(CNN) -- Diana, Princess of Wales, had a love-hate relationship with the media, but in November 1995 she sat down for a candid conversation with the British Broadcasting Corp.
In an interview with Martin Bashir, Diana talked about her battle with bulimia, her anguish over her husband's involvement with another woman, and her own affair with James Hewitt.
The princess also discussed her role in the monarchy. Although she realized she would never be crowned, Diana said she hoped to reign as "Queen of Hearts."

Although she was a beautiful woman on the outside, Princess Diana was an even more beautiful and amazing woman on the inside. Given her circumstances, she unfortunately never fully understood just how beautiful was, and how much she was loved by everyone around the world.Princess Diana was someone whom I admired greatly because she was very real and down to earth; unafraid to tell the truth, or hide her true feelings. In fact, she let her true self shine to all who could see, and it is a shame that the royal family never truly understood her.
