Penny auctions on the online alternative auction sites
Everyone needs a bargain these days so, following a suggestion from Sunray at Pheebay.com, a number of the smaller alternative auction sites got together for a joint promotion which Pheebay and its members publicised to the best of our ability.
It makes a great deal of sense for smaller sites to link together, if a visitor can't find what they want on one site they will, hopefully, check out the others, everyone benefits.
Read Rainbowseeker's blog about the Penny Auctions promotion.
One penny auctions - the chance to pick up a bargain or get something for next to nothing - are happening on the smaller auction sites and details of current auctions (all are designed to finish on a Sunday) will be published here amongst other places.
Unfortunately, it proved to be too difficult to get enough new users to join alternative auction sites and, although there were some very successful auctions, overall the results from this experiment have been patchy. We will continue to look for new ways to help promote the smaller, and frequently friendlier, auction venues at Pheebay.com.
I have left the rest of this lens with the info carried for the promotion. Even if someone else gets some ideas from it, it will be worthwhile. If you try running penny auctions for yourself, you'll find promotion is key to success.

King George VI Stamps, Coronation Collectables
King George VI Stamps
Coronation Collectables, Royalty, Royal Family Collectibles, Rare Stamps
Auction ended July 15thKing George VI Stamps from a Pheebay member, listed at a 1c start on eBay sold for a darned good price.
I'm publicising this particularly interesting mint set, a Coronation memorabilia item, as there seem to be no takers for the penny auction promotion currently.
He was born into the House of Windsor as Albert Frederick Arthur George the younger brother of the man who would ascend to the throne as Edward VIII on the death of their father in 1936. However, less than a year later Edward revealed his desire to marry the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson.
The auction is already taking off for this exquisite set which shows all the trappings of State.

The Imperial State Crown

Tannu Tuva Stamp (greatly enlarged)
Tannu Tuva ... where is that?
Auction ended July 16thTannu Tuva is a small country with some interesting history.
This is another penny start, no reserve auction by the same seller as the stamp auction mentioned above.
Offered here is the Tannu Tuva 1935 Zoological Set within a pamphlet.
Visit the auction to read more about the history of this part of the Qing Empire and view these beautiful stamps.

Dodgers v Giants Tickets 1973
LA Dodgers v SF Giants 1973 tickets.
Auction ended July 21stLA Dodgers v SF Giants tickets for the 28th July game. Both original and authentic COMPLETE tickets. Both are in excellent condition.
Auction starts at ONE CENT for these TWO complete tickets.
Now, I don't know much about the Dodgers or the Giants, but that has to be a bargain ... and it's even postage free!
I have to say that this is also a seller I would totally trust, their reputation on the net is second to none. This is your chance to get a genuine memento of what, I'm sure, was a memorable game from more than 35 years ago.
The seller has also put some interesting snippets of the history of the rivalry between these teams on the auction page, so I know more now about them than I did before.
The Event
... organised in the Pheebay.com forums
Rainbowseeker's blog - Digg - Dropjack - AuctionBugle - Digg Penny Auctions
The 'rules' have evolved to be more flexible
... any seller on a small auction site can join in.
2) Start Bid must be 1c or 1p
3) Only auctions (no fixed price or buy now option)
4) Duration to be 7, 10 or 14 days - but must end on a Sunday (list on a Thursday for 10days to have it end on a Sunday).
5) No "adult" type items
If we find it necessary to adjust these simple rules we will do so.
Pheebay will promote the auctions but, of course, we are happy for others to take a hand in promotion by blogging about the auctions and how to find them, remember, this will benefit the site on which you sell through increased traffic and - with attractive auctions - new members, try to get your site owner(s) involved in the promotion. If they get involved they'll get more free publicity out of it as well as others blog about their inclusion.
A Call to Sellers on eBay Alternative Auction Sites
... to plan ahead
The initial period of five weeks during which we have run these penny start auctions across a range of eBay alternative auction sites, the feedback has been positive from the participating sellers. We are pleased with the increase in views and in items sold and many of the eBay alternative auction sites have enjoyed a boost to their membership.
As a participating seller myself, I have found an overall increase in traffic to my listings and, most satisfyingly, a number of sales to brand new customers on the site
After discussion in the General Auction Site Chat forum on Pheebay.com, the participating sellers have reached a decision to start this promotion in earnest on 4th January 2009. In the few days running up to that date I expect to put a number of Pheebay members' auctions into preview on my Penny Auctions Squidoo lens as they are announced.
I also hope to welcome new sites and sellers onto the list of participants. If you are interested then come and join us at Pheebay.com. It doesn't matter which eBay alternative auction site you sell on, nor does it matter what kind of items you sell, as long as they are suitable for any eyes - in other words, no porn - and you are prepared to list an item for a 1p/1c auction start price with no reserve to run for seven days, Sunday to Sunday, 10 days (Thursday to Sunday) or 14 days. Ideally auctions should end on a Sunday simply so that buyers will find the day easier to remember but, as can be seen from time to time, we realise this is not always convenient for sellers, just let us know the end date of your auction when you wish to have it added.
To date the range of goods has covered collectables, jewellery, toys and gifts, perfumes and more practical items. The current sellers all recognise and are seeing the benefits of collective promotion which brings the attention of a wider buying public to your listings and helps you to build links around the net.
We are all getting busy with the oncoming festive season but put a sticky on your computer or a note in your diary to check out these links again at the end of December or beginning of January or join the Pheebay forum now to get involved in the planning for the restart of the Penny Auctions promotion.

- Interesting, I'm getting ready to list several items on an auction site but I can't decide which one. Not eBay though because the fees are so high and I'm not sure how long it will take my items to sell. I would like to find a site that gets decent traffic though, going to check out pheebay...

- I never had the remotest idea about any of this. I had a worker on one of my farms in Zim. who saw King George when he visited. It was the highlight of his life and he often told me about it. The worker was a great showman and had me in hysterics mimicking the great occasion. Also my Dad had a great collection of stamps from when he was a small boy. Unfortunately, lost or stolen in the farms upheaval, how sad.

- Katherine, Ah! something new to learn. I think I'd read about a type of Squidoo lens that had to do with auctions but I've only used eBay a couple of times and never ventured to any of the others. I will have to check this out! Thanks!
