests. Always do your research. There is a lot to choose from and artists all around the world are now easily accessible and contactable through internet. So do your browsing and always make sure to check out at least three to five artists.

2. After narrowing down your search to a handful of artists, check out their previous commissions. If you can't see their work online, request some examples to be sent to you and never make a decision too quickly. You are the one going to have to live with the artwork after all!

3. Price is a huge factor too. Many people don't realise how much effort and time goes into planning and realising a work of art. A genuine artist will take their time working out the composition and making sure you, the client, are completely satisfied with it before starting to put paint on canvas. It is always good to see a sketch of some sort before the work begins. It shows that the artist is interested in pleasing you and he / she takes their work seriously. Many have a blog to show work in progress too. This is very exciting for the client as they can watch their artwork develop from the initial sketch to the final painting.

True Image creating art for customers worldwide for reasonable prices. Unusual requests are welcome. They are always happy to advise you on what photograph to choose, size and medium of your artwork. On top of that, they have their own Art in Progress Blog where you can watch your art develop from first step to the final touches.

Choosing between Acrylic and Pencil

Graphite Pencil

type=textMany of our clients find it difficult to choose between these two mediums. We offer both, because they have such great qualities.

Graphite pencil is great when translating strong shadows and highlights and creating a clear form where colour is not needed. If your photograph works as a black & white picture it will certainly work as a graphite pencil drawing. Pencil drawings are also very modern and slick and will sit in any contemporary interior. They are very eye-catching and have great texture. Drawings look well in any interior and even small rooms, where visitors can come close to the artwork and admire the detail.

Acrylics

type=textAcrylic paint is a relatively young art medium, just about hundred years old. It is very versatile and can be made to look like oil paint, watercolour or even gouache. We chose acrylic over oil especially because of its ageing qualities. It does not fade, yellow or crack with time like oils do. And yet acrylic, when used thickly, can resemble the texture of oil paint. Many artists nowadays switch from oil paint due to its toxicality, fumes and extremely slow drying time. You don't have to worry about that with acrylics, there is almost no odour and drying time is very fast, sometimes too fast. However, there are some slow drying acrylic paints available on the market.

When deciding for acrylic paint over graphite pencil, you will be looking for a more traditional look. Subjects where colour is as or more important than form translate well with acrylic as the range of colours is wide. However, as with all paints even acrylic can create muted or pastel colour scheme really well and can match any interior. The possibilities are never ending!

Using a Grid

Drawing and Painting with a Grid

I use this method for ease and speed in transferring the initial image onto art canvas or paper. First you need to prepare a grid on the original photograph by finding the exact middle. Then split the width of the page into four columns. Use the width of the columns for splitting the page vertically. This way all the grid markers (dots or crosses) have exactly the same distance between each other. With easier photographs I usually work with two columns as I don't need as many markers to help me.
This is a great way of working especially if you are starting out drawing from photographs. You can work with as many markers as you like by dividing the page as many times as you like. As you get more experience you will not need as many markers and eventually will be able to easily sketch anything. Good luck.
