My friend and I co-authored a western (now hunting for an agent). Since we are both female we came up with a male pen name based on our last names. Our pen name is Richard Bonham Waters.

I'm getting married but keeping my pen name as Erica Stanciu. I feel like it's a unique name that will catch people's attention. The last name at least. I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at my lens. It's about a new, self-published novel. If not I completely understand. Have a great 2012.

When choosing a pen name search thoroughly to see if that name doesn't already belong to someone else. At least, not to someone that already gets a lot of exposure in Google.
  • ProductOfAWanderingMind Oct 2, 2011 @ 6:32 pm | delete
I have several, but for the purpose of erotic fiction, which I have started writing fairly recently, I write simply as 'T.F.'. Something I find interesting about using a pen name is that it can feel like assuming an alter ego at times, you can step into this 'character' that you're creating and write (or do whatever other activity it might be) with a different kind of attitude and confidence. In this way it can be strangely empowering, both because of the sense of 'safety' it affords, but also because of that strange, child like joy of becoming someone else for a while, playing another role.
Sorry I ramble somewhat, so I shall finish here. But I will say, what a great lens, very interesting; informative; and even inspiring.
    Regards,
    -TF

I really love all you've said about pen names because I've been worried about using one. I'm a fourteen-year-old author wanna-be. I come from a small town in Mississippi of all places... I'm not going to post my chosen pen name because I don't trust those who are still trying to find their own, but thank you just the same. I wish you luck with your writing!

Great lens! I use a penname to keep my fiction writing seperate from non-fiction written for work. With SEO as a concern I think more authors are doing this now, particularly when they write in very diferent genres.
  • Mjp Jul 4, 2011 @ 7:06 am | delete
Tell me what you think!!!! I will change my first name to a gender neutral name or use my initials (MJ Preciado) because I don't want the fact that I'm a woman to hinder this whole shabang. Also, Preciado can be hard to remember/spell. Plus I do not want to be passed over for being of Mexican decent no matter how much I love my name.

  • Jess Bennett May 13, 2011 @ 8:47 pm | delete
i've used Annabelle Snow, the name of one of my first horses I trained and full name of characters, but because it was a character name, i had to nix it once I started writing outside of friends online and stuff. So, then I thought maybe i should try gender neutral, but I couldn't remember what my name was and that was bad. So, I came up with Jess Bennett. I used it for a creative writing assignment in school (as a character name) since the character had to male, but had to be "us". It's really quite dumb, but I got Bennett from this old show Charmed- the main character's change their name at one point to it. ANYWAY, it's also at the beginning of the alphabet, gender neutral and I recognize my name if people refrence or talk to me online. Bennett could be trouble as far as spelling, but, i'll deal with it when I get there. I like it, and I love that it uses my nickname while being masculine at the same time :) Personally, I think it's a bad idea to use anything someone may have trouble remembering how to spell or sounds too much like it could be a Marvel character...

  • Kalen Bloodstone/Aiden Fletcher . . . Feb 8, 2011 @ 8:50 pm | delete
Currently, I'm at the crossroads of Kalen Bloodstone or Aiden Fletcher, both have an Irish accent and roll of the tongue. Bloodstone was a hard one to pair, as it is more late 18th century new 19th century, or at least as I've been told. It couldn't be mixed with something such as Cameron or any newer sounding name such as Jaydan or- say Leo, which wouldn't correspond with an English sounding surname. It took forever to find the right combination for Aiden, but it seems to me that it will work, either way, I took a shot at it. Hope you guys find one, and please don't steal mine! (said with an authoritative, or at least tried to, voice)

Harry Besharet. The last name is the Hebrew word for 'fate,' or 'Kismet.' The first name is the name of my most wonderful dog, whose ashes are on the window sill. I've used it often, even creating some problems when I published a couple of newspapers. Another one is Alysa Craig, which is actually a stony outcropping in the Firth of Forth.

It's the name i chose for the main character but oh well. I like it because i love the name Kira and Kira and Grace sound good together (minus the meaning of Kira) and because It's short and easy to remember, and english(ish) un like my last Pen name Aisu Houou.

I was thinking of using the pen name Michael P Roman, or simply MP Roman. My initials are MRP, and I wanted to use the same letters, my last name is italian and just sounds silly as an author's name. Also, a lot of people can't spell it correctly. My first name is Michael so I wanted to keep that as its easy to remember. Also I am really into Classical Rome and the history of the Roman Empire, so I am very much leaning towards using the name Roman, either as a first or last name. So I think it works well.
  • Elle Flynn Apr 11, 2010 @ 2:31 pm | delete
    My pen name is Elle Flynn. Elle has the same amount of letters as my real first name, and Flynn has the same amount of letters as my real last name. I write alot on the internet, and I'm best known by my readers as this name. I chose it because I feel like I'm two different people, sort of. There's the me that dreams and writes fantasy, romance, and other fictional works. And then there's the other me that lives outside of her computer.(;

  • D.B. Dean Feb 19, 2010 @ 1:12 pm | delete
    I just choose mine.

D.B. Dean (its actually my first two initals and my last name)...chosen cause my first name while weird and easy to remember is...to me to personal to put out there.

Also chosen because when doing a google search on it I got a lot of Dean Kuntz returns which is great because if I get published people looking for his books will find mine (which are in a similar genre)...and it puts it in the middle level on a book shelf, easily scene by browsing buyers.

  • marta/Viola Dec 1, 2009 @ 5:05 pm | delete
My pen name is Viola, but my real name is marta.
The history of my pen name is that i once created a character in an online role playing game, her name was Violet, but by others the character was called Viola. I started to really like this name and now i am publiching my poems in internet under name of Viola. And also, i didn't want others to know what kind of poems i wrote, becuse most of them are very depressing, but thats just how i put my feelings out.. But i wounder if that is ok to not have a last name for a pen name. Cuz mine is just "Viola"..?

As you can see, my last name is Beers (not a lie). I don't know if that will work for the type of books I write (Fantasy and Children's'). I mean seriously, would a parent buy a book for their child if the author's name is Beers?

I'm actually trying to decide on a pen name. I write a lot of local news articles for a website in the town where I grew up. I want to use a pen for two reasons. Knowing the history and majority of people in this town I think my articles would recieve more traffic if the author name was male. In addition to that I do spend a lot of time in this town. I don't want to be taking my mother or grandma-in-law to the grocery and have to stop 30 times to answer questions about my articles. I'd much rather filter those questions through an email or blog only response.
    Nice Lens! 5 stars

Try JULIANNE JASKI. Three beats in the first name, two in the second. the double J has a good sound. Plus, it keeps a part of your surname, so your family won't object.

Stephan Sabre, though I use about all versions of my real name, Aric James, James Enrique, Rik Keys, Rick Keith (I don't use that one much because then I would be Rickey Keith the second and my son would be Rickey Keith the third) and I have even used my initials Jak Keith. Or I have used several of my characters names for some of my past accounts, Reighliegh Anders, Monica Chandler, Forrest Chandler, Gregori Exandrov...
And then I have "thought" of using my Scottish heritage and pulling in the names of serfs that my family protected....

I roleplayed alot and eventually decided to take one of the character's I rped and turn them into a character for one of my novels I am writing on. The best thing, its neutral so no one can tell if I am male or female, so no one can judge my writing by my name and gender.
