A Fascinating Animal Unit Study

The penguin makes a great unit study and topic for an animal lapbook. There is the biology involved in the study of the animal itself. You can also add the earth science and geography of the penguin's habitat. Then there are great living books about penguins as well as crafts to make. Explore this lens for your own DIY penguin unit study and lapbook. You will find books to read, free printables, shape books, coloring pages, and activity ideas all about penguins.

These photos are from my daughter's penguin lapbook which she did as a supplement after reading Mr. Popper's Penguins (as part of Sonlight Core 1). It was one of the first lapbooks we ever did.

We made it totally from free resources online. As you can see, it's very simple. Don't be intimidated by the photos of others' lapbooks. Just jump in there and create your own! You will get more and more proficient as you make more and more. And as your children mature, you can become more complex with your mini-books and their content.

SeaWorld Teacher Guides: Sea World offers two brilliant PDF teacher's guides. One is for grades K-3, the other for 4-8. These free downloads have not only facts and data but also reproducible maps, flashcards, charts, and images. This is an excellent resource you do not want to miss! It can serve as the foundation of your penguin study without your buying a single thing.
New England Aquarium: Questions and answers all about penguins. There are some fascinating facts here!

ABC Teach: A free PDF penguin shape template.
A to Z Teacher Stuff: Look for three types of penguin shape books here -- a cover, lined paper, and blank paper with an outline. Print as many pages as you desire and staple them together.
Write on Shapes -- Penguin: A stylized penguin with lines on his torso for writing.
Kid Zone Penguin Template: This site offers three versions of penguin templates --a title page, lined paper, and picture (blank) paper.

A Great Novel to Start Your Penguin Study

Mr. Popper's Penguins

This is the book that inspired our penguin study. It is a classic title of juvenile fiction that every child should read (or have read to him). The penguins of this novel are Adelie penguins.

Be sure to download Mr. Popper's Penguins Minibooks. These are free templates about penguins, especially to go along with the classic novel Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Maps of Penguin Habitats

Penguins live in the Southern Hemisphere, many in Antarctica. Be sure to include a map in your lapbook.

EduPlace Southern Hemisphere: This PDF has a great map of the Southern Hemisphere complete with continents labeled and latitude/longitude lines.
Penguin Pals: This lesson plan PDF is meant to help you plan a trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo. There is a list of vocabulary words related to penguins and a mapping activity that could be used in your lapbook.
Penguins of the World: A color map with penguin habitats marked in red. This map is interactive and will take you to more information about various penguin species.

Penguin Early Readers

I love it when I can tie in all the subjects into a unit study. If your child is an early reader, add in some of these penguin readers to continue the theme into your language arts.

Coloring pages can be so much more than "just" coloring pages. Use the images to create your own minibooks, jigsaw puzzles, or flashcards.

National Geographic: This coloring page is excellent -- not only does it have an emperor penguin family but there is a detail inset of an the penguin's feet cradling the egg.

Try some of these step by step directions for drawing a penguin! Print out the icy scenery or these icebergs as backgrounds for your drawings.

Papercraft Penguin Models

These papercraft penguin models are a bit difficult, so save them for your older children or do them alongside for a family activity.

Penguins!!! Oooooh I ADORE penguins! I did a stint working at an animal centre for rescuing creatures who had been brought here and sold as pets! They are beautiful creatures!

Thanks so much for this great resource! My 4 year old daughter suddenly has a great interest in penguins, and I was looking for a way to incorporate this into our homeschool lessons. I have printed several items from your list for us to work on together.
