With the economy like it is, it is so encouraging to have a new business opening it's doors in Pendleton. I was in there yesterday to take pictures and was very impressed. Kathryn Tolbert, Manager, is no stranger to the Consignment business and has a knack for display. The shop is beautiful and filled with everything from Gucci Shoes and Jones New York sets to blue jeans.

Dennis - "After a 25 plus year career in finance, I wanted to re-locate to a small southern "Mayberry" town and open up a local community cafe/coffee shop. Pendleton fit the bill for us."

The Pendleton Cafe and Coffee Company New Hours Monday through Friday 11am to 3pm lunch only. Saturday 7am to 3pm breakfast 7am to 11am lunch 11am to 3pm Sunday closed.

Their specialty is a Great Lunch at a Fair Price.
Chicken Salad is their #1 Seller and my personal favorite. My grandson's favorite thing is their Peach Smoothie. They also offer Breakfast and Lunch Catering or Cafe Rental after 5 PM.

Come in and enjoy their Homemade Baked Goods and you can even make a special request. Oh, and bring your lap top and get some work done at the same time if you so desire.

Wollas : "Pendleton was considered to be an "antiques Mecca" for quite some time. Although we were living in Virginia at the time, we did lease space in the early 90's from a long-time Pendleton business - Billie Allen's Village Curio. Following retirement from James Madison University in Virginia, we returned to the Pendleton-Clemson area. One day in the Fall of 2002, we noticed a new sign on Mechanic Street - Mr. J.D.Smith, Jr. had a "For Lease" sign in front of his Exxon Station! After seeing this sign the concept of Village Station Antiques was born--the task of renovating the station was considerable and we received tremendous support from Mr. Smith. We were "ready" for business in time for Spring Jubilee of 2003."

Connie and Bill Earl fell in love with Pendleton while on sabbatical leave at Clemson. They decided that they would retire here and Connie thought The Square coould use a "country store". Two years later her dream became a reality.

The Mercantile has been described as having a little bit of everything. They started out with handcrafted gifts, candles, gourmet whole coffee beans (will grind to order), old fashioned candies and chocolates, Folkmanis puppets and other "toys without batteries". They now have soybean oil candles made in Pawleys Island plus a large array of Melissa and Doug Toys as well as iron Tavern Puzzles (under $20), 2009 Calendars, and a fine selection of mugs and boxes.

Shortly after opening they added art rubber stamps and Terri began teaching classes in paper arts in 1995. In 1999 Cindy join the family business and they added beads and crystals and beading making supplies. They offer the opportunity for 8 classes a week with no attendance minimum and will place special orders for you. Classes start at $18 and includes supplies. They also offer "a la carte classes" and allow you to pick from their extensive portfolio (24 hour notice required). The first person to reserve the spot picks the class and that is the class that is run.

Stop on by and you will be glad you did.

THE FRAMERY

The Framery is owned by Shirley and Ken Chappell and is open 10 - 3 Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 - 1 on Saturdays.

Ken and Shirley have been on the square for 20 years and felt it was a good location to expand their business in Liberty. They say that they have enjoyed being a part of the community even though they are only open on a part-time basis.

The Framery offers custom picture framing and a variety of prints and framed art. They have a large selection of Jim Booth prints as well as other South Carolina art and decoration prints. They are often complimented on their reasonable prices and their help in choosing color and design.

I can sure vouch for that. I always trust Shirley to tell me what she thinks looks good and that is what I go with. They really do a great job and we are fortunate to have them on the square even if it is part time.

I am proud to say that Karen Link at Pendleton Flower Shop did the flowers for our wedding 30 years ago. She didn't have her own shop back then and everyone was so excited when she decided to open her own shop in Pendleton. Karen says, "In 1989, after working in the flower industry the previous 10 years, my husband and I realized the dream of owning a business in the amazing town we grew up in."

Pendleton Flower Shop has provided floral tributes for the Pendleton Area for many memorable occasions over the years and continues to enjoy serving their valued cutomers. Karen's sister, Kim, has been with her for the entire 19 years.

Debra's husband, Ted, grew up in Pendleton and she loves the small town atmosphere. She has been in business for 18 years and they offer cuts, color, perms,facial wax, and up-dos. Main Street Designs carries Schwarzkopf Osis, Tigi Bed Head and Matrix hair products.

Blue Ridge Antiques and Refinishing is owned by Charlie Moor, Larry Moore, and Jerry Looney. They are in business in Pendleton because they wanted to stay local and where there were plenty of friendly people. They have beautiful antiques and also do a very professional job at refinishing and repairing as well as chair caning.

Ammons Portrait Studio is owned by Greg and Grace Ammons. Greg says that he met his wife, Grace, in Pendleton and fell in love with both Grace and Pendleton at first site. They have been married for 26 years. Greg knew that Pendleton would be a great location for environmental portraits.

Greg is a second generation image maker. His father started photographing school children in 1954. Greg grew up photographing everything around him and took his first professional images in 1980.

Ammons Portrait Studio has been on the historic square in Pendleton for fifteen years and is a full service photographic business specializing in preserving moments and places in people's lives. Greg says that he is now photographing second and third generations of families that started out with him.

His fees start at $99.00 for individuals and $129.00 for families. These sittings can last up to an hour. Thanks to the wonderful members of the Historic Foundation he has the privilege of offering a Fall and Spring Portrait Fundraiser on the grounds of Woodburn and Ashtabula Historic Homes.

Greg and Grace say that "Portraits are a tangible link to our past". They have many clients that bring their old family photographs to be copied and restored. The cost of copies and restoration start at $50.00.

Mountain Made offers handmade crafts with a Mountain Accent. Mountain Made retails pottery, stained glass, turned wood, jewelry, ornaments, birdhouses, speciality food, and quilts that are mostly crafted within 200 miles of Pendleton.

Attached to Mountain Made is a Antique Mini-mall offering 5 booths of nostalgia.

I love to go into Mountain Made and especially like to purchase the scented candles. My last fragrance was Russian Tea.

I asked Von and Linda why they chose Pendleton for their Antique Business.
The McCaskill's said that the town of Pendleton is located in an area of historical importance. Additionally, the Pendleton Historic Commission, The Pendleton Historic Foundation and the residents are active in preservation and appreciation of our Upstate Heritage which provides the perfect setting for antique businesses. The other five antique shops and the houses open for touring are added enticements for out-of-town customers to Stop, Look and Shop!

Past Times is a quality antique shop with one of the largest selections of old Southern Pottery in the nation and at reasonable prices. A diverse selection of other antiques and collectibles, tools, furniture, glassware, kitchen items, linens, jewelry, art pottery, Indian artifacts, lamps, books, records and fishing equipment. Art and Folk Art are also carried.

Lorett says that she is in business in Pendleton because unlike most people, she has had the wonderful opportunity to have a restaurant in a fabulous historic building twice in her life. Once at the Liberty Hall Inn Bed and Breakfast and now at the stately Farmers Hall Building. Lorett likes to say that this building is "Pendleton's Front Porch". When renovations began, The Farmers Society of Pendleton provided her with a blank pallet in this grand old structure and when renovations were complete in June 08, we were able to look back and say "WOW".

Lorett states that she and her husband were totally embraced by this small town and its wonderful residents. "Pendleton is a true diamond in the rough just waiting to reveal its true brilliance. I can only hope that my restaurant will add a small amount of luster to that diamond".

1826 On The Green is a small fine dining restaurant with seating for forty inside and thirty on the front patio (weather permitting). Do not be concerned about the term "fine dining". Our customers receive the epitome of Southern Hospitality. They can choose to dine on low county coastal crab cakes or savor the taste of Bayou Pasta all in casual attire. Split Creek Farm is owned by Evin Evans and Pat Bell. It is open Monday - Saturday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 - 5. They specialize in Farmstead Artisan Goat Cheeses (feta, chevre, fromage blanc), goat milk fudge, and goat milk soap. In addition to their own products, the farm shop carries other South Carolina products and folk art.

All of their products are delicious and they do a wonderful job with gift baskets. Please check out their website to learn more.

The farm was licensed Grade A in 1985 and began producing cheese in 1988. If you haven't been out to Split Creek Farm, you will want to make this your next trip. It is so interesting and a great outing for all ages. We love to go in the spring when the babies are born but it is fun to be out there all year round. The grounds are beautiful and there are a lot of animals to see besides the goats.
Their beautiful and delicious gift baskets make great Christmas Presents.

My grandson's 2nd grade class thoroughly enjoyed a field trip out there last year as you can see by the picture below. They also learned a lot of valuable information.

Liberty Hall Inn and Cafe is owned by Innkeeper Jane Martin and her husband Chef Kevin Martin. The Inn is open year round. The Cafe is open for lunch Tues - Fri 11:30 - 2 and for dinner Thurs - Sat 5:30 - 8:30. Reservations are recommended for the Cafe and required for the Inn.

Jane and Kevin say that they were searching for an Inn for sale on the internet and found Liberty Hall. They researched Pendleton and thought it was charming. Their first visit confirmed this and they were hooked. They also knew that they would fulfill the need for a good quality fine dining restaurant in the area.

Liberty Hall Inn and Cafe is a beautiful Historical Country Inn with 7 gorgeous rooms and a 50 seat fine dining restaurant. The Inn is the epitome in peaceful relaxation with southern charm. The cafe specializes in only the freshest seafood, highest quality meats and seasonal produce available. Their menu changes with the seasons but their regulars would kill them if they ever took the Crab Cakes off the menu.

Granny's Grill was named for Betty's mom who is know by all as "Granny". Granny has worked in cafes for most of her life so Betty decided that if she ever got a cafe of her own, she would name it "Granny's".

Bobby, Shelli and Betty Ann were cleaning day and night to get ready to open the Grill and gradually more and more people would stop by and offer to help. Shelli would make coffee for the workers in an old coffee maker she had and the helpers continued to come. It is for this reason that Betty Ann feels that Granny's Grill doesn't belong to her but to the people of Pendleton and it's employees. She says that it had not been for all the help they received, Granny's Grill would not be what it is today. The employees feel this and look out for it as if it belonged to them.

Granny's is a place that has no boss. No one has to be told their job. They do it and they do it well.

It is a place you can go and feel welcome. We treat everyone as family. We joke and enjoy our customers and it is for sure that their customers enjoy them.

Granny's Grill offers short orders and salads, fish plates, Philly Steak Sandwiches, Cube Steaks, and Rib-eyes. Everything we have is a specialty says Betty Ann. We make our own Slaw, Chili, and our own Homemade Soup and Corn Bread.

Their breakfast menu is wonderful, too. If anyone is looking for me on an early Saturday morning, I will be at Granny's.
