What's a Chicago Pepper and Egg Sandwich?

Throughout late winter and spring, people across Chicago enjoy a special seasonal treat on Friday nights - the Chicago Style Pepper and Egg Sandwich! A city that is rooted in Catholicism, Chicago also has a thriving food culture. When immigrants from Catholic countries like Italy came to Chicago and opened up food stands and restaurants, they needed to find something to replace meat on Fridays during the season of Lent, when Catholics abstain from eating meat. Thus, the pepper and egg sandwich was born!

Consisting of green peppers and eggs fried up with salt and pepper and put onto a French bread roll, the Pepper and Egg Sandwich must be tasted to be truly appreciated. Even though the practice of abstaining from meat during Fridays in Lent has decreased in recent times, Chicagoans of all faiths still look forward to the Pepper and Egg Sandwiches during the Lenten season. Even if you don't live in Chicago, you can read on to learn how to make your own Chicago-Style Pepper and Egg Sandwich below!

Lenten Recipes - From a Chicago Catholic Priest!

"Check my DNA and you'll find tomato sauce," quips Fr. Dominic Grassi, ardent gourmand, amateur chef, and full-time pastor on Chicago's North Side. Fr. Grassi has long been stirred by the combination of good food and good stories, and this mixture is the inspiration for his latest book, Bumping into God in the Kitchen. All his literary and culinary talents are on display in this collection of fifty poignant, funny, inspiring, and at times educational stories. Readers will discover, for example, that the dreaded dandelion originally was brought to America to be cultivated as a delicacy! Each of his personal stories in some fashion relates to food and ties into the love of God in our daily lives. Grassi knows very well that reading about food makes a person hungry, so he has also served up his favorite recipes throughout the book. The cuisine? Italian, of course. "After all," Grassi writes, "it was an Italian who invented the fork."

Bumping into God in the Kitchen creates an atmosphere of convivial warmth where friends share stories of God's grace over plates of good food. It's a book that reveals the heart of a dedicated and beloved priest--a priest who just happens to know a good ravioli when he tastes one.

Pepper and egg sandwiches are so good! For the very best pepper and egg sandwich in Chicago I recommend going to Punky's in Bridgeport. . .26th Street and Wallace. It's to die for, every time I'm in the area I stop in for one.

Nope, haven't had a pepper and egg sandwich. I have had scrambled eggs on tortilla wraps with salsa and cheese with jalapenos... that's pretty good, too...
