Why did you decide to open a business in Pendleton?
I was looking to expand a current business in Anderson, and looked to the surrounding community for a perfect antique venue. I have long been coming to Pendleton as my grandparents have lived there my entire life- as a result I spent much time in and around Pendleton. While I looked at several locations, Pendleton on the square was the perfect fit, the perfect atmosphere, and from the moment I first looked at it from a business perspective, I knew it was the perfect location. Antiques have always been best suited for the small-town destination, and Pendleton is certainly no exception. More importantly, I feel strongly connected to Pendleton and look forward to taking a more active role in the local business community.
Description of the business
A true hodge-podge of things, with traditional antiques/collectibles as the backdrop. One of the great things about this type store is while they are a dime a dozen to some, those who frequent such locations know that no two are ever alike! We are expanding from the traditional antique mall, however, and have actively sought other small businesses suitable for offering in conjunction with antiques/collectibles. In addition to furniture, we will have hand-painted tiles, silk floral arrangements, coins, books (a few to start, working on securing a permanent book dealer), antique clocks, lamps, prints, paintings, glassware, pottery, and will be offering a variety of services- from custom made items like those on display in the store to furniture refinishing.
Prices will vary based on individual dealers, but I will be working with dealers to keep prices reasonable and affordable while understanding that some of our merchandise will necessarily be expensive. At the same time we will offer lower prices on other (more common)items, striving for the "something for everyone approach." I want people to know that the vast majority of monies spent in the store go the dealers themselves (except for items I own) and most dealers are from Pendleton. We only have one or two dealers that are from further away than Anderson.
Other, more specific information will be available shortly on the website, including a cross-section of items available, with each dealer having their own section of the website, and many of the items in our inventory listed individually by category and by dealer.

Connie and Bill Earl fell in love with Pendleton while on sabbatical leave at Clemson. They decided that they would retire here and Connie thought The Square coould use a "country store". Two years later her dream became a reality.
The Mercantile has been described as having a little bit of everything. They started out with handcrafted gifts, candles, gourmet whole coffee beans (will grind to order), old fashioned candies and chocolates, Folkmanis puppets and other "toys without batteries". They now have soybean oil candles made in Pawleys Island plus a large array of Melissa and Doug Toys as well as iron Tavern Puzzles (under $20), 2009 Calendars, and a fine selection of mugs and boxes.
Shortly after opening they added art rubber stamps and Terri began teaching classes in paper arts in 1995. In 1999 Cindy join the family business and they added beads and crystals and beading making supplies. They offer the opportunity for 8 classes a week with no attendance minimum and will place special orders for you. Classes start at $18 and includes supplies. They also offer "a la carte classes" and allow you to pick from their extensive portfolio (24 hour notice required). The first person to reserve the spot picks the class and that is the class that is run.
Stop on by and you will be glad you did.
The Mercantile celebrated their 20th year in business this year.

Ken and Shirley have been on the square for 20 years and felt it was a good location to expand their business in Liberty. They say that they have enjoyed being a part of the community even though they are only open on a part-time basis.
The Framery offers custom picture framing and a variety of prints and framed art. They have a large selection of Jim Booth prints as well as other South Carolina art and decoration prints. They are often complimented on their reasonable prices and their help in choosing color and design.
I can sure vouch for that. I always trust Shirley to tell me what she thinks looks good and that is what I go with. They really do a great job and we are fortunate to have them on the square even if it is part time.

He is a native of Afghanistan and is a direct importer of carpets, beads, antiques, textiles and other handmade crafts from Central Asia. I asked Von and Linda why they chose Pendleton for their Antique Business.
The McCaskill's said that the town of Pendleton is located in an area of historical importance. Additionally, the Pendleton Historic Commission, The Pendleton Historic Foundation and the residents are active in preservation and appreciation of our Upstate Heritage which provides the perfect setting for antique businesses. The other five antique shops and the houses open for touring are added enticements for out-of-town customers to Stop, Look and Shop!
Past Times is a quality antique shop with one of the largest selections of old Southern Pottery in the nation and at reasonable prices. A diverse selection of other antiques and collectibles, tools, furniture, glassware, kitchen items, linens, jewelry, art pottery, Indian artifacts, lamps, books, records and fishing equipment. Art and Folk Art are also carried.
It is a wonderful place to browse, discover, and find that perfect gift.

Granny's Grill was named for Betty's mom who is know by all as "Granny". Granny has worked in cafes for most of her life so Betty decided that if she ever got a cafe of her own, she would name it "Granny's".
Bobby, Shelli and Betty Ann were cleaning day and night to get ready to open the Grill and gradually more and more people would stop by and offer to help. Shelli would make coffee for the workers in an old coffee maker she had and the helpers continued to come. It is for this reason that Betty Ann feels that Granny's Grill doesn't belong to her but to the people of Pendleton and it's employees. She says that it had not been for all the help they received, Granny's Grill would not be what it is today. The employees feel this and look out for it as if it belonged to them.
Granny's is a place that has no boss. No one has to be told their job. They do it and they do it well.
It is a place you can go and feel welcome. We treat everyone as family. We joke and enjoy our customers and it is for sure that their customers enjoy them.
Granny's Grill offers short orders and salads, fish plates, Philly Steak Sandwiches, Cube Steaks, and Rib-eyes. Everything we have is a specialty says Betty Ann. We make our own Slaw, Chili, and our own Homemade Soup and Corn Bread.
Their breakfast menu is wonderful, too. If anyone is looking for me on an early Saturday morning, I will be at Granny's.

Joey, Why did you decide to have a business in Pendleton?
I chose Pendleton because of its' small town atmosphere and its' good people. Being a third generation tire dealer, that element was important to me. My grandfather started Welborn Tire Service in 1943. My dad, Gerald Welborn, took it over in 1954. My two older brothers worked there from high school through college and are now operating Welborn Tire and Automotive.
I also worked for my dad from 1987 to 1994. After graduating Anderson College with a B.S. in Business Management, I moved to Charlotte and worked for a wholesale tire distributor. In 1999, I took another position as an account manager for Target Tire in Greer, SC. One of my first calls was to Pendleton Tire. It wasn't long before Grady and Nancy became one of my top accounts. Over the years, we've developed more than a business relationship, I see them as family. Grady and Nancy Seawright have been an icon in the community of Pendleton for over fifty years. I'm proud to now be a part of the Pendleton family. Pendleton is a perfect fit for me.

Pat Austin says:
Local businesses located on a typical Main Street, USA were the backbone of this wonderful Nation of ours. Too many have disappeared with the advent of large malls, back-to-back strip malls, growing cities, and discount stores. Those that have continued to prosper and grow, particularly in small towns, are due to the community supporting their local businesses, and the energy & efforts of our local business people who believe in their town, their community, and it's people. There is nothing better than entering a local business and being greeted by name and a friendly smile.

- I love your sites. I am co-owner of Avenue of Oaks Antiques & Collectibles and will be opening soon on the square, right next to the Islander. It has been amazing talking to folks around Pendleton and seeing how much they love their town. But I have to say, you must be Pendleton's number 1 fan. I would like to have our business added to you site. We're shooting for opening next Thursday (Aug 13 - believe it or not 13 is my lucky number) If you're on the square and catch us there working, please stop by. I'd love to meet you. I'll let you know any details about opening as soon as they are confirmed. email: clnixon@innova.net cell phone: 940-9713

- Okay, this is the deal, we must forever keep Edgefield pottery a secret from my husband. Just yesterday we picked up a specialty bread from a bakery and as we drove away, he mentioned we could have gone to the pottery shop next door. I reminded him that he's never gotten out of there for less than $75. The chamber of commerce of Pendleton must love you for all promotions you do!
