My Favorite Viral Videos: People & Time Lapse Photography # 1 - 5

Ranked #6,343 in Culture & Society, #129,786 overall

Why I Love Time Lapse Videos Of People

People.

They come in all shapes and sizes.

They eat, they sleep, they make love, they die - maybe they even come back and do it again.

They all seem so different and yet we know that we are all so similar. Like the primitive man paintings at Lascaux, these time lapse videos build bridges through the Ether and whether we like it or not, they make us acknowledge that we are Human.

# 1: 9 months of gestation in 20 seconds

Call me sentimental but there's something timeless and beautiful about 9 months of gestation in 20 seconds - one couple's incredible time lapse photography chronicle of their pregnancy. I hope their lives turned out to be as feel-good as their video.

"Simply beautiful." youtube member doris2013

"Cute! POP goes the baby :)" youtube member persayios

"So THAT'S what was in there." youtube member mekkler

N.B.: You can also catch the behind-the-scenes video of 9 months of gestation in 20 seconds, which includes some shameless but well-natured self-pimping.

# 2: Dove: Evolution

a massive viral marketing success

Commissioned by the Anglo-Dutch multi-national Unilever, the Dove:Evolution campaign was a long time in its gestation.

It started in 2004, with the "Real Truth About Beauty" study, addressing the concerns that society's ideals of female beauty were "neither authentic nor attainable". Further, the corollary was that women's self-esteem was increasingly being eroded by these unrealistic commercial creations.

Then, in 2005, The Dove Self Esteem Fund was established to further investigate the effects of these unattainable ideals upon young women - and the Evolution video was a resulted from this study.

In 2006, the video was launched on Youtube (buoyed by a massive email campaign) to global acclaim. Company research estimated that the Dove: Evolution viral video campaign eventually generated $60 million dollars worth of publicity on TV, the internet, newspapers and magazines - not bad for a hair and make-up video!

Of course, whether that publicity had any lasting effect upon its target audience is up for debate, though I don't doubt that Dove's sales went through the roof!

"Voila - the perfect beauty!" youtube member eponce09

"We are chasing an unrealistic image of beauty. I almost died from Anorexia and am now a...public speaker. I use this video in my presentations." youtube member HayleyhfAFFT

"Brilliant. Every young girl should see this - I think it should be shown at schools." youtube member Endometriosis TV

The rather funny Dove Evolution parody, Slob Evolution in which a male is transformed with hair and makeup - but in a somewhat different way - is well worth catching, too. Dove Evolution parody was subsequently nominated for an Emmy at the 34th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards.

# 3: Noah Takes A Photo Of Himself Every Day For 6 Years

I love this video, Noah Takes A Photo Of Himself Every Day For 6 Years! It started when photographer, Noah Kalina, was 19 and continued until mid-2006, when he posted it on Youtube with Noah achieving a sudden and very public15 minutes of fame.

By the end of the year he was mixing with celebrities like Paris Hilton and was even culturally referenced in The Simpsons' episode, Eternal Moonshine Of The Simpson Mind in which Homer takes a photo of himself every day, over 39 years.

"Incredibly imaginative, I couldn't escape your gaze the whole video...I think this is a universally relevant piece of Art." youtube member HereticsPride

"This is trippy." youtube member TrentTheMegaGangster

"God, he seems to stare into your soul, like he knows every thing about you that you have ever done in your life - I fear him."" youtube member RAZfighters2

# 4: Growing A Beard

Inspired by Noah Kalina's Noah Takes A Photo Of Himself Every Day For 6 Years, "Rune" from Fredrikstad, Norway, photographed himself growing a beard over a month. It's a lot less intense than Kalina's video but still delightfully creepy and Rune's face is a fascinating canvas.

"I like the subtle and dramatic angle changes - better than just a straight ahead pic on a white wall over and over again - gives it a weird kind of stop-motion feel." youtube member TheCrab78

"What if that happened in 1 minute? Hay-hayy??" youtube member pupsicle101

Afghanistan War Documentary: Restrepo

Restrepo

Amazon Price: $11.49 (as of 02/17/2012)Buy Now

"Ninety minutes of the Afghan Korengal Valley, with no talking heads, no interviews, just the soldiers there in the valley...
...[Restrepo] is an emotional film that tells the story of the soldiers posted there but leaves any and all interpretations to the viewer...[shot in] a place few Americans could find on a map and far fewer could explain the importance of.
It's a must-see movie regardless of your politics."

Top 500 Amazon reviewer Michael A. Duvernois

"One of the pleasures of Restrepo is its surprisingly apolitical agenda. Anyone hoping that this film is a comprehensive examination of the American presence in Afghanistan will need to look elsewhere...
...[Director] Junger does an amazing job capturing the specifics of what it was like to be stationed in the Afghani conflict - from the battles to the boredom, this is an unflinching look at the realities of modern warfare."

Top 500 Amazon reviewer K. Harris

"[Restrepo] is raw, real and emotional. It touches everyone in a very deep way and helped me appreciate what our men in uniform do."

The Scary Truth About Big Business & Food: Food, Inc.

Food, Inc.

Amazon Price: $7.98 (as of 02/17/2012)Buy Now

"As the film shows - by means of interviews, animations, effective video and surveillance tapes - most of our meat comes from massive factory farms in which animals are packed in tightly, wading through their own manure, rife with disease that is only partly kept in check by pumping chickens or pigs or cattle full of antibiotics. That meat, of course, ends up in our food supply and in the fast food hamburgers and there's hardly any effective oversight for consumer safety because, as it turns out, most of the regulators for the past couple of decades have been drawn directly from prominent positions in the industries they are supposed to regulate."
Top 100 Amazon reviewer Nathan Andersen

"Every American needs to see this! I am outraged over the corruption of the big time farmers and FDA. I literally couldn't even look at beef without becoming nauseous after seeing this."
Amazon reviewer Danny & Stephanie

"This powerful, sobering, yet ultimately hopeful documentary sheds some clear light on the murky, cruel and sordid state of our modern food industry, and ends with these simple words:
'You can vote to change this system - Three times a day.'
The revolution must begin in America's heartland - but it must also include us all.
Who suffers from this current system?
The farmers (world-wide), the workers, and the consumers.
Who benefits?
The businesses and the politicians who work for them."

Am American School & The Holocaust: Paper Clips

Paper Clips

Amazon Price: $12.96 (as of 02/17/2012)Buy Now

"Paper Clips documents a project in the Whitwell, TN Middle School in which principal Linda Hooper leads dedicated students and teachers in a lesson on the meaning of the Holocaust - Whitwell is a lower middle class rural community that is almost exclusively white Christian.
The members of the community set out to collect six million paper clips, one for each Jew killed by the Nazis. As word spread, contributions came from all over the country and indeed, the world. "

Top 500 Amazon reviewer David E. Levine

"Over the course of four years, awareness of the destructiveness of the Holocaust and its effect on the world begins to take root in the teachers, the students, the Principals and the whole community of mostly white Protestant Americans in this film.
By the end of [Paper Clips], the reality of the devastation that prejudice and hatred can cause is grasped not only by the students and teachers of Whitwell Middle School, but by the viewers of the movie as well. Added to the documentary are visits to the school by Holocaust survivors who share their stories with the students, teachers and people from the community. All are moved to tears"

Amazon reviewer Tracy M. Lewis

"My only personal connection to [Paper Clips] or the Holocaust is that I am also a member of the human race. This is possibly history's most powerful documentary about humanity from every angle. Watch it, give it, discuss it, share it; weep for sorrow and weep for joy, celebrate the human spirit."
Amazon reviewer C. Bright
