Meet Pepe!

Pepe was one of a litter of kittens who lived outside, eating scraps and was full of fleas. He was missing big chunks of fur and was so dirty! One day soon after I had moved to Panama, a friend came over with a burlap bag. He opened it up and inside was the tiniest kitten I had ever seen. He was the last one in a litter and no one wanted him.

He had lived outside his whole short life which was obvious because he was filthy and covered with fleas. I loved him instantly. I didn't have to think very long before his name came to me, Pepe.

This little creature became the centre of my life in this strange new country, and we were inseparable. I was in a country where I didn't know anyone and didn't speak spanish so he was my constant companion. I gave him baths (which he hated and yoweled all the way through), and gently blow dried him so he wouldn't get cold. At night he slept curled up in my neck or right next to my face with his paws touching my cheek. I learned never to move in my sleep for fear that I would crush him. He was about the size of an orange.

Right away I could tell he was sassy. He had such a huge personality and was so playful! He was so small he could fit into one of my hands and all the neighbours knew him by name.

Outside my front door was the garbage bin where vultures would perch eating scraps. In the morning when I took Pepe out to pee I had to watch him as the vultures had their eye on him, I am sure they thought he would make a tasty snack.

Outside my kitchen door lived a huge cockroach that Pepe liked to chase around. It seemed like they were almost the same size. It was his favourite toy.

There was no kitten food you could buy in the tiny place where I lived so I bought little Pepe jars of baby food and gave him a spoonful a couple of times a day. He loved it. My next door neighbours saw me coming home one day with a bag full of baby food and asked if I was pregnant! I said no, it is for Pepe. I think they thought I was crazy.

But, the neighbours loved Pepe. When he got a little bigger (than a mouthful for a vulture) I would leave the front door open and he would sneak over to the neighbours house and they would feed him and play with him. I found out that Rolando, the quiet older man who lived next door with his wife and daughter would pick him up and cuddle with him, and they would often be found sleeping curled up together in the afternoon.

Everyone in the little strip of houses where I lived knew Pepe. No one knew my name, but they all knew Pepe's. They would see me and ask how he was in spanish and I got good at saying that he was well. Everybody loved him. He was the cutest baby cat in the world.

Now, I have moved to a different place in Panama, a tiny village up in the mountains. Pepe has a huge dog to play with (he loves to wrestle with her), and he has a huge yard to explore. He spends his days climbing trees, chasing gecko's and stalking beasts in the foliage. He is a very happy animal. At night he comes inside and sleeps curled up with my boyfriend and I, but before sleeps there is always some vigorous play which he loves. I always used to play with him in the bed, under the covers when he was a kitten. He has always been a very saucy boy.

Pepe in my lap.

He is adorable.

Here Pepe is about a month old. This is just after I got him. He loved to sit in my lap and play with the strings of my pyjamas. I am not sure if you can tell how small he is, but he could fit into my hand. He is really tiny.

Photos of Pepe

isn't he the cutest?

The reason Pepe's second name is "basura" (the Spanish word for garbage) is that he loved to get into the garbage. I don't think it was the garbage that he was after, he just liked being inside the garbage can. It was amazing that such a tiny creature could make such a big mess.

Pepe's Favourite Toy.

His Shark

Pepe Loves his Shark

This shark is Pepe's favourite toy. For a long time it was bigger than he was, but after a while he grew and once he was bigger than the shark he loved to sleep all curled up with it which is adorable. I took some pictures of him curled up with his shark on my lap.

Pepe in the Hammock

He is a crazy beast.

Pepe loves being in the hammock. One day when my boyfriend and I were lying in the hammock Pepe decided to join us and proceeded to go insane. Thankfully, Zach had his iphone and captured some of the craziness.

What I love about Pepe

Pepe is one of the best things that has happened to me. I love his saucy personality and his complete lack of fear. Sometimes I think that he doesn't know that he is a cat, as he loves to wrestle with his sister (Sadie the dog) and his cousin (Lucas the dog). He definitely wears the pants. Small, cat pants.

Where did Pepe come from?

Pepe at the river.Pepe was part of a litter that ended up living in the yard of my friend's house. ALL of the kittens managed to find homes except little Pepe which is why my friend brought him to me one day. He was the tiniest kitten I had ever seen. He had big patches of fur missing, was crawling with fleas and was very dirty. He also had a big cut on his nose that took weeks to heal. He looked pretty rough, like a little ragamuffin.

My friend was alarmed when I proceeded to spoil this little cat by letting him inside the house (horror!), feeding him baby food (my gods!) and letting him sleep in my bed (say it aint so!!!) He said this was the luckiest Panamanian cat in the world and was treated better than most Panamanians.

Now Pepe is a little more than a year old and he is healthy and very happy. He lives happily with Sadie, his dog sister (an Australian Sheppard), and visits often with Lucas (my mother's dog). Lucas and Pepe play for hours. We will have to capture this on video as it is hilarious. Coming soon.

Where did Pepe get his name?

There is a story to this...

Pepe is cute.Soon after arriving in Panama I learned that Panamanians all have 4 names. At least all the ones I had met. Apparently this is common. In Canada we are used to dealing with 2, sometimes 3 names, but here 4 is the standard. Although the name Pepe came to me right away, I knew I would soon have to come up with 3 more. Here is where they each came from.

1. Pepe. Dunno why, but it didn't take very long for it to come to me. He looked like a Pepe.

2. Basura. Basura is the Spanish word for garbage. Pepe was always knocking over all the garbage cans in the house because he liked to get inside them. This made him very dirty and only necessitated more baths (which he hated). He was so infamous that that December one of my main Christmas presents was a covered garbage can.

3. Diablo. Diablo is the Spanish word for devil. Now this seems mean for such an angelic looking little baby cat, but he was always running around like he was on fire and getting into things like a little devil.

4. Del Toro. This name I gave him because it is the name of my most favourite place in Panama, Bocas Del Toro. Everyone should go there because it is amazing.

And there you have it, his full name.

Pepe Basura Diablo Del Toro.

Such a big name for such a little cat.

Pepe's First Christmas

He loves presents.

Pepe loves presentsPepe loved Christmas. He loved the tree (wiping it out several times), he loved batting around the ornaments, but he especially loved lying in the presents.

Pepe's pet

The cockroach

the cockroachWhen Pepe was tiny, there was a cockroach that lived outside my kitchen door. He loved to chase around this cockroach and would be waiting at the door in the morning so he could go out and track him down. The cockroach was trying desperately to get away from Pepe, but to Pepe, it was a big game. The cockroach was about half Pepe's size, and although a bit gross, it was pretty amusing to watch him terrorizing this poor beast.

Pepe likes to get inside things.

the toolbox.

Pepe in a toolboxWhenever Zach or I are out in the garden, no matter what we are doing, Pepe is right there with us. Participating. Getting onto things. Getting under things. Getting into things.

CATS vs DOGS

Pepe in a basket.

He is silly.

Pepe loved this basket. I don't know what it was about it, but no matter where I put it, he would get into it. Sometimes he would go crazy running around inside it, and sometimes he would just lounge in it, as in this picture.

Pepe is an adult.

and I use the term loosely.

Pepe the man catPepe is now a little over a year old and he has grown into a healthy adult. I still will always think of him as a baby, but he is officially a man cat. To me he is still as cute and handsome as he was when he was a baby. He still has more energy than a class full of kindergartners, and likes to tear around the garden chasing frogs, gecko's and anything else he sees.

Here is a picture of him now.

How you can tell if your cat is plotting to kill you.

About me.

Pepe and I on the trampolineI am a Canadian girl who sold all her belongings and left to chase my dreams in Panama. Little did I know (but I hoped with every molecule in my being) that all of my dreams would come true.

Little Pepe is one of the best things that has happened to me here. My little white Panamanian cat makes me smile every day :)

This is us on the trampoline. See, he loves the trampoline. How many cats love the trampoline?? He is awesome.

Panama Animal League

They are awesome.

The Panama Animal League is a group of 3 women who care for Panamanian street animals. They take animals off the street and take them to the vet, pay for medication, have them spayed or neutered, bring them into their homes to feed and care for them. The eventual goal is to get strays off the streets of Panama and into permanent homes with people who will love and take care of them. This is a wonderful organization with women who work tirelessly to help these unloved and abandoned animals.

PAL also organizes community spay and neuter clinics so that street animals and local animals can be spayed and neutered affordably.

Please see their facebook page, and if you feel moved to, please consider donating to them. They do amazing work.

Why thank you! He was pretty hard to resist and I really lucked out because he is a very spunky boy and very sweet when he is not terrorizing wildlife. ;)
