Penguin, Tuxedo and Nun Costumes

Upon reading about the Penguin's bill, I researched online to find if there was a difference between the terms, bill and beak.

There are several answers, some that sound reasonable. A Wikipedia explanation is correct but I wanted to know more: "Although the word 'beak' was, in the past, generally restricted to the sharpened bills of birds of prey, in modern ornithology, the terms beak and bill are generally considered to be synonymous."

I found this answer in more than one place and am unsure of its origin: "There is little difference between the two terms when applied to birds. The term beak can refer to a wide range of other animals, not just birds, including turtles, some insects, some fish, a few mammals, as well as cephalopods. It can also be applied to many dinosaurs too.

"However the term bill is normally only applied to the beak of a bird or platypus. This is especially used when the beak is slender, flattened or weak, or belongs to a web-footed bird or a bird of the pigeon family."

Finally, I found this:

"A bill is used for catching things. Wading birds catch fish with their bills, cardinals catch seeds and berries with their bills, and flycatchers catch insects with their bills.

"A beak is used for tearing things apart. Hawks and owls catch with their talons and tear the prey apart with their beaks, and vultures tear apart carrion with their beaks." -- excerpted from the Collier County Audubon Society, Naples, FL
