A pencil had to have been the motivation for JK Rowling's notion of a magic wand with its core of one substance (graphite) and casing of another (cedar). The pencil is one of the first true magic wands

Really nice lens, with fun stuff and information. Liked all the colours as well!
  • OfficeSupplyGeek Oct 21, 2010 @ 11:13 am | delete
This is a great write up, wow. SO Much info and a ton of resources. I actually gave up uwing pencils for the longest time, but the Uniball Kuru Toga changed that for me. They are really cool, its a mechanical pencil that rotates the lead as you write, so its always sharp and it reduces the number of times the lead will break on you. I did a review of them on my blog (officesupplygeek.com) and the feedback was great, plus I've given them to friends and co-workers and they all love them as well!
  • sukkran Oct 17, 2010 @ 9:44 pm | delete
what a great lens.! learned a lesson from your well presented lens. thanks for the valuable information.
  • thesuccess Oct 13, 2010 @ 12:01 pm | delete
A pencil is still the most natural way to quickly jot down notes, and it rubs out!!
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Oct 12, 2010 @ 5:26 pm | delete
I can't imagine not having pencils. I use them all the time. The lead on the mechanical ones break too easy.
    Thanks for sharing,

What a delightful lens! Thank you for paying tribute to the unassuming pencil (as an illustrator I owe my career to it). I especially love the pencil sculpture in one of your modules, how creative! It reminded me of a CD tower a friend built out of pencils for a school project before. Great work Pamela (:

  • Debs Sep 21, 2010 @ 12:14 pm | delete
I really enjoyed this lens! Funnily enough, they showed the Simpsons classic episode again on TV the other day called "Homer's Enemy"...there's a very funny scene when Homer borrows Frank Grimes' pencils and finds all sorts of unusual uses for them! If you don't know it you should track it down...!
  • JoyfulPamela Sep 22, 2010 @ 5:18 am | delete
I have not seen that episode yet, but will be sure to try to find it! Thanks for the suggestion. :D

Getting new pencils at the first of school each year was the best. I even had some with my initials on them. Which was a pretty big then back then. I know, fancy.

When I think about pencils, I think about those tedious pensmanship lessons in school. My penmanship was never very good, maybe I can blame it on the pencil? Very interesting lens. Who knew pencils were so interesting. Congrats on LOTD.

Thank you, so much, for the spectacular Lens on one of my favorite items - the not-so-lowly pencil. By the way, I detest automatic pencils, and cheaply made pencils. A good quality, sharpenable (is that a word?) old-fashioned pencil, is a treasure! Rated and favorited - let's hear it for the pencil!
  • CreativeArtist Aug 1, 2010 @ 7:44 pm | delete
I learned some things; didn't know a pencil could make such a long line. Lensrolling to Grid Method (Drawing).

What a splendid site! Nice to find another pencil fiend! :D

Thanks for listing my Drawing and Sketching lens - much appreciated! :) You might also like to reference my lens Coloured Pencils - Resources for Artists.

For info: Some brands of coloured pencils are oil based instead of wax based and both types are much softer than pastel pencils IF they are artist grade coloured pencils. Much depends on the quality of the pencil.

There's nothing more annoying than a pointless lens. This is not one of them as your pencil fun lens clearly points out. Great, interesting and fun lens.

You know what's pretty interesting? I used to use a pencil almost every day way back when. Today, I really need to think about finding a pencil with a point to use.

You've made a great point, Julie!! With computer technology, I'm sure we all use pencils less than before since our laptops can type email letters, write stories and reports, create online calendars, etcetera! Maybe I'll have to try to make one of those pencil sculptures with all the pencils lying around our house. :D
