2. The male penguin stays with the eggs while the female goes to sea to hunt.

3. Even though they look awkward, and have short legs, penguins can walk as fast, or faster than most people.

5. Penguins can hold their breath under water for up to 20 minutes, allowing them to dive down and find food.

6. Penguins only live in the Southern hemisphere (no penguins at the North Pole)

7. Penguins have more feathers per square inch than any other bird (this helps keep them warm in frigid waters)

More Great Facts About Penguins

Penguin Chicks

Baby penguins are born with soft feathers called down. The young Penguins count on their parents for food and survival, until they grow their juvenile feathers. The juvenile feathers are waterproof, and they can begin to enter the water and learn to find their own food.

Southern Gentleman, or Crafty Camouflage?

The penguins beautiful tuxedo pattern has a very important purpose. Penguins are counter-shaded for camouflage. What does this mean? They are white on the bottom, because anything looking up at them from beneath in the ocean will not see them. They blend into the white shimmer the sunlight casts on the water. They're backs are black, any animal looking down at them from above in the water will only see the dark depths of the ocean.

What Do Penguins Eat?
Penguins eat fish, squid, or krill. Their diet varies by season, by location, and species.
