HAPPENINGS AROUND PENDLETON SC

This lens is intended to keep you informed of events and other news about Pendleton SC. We are a small historic town nestled in the foothills of upstate SC. Even though we are a small community, we have a lot going on as you can see by the listings. I hope that everyone will feel free to let me know of their event or news so I can add it to the list.
Note: I am just a community volunteer and do not work for the town of Pendleton. This is just something that I do on my own. If you need more information about an event, please call the number listed for that event. I just post what I am given. Thank you.

Pendleton Boy Scout Troop 94 Need Leaders

Can you help?

How can you help develop our future leaders?

There are many different roles a leader can fulfill depending on the type of unit. Positions are usually voluntary and are often divided between 'uniform' and 'support' roles

Uniformed Scout Leaders are primarily responsible for organizing the activities of the group, and training the youth members through the Scout program. Other roles include liaison with parents, districts, or other parties such as the unit's sponsoring organization.

Some support roles are not always termed Scout Leaders; although they may assist with activities and training, they do not always hold a formal position and may not have received training. Beyond the Scout program, these supporters may take responsibility for administrative tasks such as budgets, managing properties, recruitment, equipment, transport, and many other roles.

Anyone interested can contact me Jennifer Hellams, Troop 94 Committee Chair at Troop94@charter.net. You must be at least 18 years old and would need to fill out an Adult Registration Application. Everyone that is registered with Scouts will have a background check done by the Blue Ridge Council.

Palmetto Bank Raises Money For Pendleton Community Center

Palmetto Bank has always been an important part of the Pendleton so it was no surprise when they wanted to do something to help the Pendleton Community Center after their the recent vandalism. Debbie Sloan of Palmetto Bank organized a "Used Book Sale" and with the help of all of the bank employees, they were able to raise $530 for the center. Debbie Sloan said that the Pendleton residents as well as others were very generous with donating their used books and they had no problems selling them in the bank and at Spring Jubilee.

On April 21, 2009 Debbie Sloan of Palmetto Bank presented Denise Jackson of Pendleton Community Center with a check in the amount of $530. Denise was very appreciative of the donation and efforts of Palmetto Bank and said that this money would be used to buy paint and painting supplies for the center. Denise said that they would begin the painting soon. According to Denise, they will eventually need to replace the carpet that was also vandalized.

Further donations to the Pendleton Community Center may be mailed to The Pendleton Community Center, Inc. 305 West Queen Street PO Box 427 Pendleton SC 29670.

Timeless Tours & Travel - Upcoming Trips

Please Read this letter from Jean Vegod about some Day Trips coming up!

Website: Timeless Tours & Travel LLC

Hi, Everyone!

Well, the wedding is behind us, and it was beautiful! The weather, the young bridesmaids, the bride were all lovely. I have finally caught up on my sleep and have begun to relax!

Now for the travel. On June 25th we are going to Flat Rock to see "Man of La Mancha." We will have lunch prior to the show at Sinbad (one of our favorites). The cost of the trip is $80 and includes all the usual things, even the chocolate and the fun! We have a few seats left for this trip and hope you can go with us!

I have great orchestra seats for the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes at the Fox Theatre for Dec. 5th and am very excited about both the show and our luncheon venue. We will be eating at the elegant Georgian Terrace across the street from the theater. It has been recently rennovated and should be fabulous! I always love the show, no matter how many times I see it! They always change it a little to freshen it up a bit, and the scene at the end always makes me teary! We are asking for a deposit for this show because it is a bit "pricey," and I have already paid for the tickets. The cost for the trip is $129. If you would like to go with us, a $65 deposit will be due June 1st, with the balance due Nov. 2nd. I think this will be fun and will get us all revved up for the holidays!

I am also working on a trip for next year to Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria, culminating in the Passion Play in Oberammergau. This play only occurs every ten years, as you probably know, and 2010 is the time for it. If you think you might be interested in going, I have brochures that will give you all the details and would be happy to get it to you.

Hope you are all well and hope to see you soon!

Also I enjoyed seeing the beautiful paintings on exhibit by Lori Solymosi and wonderful photographs by Johanna Fuller on the other side.

Martha Seawright - Hometown Hero

Upstate Today.com October 9, 2008

Martha Seawright was named Pilot International Foundation Sweetheart for 2008-2009 by the Pilot Club of Seneca. The Pilot International Foundation was established in 1975 to support the community-based work of Pilot Clubs by promoting awareness and prevention of brain-related disorders and improving the lives of those affected by such disorders through education, volunteerism, financial support and research.

Each year Pilot Clubs around the world honor one of their own as a volunteer that embodies the work of Pilot International. Seawright has been a Pilot International member for over 50 years and a member of the Pilot Club of Seneca since 1983. She served as president in Seneca 1985-86, 1986-87 and 1996-97 and as treasurer from 1999-2005. She also served as S.C. district governor in 1995-96.

Seawright is very active in her community as well. She works with Meals on Wheels in Anderson County scheduling drivers, finding substitute drivers, locating people who are applying for meals and even driving a 25-mile route herself two days a month serving 20 to 25 people.

The Pilot Club of Seneca held a luncheon for Seawright at Liberty Hall Inn in Pendleton in September to present her with her award. The Club also made a $25 donation to Pilot International Foundation in her honor.

Thank you Clemson University Students for all your great help with Fall Festival!

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
by Joseph Robinette
based upon the novel by C.S. Lewis
directed by Anne Cash
March 6, 7, 8 & 13, 14, 15, 2009
This CAYT dramatization of C.S. Lewis' classic recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch, and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the exciting, unforgettable Narnia. This story of love, faith, courage, and giving is a true celebration of life. A treat to be shared with the young of all ages.

Sugar Bean Sisters
by Nathan Sanders
directed by Jimmy Burdette
April 24, 25, 26 & May 1, 2, 3, 2009
The Nettle sisters are determined to escape spinsterhood-Willie Mae by going to Salt Lake and finding a good Mormon husband and Faye by hopping on the spaceship when the "space people" return for another visit. Having witnessed the landing of an alien space craft some 25 years ago in her daddy's sugarcane field, Faye prepares for the return of her celestial visitors on this night, the very anniversary of that fateful day. A strange bird -like woman suddenly appears out of the darkness of Buster Swamp, setting in motion a chain of extraordinary events. Lies begin to unravel and the truth is revealed as the Sugar Bean Sisters hatch a diabolical plot to ensure the space people's return. A true Southern Gothic comedy "full of sparkling hot one-liners", The Sugar Bean Sisters is an offbeat story of romance, murder, and alien abduction!

The Nerd
by Larry Shue
directed by Pat Shull
July 31 & August 1, 2 & 7, 8, 9, 2009
Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life in Vietnam. Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"-a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence, and less tact. Rick stays on and on, his continued presence leading to one uproarious incident after another- causing poor Willum to contemplate violence!

I feel like I just visited Pendleton in person ! What a great lens and a great way to present it. I've only been to Charleston (Kiawah Island) for a few days vacation so don't know much else about the state of SC. The videos really do show what a great town you have there. I will lensroll yours with my Boy Scout lens. Greetings to Pack 94 & Troop 94 from Pack 4 & Troop 4 in Logan Township NJ ! Hello, OhMe. I'm now in NY State on my 4th family visit of my month-long trip throughout the midwest and east coast. So pleased to have this Pendleton Happenings lens to keep track of what is going on at home. I'm enjoying my visits, but beginning to get homesick for Pendleton, so appreciate being able to 'look in' now and then. Thanks for continuing to update this informative and interesting lens.

I was fascinated looking at all the things that go on in Pendleton seeing as I am fairly new here. I am originally from Manchester Connecticut where we had the Cheney Mills.....I also found out that Cheney Mills was on Cherry Street....can anyone give me some information, photos, materials.....my town's historical society would be very interested in these things.. thanks for your help..
