What's The Difference Between A Pentagram And A Pentacle?

A five pointed star...and a five pointed star in a circle...

The terms pentagram and pentacle are sometimes used interchangeably.

However, there is a difference!

A Pentagram (pictured left) is a symmetrical, five pointed star with equal sides, drawn with a single line.

A Pentacle (pictured right) is a pentagram surrounded by a circle. It often takes the form of a pentagram printed on, or cut into a flat disk.

* An upright pentagram/pentacle is a 5 pointed star with one point aligned upwards. Upright pentacles and pentagrams are among the most widely used religious symbols. They have been used in many eras and by many cultures and religions of the world: by ancient Pagans, ancient Israelites, Christians, magicians, Wiccans and others.

* An inverted pentagram/pentacle is a 5 pointed star with two points aligned upwards.

Some well-known organisations and religious and spiritual groups have used/use the inverted pentagram/pentacle as their logo or symbol, e.g. The Order of the Eastern Star - a worldwide fraternal organisation based on the teachings of the Bible.

A pentagram can mean different things to different people. For some it's just a simple geometric shape, others like to doodle it as it's the "easiest" way to draw a star, some people think it's "trendy" or "alternative", for others it has a religious or symbolic meaning.

The pentagram has been used throughout history and in many diverse contexts.

For example, early Christians attributed the pentagram to the Five Wounds of Christ and from then until medieval times, it was a lesser-used Christian symbol.

In Medieval times, the pentagram was a symbol of Truth and was a protection against demons. It was used as an amulet of personal protection and to guard windows and doors. The pentagram with one point upwards symbolized summer; with two points upwards, it was a sign for winter.

Later, during the Inquisition, the Christian religion came to associate the pentagram with a Goat's Head, or the Devil in the form of Baphomet.

Later still, during the time of the Renaissance, the pentagram became regarded as symbolic of the microcosm of the human body due to the fact that an upright pentagram bears some resemblance to the shape of a human with legs and arms outstretched.

The pentagram has been linked to Alchemy, The Kabbalah, Freemasonry, Satanism, Wicca, Neo-Paganism and Astrology amongst other things.

Nowadays, you see pentagrams all over the place associated with many different things.

Pentagrams are found on police badges, military vehicles and on more than forty national flags.

Pentagrams also appear on corporate logos, fashionable clothing ranges, greetings cards and are widely associated with Neo-Pagan religions and the "occult".

However, the pentagram symbol is not exclusive to any one nationality, religion, faith or creed. It simply represents what the user wants it to represent...

The Sigil of Baphomet: The Sigil of the Baphomet: This is a pentacle form, with two points pointing upwards, one downwards, and one to each side. This is an upturned or inversed pentacle. The point-up pentangle represents the Spirituality of mankind as is used by Pagans and spiritualists although it was also used by early Christians ('victory of spirit over matter'[1]) The point-down pentangle represents the carnal side of mankind rather than the spiritual ('victory of matter over spirit'[1]) . The Sigil of the Baphomet is a design based on the upturned pentacle.

Inside the pentacle is the image of a goat, its horns filling the upper two points, its ears filling the two lateral ones, and its mouth filling the lower one. This is Satan. The goat and pentacle theme is very old, and has its origins in alchemy. The pentacle is surrounded by two circles the innermost touching the points of the pentacle. In between the two circles are 5 Hebrew characters, spelling LVTHN anticlockwise: Leviathan...

Pentagrams were used symbolically in ancient Greece and Babylonia. The pentagram has magical associations, and many people who practice Neopagan faiths wear jewelry incorporating the symbol. Christians once more commonly used the pentagram to represent the five wounds of Jesus, and it also has associations within Freemasonry
Pentagram: A pentagram is a five-pointed figure used as a magical or occult symbol by the Pythagoreans, Masons, Gnostics, Cabalists, magicians, Wiccans, Satanists, etc. There is apparently something attractive about the figure's geometry and proportions. In many symbolizations, the top point represents either the human head or a non-human Spirit. To invert the figure is considered by some as a sign of relegating Spirit to the bottom of the metaphysical heap. Others take inversion to be Satanic and on par with alleged mockeries such as inverting the cross or saying the Mass backwards. Still others find nothing particularly diabolical about inversion and use the inverted pentagram without fear of accidentally invoking the forces of evil.

I like pentagrams. They don't have any particular meaning to me personally but I associate them with paganism and an "alternative" lifestyle. I especially like the pentagram watches, they look really cool.

Gosh, the jewelry and other items are beautiful. I'd love to buy a dozen. As a Wiccan, the pentagram symbolizes the elements of earth, air, fire, and water with Spirit at the top. I think it is a beautiful symbol and wear mine proudly. We used to sell ritual items on E-Bay and I always included pentacles and pentagrams. I love the cauldrons.

This is a very beautiful lens with good information about a misunderstood symbol. 5*
