The Eternal Battle...

It seems as though the eternal battle in the family dwelling is not between siblings or spouses, but rather between Design & Functionality. How nice it wuold be if we could live in the photo...the perfectly situated books on the end table...the light cascading evenly from multiple sources...the throw pillows never looking like they have actually been "thrown". We all desire a space to be visually appealing, but at what cost?

Can a Minimalistic dwelling be adequate for 4 children who own every Spongebob Squarepants toy on the market? Can a French Country kitchen provide the space needed for a master chef moving through his/her space like a whirlwind? Where does style confront substance and is there a point where the two of them unite to face the challenges of the home?

The solution...

Moderation - Anything, including design, can be deadly if not taken in moderation. If you love cupcakes, go ahead and eat one...maybe two...pushing it on three. Twenty or thirty though, and you will most likely end up flat on your back on a gurney (en route to the hospital) or doubled over in pain in the restroom!

Balance - The rolling meadows in all their beautiful glory, do not impress us with just the colors and textures that they provide, but also the life and interaction that they support. We want to see the butterflies dancing around the flowers...we want to hear the birds singing their songs...we want to smell the sweet nectar of the wildflowers that seems to make the bees go crazy!

No one can live in a picture. Though it may look beautiful, much more is needed to support human interaction and all the complexities of modern day life. The marrying of Form & Function can be accomplished through the implementation of Moderation & Balance. It is not easy, but it is well worth the effort!

Create Great Outdoor Spaces !!!

3 Essentials to Creating a Great Outdoor Space.

What makes a great outdoor space? Is it the furniture, the flora or the accessories? Is it the location or the size? Or is it something a bit more intangible...something possibly unrecognizable!

Great outdoor spaces are not defined by what is purchased, but rather by what is felt. How does a certain place affect you? Were you prepared for it? Did it invite you in or are you feeling a bit unwelcome? Are you certain of its purpose...of what you are to do while you are there?

Here are a few ideas to help you in your designs of inviting spaces that are just as desirable as they are practical.

Transition -
A progression of change helps build anticipation as well as expectation, while preparing an individual for what is to come. Create subtle entries that are not abrupt but rather smooth and gradual. Things like rows of bushes or flowers leading to a conclusive space can allow a person to acclimate before arrival.

Separation -
Separation of space is integral to the overall creation of well-designed areas. Avoid using walls and doors whenever possible in outdoor design. Try other means of separation, such as trees, bushes, rocks or creeks. Something as simple as ground cover changes can make a definitive statement when it comes to spatial separation.

Definition -
Why am I here? This question should be answered at the transition stage, before an individual even arrives at an intended space. What is the purpose of this design? Is it purely a visual refuge that is not intended to be entered? Does it have a large entry welcoming everyone into its graces? A clearly defined purpose allows focus and clarity in design, making a space as practical as it is beautiful.

There is nothing more enticing than a well-designed outdoor space. Hopefully, these 3 essentials will help you on your way to creating a purposeful outdoor escape that will provide exactly what you desire. Good Luck!
