ALL ABOUT WEDGWOOD BLUE JASPERWARE

Wedgwood blue jasperware has been produced by the Wedgwood company in England for about 250 years; and I believe they ceased production of this particular product in about 2000. Other "look-a-like" companies produced imitations of Wedgwood in Canada and Japan in recent years.

Wedgwood blue jasperware comes in 4 age categories:

1950-2000 - light blue, inside and out, with white embossing; marked on the base "Made in England", with a two-digit year number (i.e., 63, 78, 85, 90, etc.).

1910-1930 - dark blue outside, white glaze inside, with white embossing, marked on the base "Made in England", some times with two digit numbers indicating the number of pieces fired in the kiln at a particular time (i.e., 24, 42, 30, etc.), and sometimes a letter or symbol indicating the date and/or the particular potter.

1880-1910 - dark blue outside, white glaze inside, with white embossing, marked on the base "Wedgwood England", sometimes with two digit numbers indicating the number of pieces fired in the kiln and sometimes a letter or symbol indicating the date and/or the potter.

Prior to 1880 - dark blue outside, white glaze inside, with white embossing, marked on the base "Wedgwood", sometimes with a letter or symbol indicating the date and/or the potter.

There are several reference books on Wedgwood that you can find at your local library; but most of them do not indicate a particular value of the items included. One recent book that indicates approximate values of the older Wedgwood pieces is Wedgwood Jasper Ware: A Shape Book and Collector's Guide (Hardcover) by Michael Herman. In the reference book , "WEDGWOOD" by Wolf Mankowitz, in the edition published in 1966 by Spring Books, London, England, on page 149 is more information on the "marks" you find on the base of each Wedgwood piece.

You can purchase many Wedgwood pieces at our CHShops.com Mall Store at: Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry
You will also find many Wedgwood items listed on ebay and Replacements, Ltd..

Here are two other websites that have additional information:
The Potteries Features Wedgwood
The Potteries Wedgwood Marks.

You can type in "Wedgwood Jasperware" in your search bar and you will find several more sites to explore, including individual stores with pictures and prices.

Wedgwood For Collectors

type=textMy husband and I have been collecting Wedgwood--mostly Jasperware--for several years. My Mother-in-Law started her collection more than 50 years ago; and when she passed away in 1999, we continued to haunt antique shops and eBay for additional pieces.

As with most collectors, we very often end up with duplicate Jasperware items. So last year, we opened our online store at Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry in an effort to find a good home for these extra pieces. Take a look; and if something sparks your interest, let us know. We are fast running out of space in our display cases and would like to pass on some of our inventory so that there will be room for more discoveries. (Grin)

I have several Wedgwood reference books and would be happy to share information from them with other collectors who may have questions about Wedgwood.

From The Founding Fathers

"As a man is said to have a right to his property, he may be equally said to have a property in his rights. Where an excess of power prevails, property of no sort is duly respected. No man is safe in his opinions, his person, his faculties, or his possessions."  --James Madison, National Gazette Essay, March 27, 1792

"If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenues and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute." --Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791

Wedgwood jewelry

Various articles of personal adornment decorated with plaques of ceramic ware made by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Ltd. Such articles (including finger rings, medallions, brooches, pendants, buckles, clasps, earrings) were often made by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-95) of jasper or black basalted earthenware, sometimes as a cameo or intaglio set in a metal mount.

The mounts were of gold, silver or marcasite, or of cut steel frequently made by Matthew Boulton of Birmingham, c. 1790.

Other articles which have been made of, or decorated with, Wedgwood jasper include beads, combs, chatelaines, and scent bottles. The ground of the jasper ware is of various colours, e.g. pale blue, lilac, sage-green, yellow, and black.

Josiah Wedgwood II made, c. 1812-22, some medallions of bone China that were mounted as brooches.

Wedgewood Museum Opens in October

Wedgwood Musuem to Open in October

The long-awaited Wedgwood Museum, located at the site of the Wedgwood factory in Barlaston, UK is scheduled to open on October 24, 2008.

Some will visit Wedgwood to see the first vases which Wedgwood threw at the Etruria works which he eventually was forced to abandon in favour of Barlaston when the local coal-mining works caused the site to sink. The Portland Vase, which takes pride of place in the museum, was fiendishly difficult to throw because of the 17lb weight of clay required. It was a testament to Wedgwood's fervent desire to develop his industry as well as profit from it that he invented the pyrometer - also on display - which allowed him and generations of ceramicists to know the temperature of the coal-fired ovens in which the vases were placed.

See the entire article at: Wedgwood Museum.

And see our Wedgwood pieces available for purchase at: Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry. Stop in at our Pantry on a regular basis, as we are adding new Wedgwood pieces and other Collectibles every week.

Wedgwood Jewelry Is Now Available at Penny's Pantry

Wedgwood Egyptian Jewelry commemorating the King Tut Tour in 1976

Wedgwood Jewelry has long been considered the epitome of refined jewelry. It lends dignity and a level of sophistication to the appearance of the man or woman who wears it.

Wedgwood Jewelry used to be very hard to find. Before the advent of Online Shopping, collectors went to estate auctions, antique shops, bazaars, flea markets and jewelry stores to find them. Collectors had to "settle" for only those pieces they could find readily, and pay the price asked for them. Not any more. Thanks to Online Shopping Malls and Markets, collectors can now choose from many more Wedgwood items, at a variety of prices, and increase their collections.

We now have Wedgwood Vintage Jewelry in our CHShops.com Mall Store at Penny's Antiques & Wedgwood Pantry.
