The easiest way to find a penpal is to start writing to a friend. Most of us have friends that have moved away and we promised to write but never did. Well, now is the perfect time. You can also start by writing relatives you haven't spoken to in a while. They might be shocked at first but eventually you will start to build a relationship. Writing opens doors that conversation closes.
You can join a Snail Mail Penpal group on YahooGroups or you can join a "Find a penpal swap" on Swap-Bot.com. You could also start by making a friendship booklet or FB. With an FB people who want to be your snailmail pal will add their information so you can write them back. For information on swapping FBs visit the FB FAQ in the Links section.
If you are young and want to find a penpal friend there are some safety concerns you need to be aware of. Try visiting Kid friendly sites or ask your teacher or parent about how you can find a snailmail friend. Read some of the books I have listed below or visit your local library.

Snailmail Pals use a lot of stationery, stickers, labels, and pens. These will be your staples. Oh, and if you make FBs you'll probably need those(staples) too.Don't just write a letter, put it in an envelope and mail it out. Express yourself! Put your personality into the letter. Add your special doodles, some cute stickers, a funny joke or two-make the envelope your canvas.
Share yourself with your snailmail pal. Write about the things that make you happy. What type of music do you listen to? Do you watch TV? What classes are you taking? Do you have a job? Give your snailmail pal a glimpse into your life. It will be awkward at first but as soon as you start to learn more about your pal the letters will become easier and longer.

Not only did I discover a very nice letter from 14-year-old Amber Love of Babson Park, Fla., but also included was a delightful little doll that was actually a working ballpoint pen. Amber had designed the pattern herself, having been inspired by making toothpick dolls that were popular a few years back.
Along with the letter and the "Pen Pal " (Amber's name for the dolls) were very clear step-by-step directions, a page of illustrated directions that Amber had drawn and a photograph! Amber covered all the bases!
Following Amber's directions, I made several dolls of my own and was so delighted with the entire idea, as well as the presentation, that I called Amber during the show. Because Amber is home-schooled, she was able to be home to take the call. In answer to the questions asked, Amber said that she had been crafting for about nine years . . . since she was five years old . . . and had most recently sold about 20 of the Pen Pals.
