Top 10 DSLR Straps for Pentax and other Cameras

The Best Straps for your Pentax and other Cameras

This is the second installment of my photography lensology. At this point I should have had like maybe 3 lenses... but I found out that the IP range I use at home is blocked. That means I can't create any lens. Heads Up Squidoo... some of us are not spammers. So I scouted for a coffee shop with an unblocked IP range. After 26 coffee shops I found one... 36 kilometers from home. (*faints) Oh I know Squidoo is doing it for the benefit of many. Just let me rant.

Now this here lens is about camera straps. Once you have a Pentax DLSR or any other big bodied camera, a point in your life will come when you will feel the need for a better camera strap. I'm past that point and now I'd like to share with every Pentaxian and DSLR user what I found to be the top 10 DSLR straps in the planet.

Choosing the Right Camera Strap

Camera straps are very essential to a budding photographer like yourself. It protects your expensive camera systems from accidental bumps and drops. Once you drop your camera... BANG!!! Sorry. Camera straps essentialy safeguards your equipment from your environment and from yourself. It also distributes the dslr weight around your upper body evenly. This allows you to last longer on events and photowalks. Believe me... photo shoots on festivals under the hot sun can drain people easily. I personally have seen a photographer collapse because of heat stroke. (don't ask me what happened to her camera). So it is very prudent to invest in one.

Here are some tips in choosing the best Pentax DSLR camera strap. Well it's good advice for other camera systems. :-) (Am I biased? Am I? You think so? Hmmmm... I must be using a Pentax.)

  • Select the correct length. Shorter one for hand straps and longer ones for neck and shuolder straps

  • Choose the material carefully. A camera strap the rips easily is as good as having no strap at all

  • Pick a camera strap with strong closures. Some straps are attach to one or both sides of camera with a metal or plastic closures

  • Check weight requirements. A heavy camera needs a strong camera strap.

  • Pick a style that suits you. Girly style. Flamboyant. I suggest a low profile camera strap.

  • But the best tip is to visit your favorite camera store and try every strap in fron of a mirror with your camera gear.

#1: The R-STRAP

... simple and cool

This was my first camera strap. I have another but this became my favorite. I got it cheap from a friend who upgraded his camera strap to something out of science fiction. Now I like to keep a low profice when walking around with my camera. It avoids unwanted attention which result into amazing candid shots. Also, I don't like to be a mugging victim.

#2: The SunSniper

...simple, cool and probably better

Some say this is a rip-off of the R-Strap. But who cares as long as it does the job. It has improved upon the R-Strap design with the addition of a shock absorber and an embedded steel cable in the strap. This means that a thief cannot just cut through the strap when attempting to steel your camera. Nice innovation. I've seen only one photo junky having this kind of strap here in our area. Yep. She's a chick. Sadly though... she's not a Pentaxian. :-)

#3: The Spider Holster System

... professional

Probably inspired by a western movie. You know... gunsligers... six gun kid. Great design. Definitely for the professional photographer. I'd recommend for those using two DSLR bodies. I'm not yet at that level and perhaps never will reach that level. But who know one of my dear Squidoo readers might get a charitable heart and mail me another Pentax DSLR. Hoho!!! Send me A K-7. Seriously this design prevents two camera bodies hanging from your neck from banging each other.

#5: The Camera Slinger

...simple but effective

All I like about this system is that it is very simple. But it does not attract attention... but it sure needs a lot in aesthetic design. But I like it. It's lowprofile and is the choice of hi-profile photographers. It would need, in my opinion, somthing that would minimize the cameras dangling and of course an option to use it with one camera. Like I said a few hundred words ago... I will probably not reach the level of using two camera bodies unless one of you my dear readers get the notion to send me one. Yes I'll accept it even if its not a Pentax.
