I thought I'd put together some of the ideas we used to create a penguin winter wonderland party theme, and share a few ideas for party; supplies, games, and of course the cake!
How To Make a Penguin Winter Wonderland Birthday Cake
This penguin birthday cake is super simple!
Before you start, preheat your oven and be sure to cover the inside, bottoms of your cake pans with parchment paper and spray the inside bottom and sides with cooking spray. This will allow your cakes to easily release from the pans and give you a nice smooth surface to decorate.
Family Tradition:
I made the smaller cake for a tradition we have in our family. On our childrens' first birthdays they get a whole cake to delve in to themselves. Of course, none of them have ever eaten a whole lot of it, but it is fun to watch them tear it up. It's usually their very first taste of cake.
Ingredients
- 5-6 cake mixes
- Two batches of Mama's Buttercream Decorator's Icing
- Royal Blue Wilton Icing Color
- Cake Sparkles (this is big edible glitter for cake!) in White and Royal Blue
- Oval cake pans sizes 10 3/4 x 7 1/8 and 16 1/2 x12 3/8
- 2 coverer cake boards
- one oval one rectangle
- Angled cake decorating spatula
- Small plastic Polar or Arctic animals
Instructions
Bake cakes in oval cake pans (2-10 3/4 x 7 1/8 & 1-16 1/2 x12 3/8), allow to cool. Remove cakes from pans and cut off tops with a cake knife or a long serrated knife.
Place cakes, top-down, on your covered cake boards. Place the large oval cake on the large rectangle covered cake board. Then, position one small oval cake, top-side, down on top of the large oval cake, off to one side. Place the other small oval cake top-down, on the small oval covered cake board.
Ice cakes with 'Mama's Buttercream Decorator's Icing' (recipe below) While the icing is still wet, use the back of your angled cake decorating spatula to touch the surface of the icing, then pull up quickly, all over the cakes. I even did this on the cake board for a more wintry feel. This gives the look of small snow piles.
Hollow out a small area on top of the large cake (opposite of the small oval cake), for the pond. Make the bottom of the pond smooth, form a ridge around the top, then put a small amount of decorator's icing (dyed royal blue) in the bottom.
Place animals, where you want them, on the cakes.
Sprinkle entire cake (both) with White Cake Sparkles. Sprinkle inside of pond with Royal Blue Cake Sparkles.
Simple as that!

Mama's Buttercream Decorator's Icing
I have used this recipe for years and have always had excellent results.
I use pure vanilla extract but Wilton makes a clear vanilla extract that makes whiter buttercream icing.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter refrigerated and slightly softened
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups pure cane powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons milk
Instructions
Cream the butter and shortening together until well combined. Add the vanilla and salt.
Beat in the powdered sugar one cup at a time; be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl after each addition.
Add milk one tablespoon at a time, beating at high speed until light and fluffy.
This recipe makes 3 cups.
Tips:
For best results, do not double recipe, make one batch at a time.
Keep icing covered when not using. I use a damp paper towel as a cover to keep the icing from drying out.
Refrigerate unused icing for future use, bring to room temperature before use.
