Ya Gotta Make Your Mark on the World! (Or At Least on Paper, eh?)

If you are a teacher, a homeschooler, a writer, or an artist (or someone who just wants to make a MARK on the world), this lens is dedicated to you and should give you many moments of browsing for that perfect marking tool. Be sure to visit regularly--because the selection of pens, pencils, and markers is set to change weekly!

From the first time a caveman used a piece of charcoal to make pictures and paintings and other marks on the wall of his cave... then the Babylonians making their marks on wet clay tablets with their stylus... the Mayans and Aztecs carving their calendars ... then the Egyptians covering the walls of their temples and buildings with heiroglyphics... and the American Indians carving their petroglyphs--including Kokopelli on their cave-dwellings and rocks around their encampments... to the Chinese calligraphy... these marks on a "medium" were the precursors to printing presses, moveable type, and the early books that were mass produced. Which, after a while provided such that everyone could learn verbatum what was in the author's mind. (This, of course, is assuming that the person seeing the marks could READ the marks, right?)

In any case, even though we now have computers and word processing applications (software) (or, for those in the "dark ages", typewriters), we still must sometimes resort to using a pencil, a pen, a marker, or even a piece of chalk or charcoal to capture some thoughts. We keep a pad of paper or a journal in our car or in our backpack or in our purse--for those off-moments when we need to jot a note or sketch an image or make a rough plan.

Pen and Pencil Inspirations...

If you dig around in this module long enough (by clicking on one of the items), you'll find something related to pens if you use keywords within the site once you get there!

Pens, Pencils, Markers.... You Use Them to Make Marks!

I've had fun with pens, pencils, crayons, and other marking tools since the first time I picked up one of them and tried to scrawl out something on something. Later, as I got older, I enjoyed learning how to write my name and to draw. Then, it was even more fun to write whole stories and then draw the pictures to go with them.

I've been writing since I was old enough to hold a color crayon. I really got into it during my elementary school years. So much so, that I've been a professional writer (and photographer and editor) for the past 26 years. And for some of that time, I was an English grammar and composition teacher.

Just because I used to teach English grammar and composition does not mean that I believe that you should begin teaching this stuff right out of the starting gate when a kid is just learning how to write. Nope. Let the kid get some volumes of writing first.... and then give a little "constructive criticism" after the kid has written some stuff. Discuss some books that the kid finds interesting--either because of the plot, characters, or setting. Then compare the kid's work to the kid's favorite book's writing... gently, of course. There are other ideas out there...

Varieties of Pens, Pencils, and Markers.... what's out there....

How do you get a kid interested in writing? (Well--here's a hint: You don't bore him to death with the grammar of conjugating verbs and things like predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives and adverbial phrases!) Nope. You let the kid have FUN with his marker. And some paper (or cardboard). And how do you do that? Nowadays you can get pens that are shaped as fish, action heros, lizards, submarines, and spaceships. You can get pens and pencils that look like twigs or have images of Disney characters, Looney Tune characters, or other pictures on them. You can get pens that are topped with Troll dolls, Barbie dolls, Transformers, and bugs. You can get pens and pencils that are way oversized (huge, in fact) and you can get the miniature ones that fit inside small notepads or pockets.

This variety gives the act of writing or drawing a sense of adventure and wonder... and fun. And I don't think it matters whether the writer or artist is 8 years old or 80 years old.

Collecting Pens? Even when the Ink Runs Out, They Are Still Fun!

(even better, when you can refill them!)

In our house, we have a cup in the kitchen by the phone, a cup in my "office" on the desk, a cup in the master bedroom on the nightstand by the bed, and a cup in the guestroom. Each cup is festooned with a wild selection of pens--for making notes of those fleeting thoughts! (I guess based on this premise, we should have another cup in the bathroom--in case one of those fleeting thoughts comes when we're sitting and "pondering"! --grin--)

I also keep extra pens in a drawer (actually more than one drawer) in my desk--as well as a drawer in the kitchen (where we also keep the phone book and an additional notepad). And some pens on the dresser (for when I'm off to work)--I keep a few in my shirt pocket.

You, see, not only am I an editor/writer--I love the feel of the pen as I write. I like pens and pencils. I like watching the marks appear on paper. It's even more fun when someone else reads the marks and forms the same words in their mind--such that we now share the same thought. Totally cool. And... it's fun to have a variety of pens and pencils (and also convenient so that when one runs out of ink, you have a quick replacement ready).
