(CNN) -- Diana, Princess of Wales, had a love-hate relationship with the media, but in November 1995 she sat down for a candid conversation with the British Broadcasting Corp.
In an interview with Martin Bashir, Diana talked about her battle with bulimia, her anguish over her husband's involvement with another woman, and her own affair with James Hewitt.
The princess also discussed her role in the monarchy. Although she realized she would never be crowned, Diana said she hoped to reign as "Queen of Hearts."

Princess Diana was someone whom I admired greatly because she was very real and down to earth; unafraid to tell the truth, or hide her true feelings. In fact, she let her true self shine to all who could see, and it is a shame that the royal family never truly understood her.
