Juried Arts and Crafts Festival

Just as the dogwoods begin to show their buds, the small historic town of Pendleton, South Carolina begins to get busy preparing for Spring Jubilee. It is as if the town has awakened from a long winter's nap.

The Village Green is manicured and fertilized to assure its pretty green color. The new Pendleton Garden Club works hard preparing the Masonic Court Yard. The Pendleton Area Business Association replants the planters around the square with new spring flowers. The merchants are busy washing their windows and decorating them.

Everyone has one thing on their mind and that is to get our beautiful town ready for the largest event of the year: Spring Jubilee!

Spring Jubilee 09 was a huge success with gorgeous weather, a great crowd, very talented Artisans, fantastic entertainment and delicious food. We appreciate everyone who participated in this event. Mark your calendar for April 3 and 4, 2010.

A Message From Our Mayor

On behalf of all Pendletonians, I'd like to invite you to join in all the fun and festivities of Spring Jubilee. Pendleton takes great pride in hosting thousands of guests who come to town the first weekend in April to buy arts and crafts, to eat delicious food, to hear great entertainment and shop all around downtown. It is also an opportunity to become acquainted with Pendleton's history. Pendleton was founded in 1790!!

Our many thanks to Jo McConnell, the Pendleton District Commission and all those in Pendleton who will be preparing for your arrival on April 4th and 5th.

See you then, Carol the Mayor

What Is Spring Jubilee

Spring Jubilee is a juried Arts and Crafts Festival held in historic Pendleton SC on the first weekend in April. There are usually approximately 90 vendors at this festival which draws a crowd of over 20,000 visitors to our little town.

Spring Jubilee is one of the events sponsored by Pendleton District Commission which represents the tri-counties of Pickens, Anderson and Oconee. Pendleton District Commission has always been housed at the Old Hunters Store on the square but this building is currently being renovated.

Jo McConnell, the Tours/Events Coordinator for Pendleton District Commission, presently has her office in the old Guard House on our beautiful Village Green. Vicki Fletcher, Executive Director of Pendleton District Commission and Betsy Johnson, Curator of Collections, are both presently located in the Agricultural Museum on History Lane on the way to Wooburn Historic Home.

Jo McConnell says: "The Historic Pendleton Spring Jubilee has earned respect through the last thirty years by being twice named the BEST FESTIVAL IN SOUTH CAROLINA IN A COMMUNITY OF LESS THAN 3000, a TOP 100 EVENT by the American Bus Association and multi-winner of the TOP TWENTY EVENTS IN THE SOUTHEAST by the Southeast Tourism Society. Come and be part of an award-winning day in a beautiful historic setting."

Does Spring Jubilee Offer Any Entertainment?

Oh yes, Jo books some wonderful entertainment to include singers, dancers, musicians, and more. In the past when the high school students are here from our Sister City of Stornoway Scotland, they perform Scottish Dances for us. Unfortunately, the Scottish students were not able to make the trip this year. Some of the local church choirs have performed as well as the school choruses. Banjo Players, Bands, and even an Elvis Impersonator have been on the stage. Jack Roper's Magic and Cravin' Melon acoustics are a big hit.

Jo McConnell Talks About Spring Jubilee

Jo McConnell answers a lot of questions about Spring Jubilee. Spring Jubilee is her responsibility and she takes that responsibility very seriously. She brings only the most talented crafters and artists, food vendors, and entertainment to make this festival a huge success.
powered by Youtube

How Does One Qualify for Spring Jubilee

According to Jo McConnell, all applications from artist and crafters must be in by February 1 before Jubilee. "They have to submit photographs of their handmade items with the application and then it is voted on by a committee". Your application does not guarantee a space in the show. You'll find the the rules and guidelines of the show in the vendor application. According to the Pendleton District Commission's Website, "over 300 artisans vie for the coveted 90 spaces."

What Is There To Eat At Spring Jubilee?

Yummy!!

Lots and lots to eat!

Jo does not allow more than one vendor to sell the same items so there is a very large variety of great food.

Have you ever had a Funnel Cake? Well, Hevy Mann makes the best. His Fresh Squeezed Lemonade is also great.

Old Fashioned Ice Cream, Barbecue, Hamburgers, and more. I haven't seen the list for this year but there is always lots to choose from.

Also, please check out our local restaurants.
1826 On The Green is housed in Farmers Hall which is right on the Village Green. Award Winning Chef, Lorett Hayes, will prepare a meal that you will remember in an atmosphere that you can't forget!
The Islander Pub and Grille located on Exchange Street is a great place to relax and meet your friends in between your shopping at the festival.
Pendleton Cafe and Coffee Co on Main Street will be serving over the weekend also and it is always delicious.
Village Baker not only has fresh made breads and deserts but also lunch items.
Granny's Grill is off the square on Greenville Street and offers a fantastic Southern Breakfast and Lunch.
Sam's Diner is also off the square but not too far and a great place for Pizza.

These are just a few of our restaurants. Please take time to visit them and to visit our shops in and around town. Thank you.

Jubilee Joy Ride 09

by Jo McConnell

The Jubilee Joy Ride returns for the 19th year to offer carefully planned loops that will take you onto some of the most beautiful roads in Anderson County on Saturday, April 4. Registration is from 8- 10 a.m.. The ride begins at the Pendleton District Agricultural Museum, located on History Lane off Hwy. 76, across from Tri-County Technical College. The 28-mile loop explores the quiet country roads of Anderson and La France. The metric century (62.5miles) route starts on the 28-mile loop and adds another 35 miles which takes the riders into the rolling hills of northern Anderson County. Rest stops with snacks and refreshments will be available on all the routes. There is no mass start and it is held rain or shine. Minors must be accompanied by an adult and helmets are required. Early registration is not required, but is recommended and guarantees a t-shirt. Call 864-646-3782 or email vicki@pendletondistrict.org for information or application.

I understand that there were about 89 riders participating in the Jubilee Joy Ride in 2009. Isn't that fantastic?

Two New Activites: "Scrap Exchange" and "Make It and Take It"

written by Jo McConnell

Green isn't just the color of the grass where the Jubilee is held. It is the symbol for our responsibility to protect our environment by recycling and the Jubilee is going to make it fun. The Town of Pendleton's Curbside Recycling Program and Anderson County's Keep America Beautiful program is sponsoring THE SCRAP EXCHANGE, a non-profit creative reuse center that promotes creativity, environmental awareness and community through reuse of industrial discards and reclaimed materials. People of all ages will have a great time making hats, rockets, puppets, handbags or any number of items under the supervision of The Scrap Exchange. It's creative, it's responsible and it's FREE!! Plan to come and join the fun from 10 am - 4 pm on Saturday, April 4. On Sunday, April 5, the Blue Ridge Arts Center will have their "MAKE IT AND TAKE IT" booth with four interactive hands-on art activities for kids ages 4-12 to create a work of art to take home. Both activities are free of charge and waiting for the creative juices to flow. Who knows, a future artist/crafter for Spring Jubilee may be found at these fun activities.

I dedicate this lens to Jo McConnell with admiration and appreciation for all she does for the town of Pendleton South Carolina

"Jo McConnell had this to say on this lens - January 28, 2009"

Isn't Spring Jubilee blessed to have residents like OhMe and Sittonbull who share their enthusiasm for their home town event!!! Thanks for OhMe's hard work to put this informative lens on Squidoo. I just hope she doesn't send me a bill because it would cost a pretty penny. They are typical of all the residents of Pendleton who embrace Spring Jubilee and earn us rave reviews from the artists/crafters as the friendliest festival in South Carolina. We even have residents who arrive early to help the participants unpack - of course, that gives them first choice on purchases as they pick their favorite as they unpack. The Village Green is a beautiful setting and the surrounding businesses and restaurants welcome the visitors. Our goal is to bring people into the area for this special weekend so they'll come again during other parts of the year to enjoy our history, shopping, dining and friendly people. The dogwood blossoms are beautiful, but so our our fall leaves. More later. Jo
