Why I Picked the PENTAX K-X out of all the Great DSLRs

Pentax? What the hell is that? I told you to get a real camera?

How many times have I been admonished for not getting a Canon or a Nikon. Here in my corner of the world only the big three (CON) are recognized as real dslr cameras. Why did I choose a Pentax? Why indeed?

Maybe I find satisfaction in being different. As far as I know I'm the only one using a Pentax here. But I did consider a lot of things before I gambled on a Pentax K-x. Check out this lens to see the other dslrs I considered. Top 10 DSLRs for the NEWBIE. This lens will show what made me choose a Pentax over the others. Because as of this moment there are only two cameras in the world. Pentax and Others. :-)

Pentax Force

Straight From PENTAX

...I don't trust salesmen

This video was detrimental it introducing me to the Pentax K-X. It summarized the entirety of the K-X. The question now is: Did it convince me? Nope it didn't because I don't trust salesman. There primary job is to sell. That is there goal. So if they're asked to sell garbage then they will convince you that garbage is the in-thing. Oh I've also watched the videos of the big three. But this video planted a seed that slowly took root.

This is the WHY part.

...planning with a shoe string budget

Practicality dictates that I ask myself how much was I willing to spend? That was the first thing I considered. I checked the prices in Amazon to get a fair idea of the current prices and models. These were the candidates for my first dslr: Nikon D3000, Nikon D5000, Canon 1000D, Canon 500d, Pentax K-x, Pentax K2000. For some reason I cannot remember, I never considered Olympus.

Excellent and usefull features was a must for me. So I went about comparing features. I wanted a camera that had some of the features of a superzoom. That meant face detection, HD video, auto mode and scene customizations. I also looked for a fast burst mode, not-to-high and not-to-low megapixel count and excellent performance under low light. I also considered the positions of the controls. Fast shutter speed and quick auto focus with was also a must. The D3000, 1000D, 450D and Pentax K2000. That left me with two contenders the Nikon D5000 and the Pentax K-X

Now with only two choices left what was I to do. Both of them had all I wanted. In the end I was forced to find the nearest Nikon D5000 to hold and handle it personally. Reading writeups can only do so much. Wow!!! I was impressed by the D5000. I searched for the Pentax K-X but cannot find a copy withing a hundred mile radius. What I did was to travel to the nearest mall with a Pentax K2000 (it is said that the K-X was almost mirror copy of the K2000). that mall was like 300km away. Wow!!! I was impressed by the Pentax K2000 a.k.a Pentax K-X. Both were ergonomically perfect with the Pentax a little bit smaller.

The lens selection was again another consideration. The Nikon line of lenses is very extensive. The Pentax line was, honestly, also extensive but not as wide and broad as Nikon. BUT. When the Pentax vintage lenses are factored in... you have something equally extensive. Well you can use old lenses with Nikon dslrs but not all their lenses. This was a plus factor of Pentax because I like vintage stuff.

Actually or lets say practically speaking, it is very prudent to choose a popular dslr brand. You can borrow lenses from friends. Repair shops abound. Technical help is everywhere. But there is still the lure of being different. And that to me is very very tempting.

X marks the spot... there's treasure with the Pentax K-X. The Nikon D5000 was a chest of gold the Pentax K-X was a sack of diamonds. I went for the Pentax. It had all the capabilities of the Nikon D5000 in a smaller body. It is a better performer in low light and the menu system is idiot proofy simple. Now I'm very happy with my camera. I've already got two very very old prime lenses. One of them is so battered that I love using it beside photographers with hi-tech lenses. It's a Pentax after all.

...it's a Pentax

So what do you think?

...have I picked the right camera?

Opinions really matter in choosing a camera. My opinion is that the Pentax K-X is one of the best dslr right now. Although in the end it is the photographer holding the camera that matters. Nikonians... Canonites... Olympians... speak up!

I bought one for Christmas and am very pleased with it! For one thing, basic stuff like having an optical viewfinder and AA batteries are good. The menu is reasonably easy to get around - I haven't had to look in the manual very often.

I have been reading about the k-x for a while now. Other options I looked at are the Canon T1i and the Nikon D3100. There are pluses and minuses for all of them, but for me I am leaning towards the Pentax.
