This is part of Pepperjam Networks continuing education program for affiliates. This ongoing series of interviews with affiliates provides an insight into how each affiliate marketer got his/her start in affiliate marketing. It also gives the affiliate marketer an opportunity to explain what they are doing now.

Sam Harrelson - Interview #1

"I initially got my start in affiliate marketing on the email and lead gen side of things. I taught 10th grade English after moving back to South Carolina from graduate school in 2002 but realized I needed a job that was closer to my home. So, I stumbled into a position with an email marketing firm in Columbia, SC. We started a CPA network (AdDrive) and that's when I got heavily involved in the affiliate side of things."

Scott Hazard - Interview #2

"In a nutshell, I was a merchant and got tired of affiliates outperforming me due to the flexibility and diversity available to affiliates. The Affiliate Marketing industry allows someone to sit at home on their laptop and run circles around a merchant who has inventory, shelf space, employees, utility bills and so many other expenses and burdens to deal with on a daily basis. These elements of being a merchant keep you from being nimble and able to 'shift gears' on a moment's notice when opportunity arises. Of course some of the large merchants with deep pockets have this flexibility, but that was not my case."

Rosalind Gardner - Interview #3

"Sometime back the dark ages of late 1997, I happened upon a banner ad that read "Webmasters Make Money" which was too enticing (and at the time, quite unusual) to ignore, so I clicked on it and found myself on the affiliate program signup page for the One and Only dating service network which included a cursory explanation about affiliate marketing. Recurring commissions of fifty percent of the monthly membership fee sounded like a decent prospect, so I started a little dating service review site for singles called Sage-Hearts.com. The site is still my primary affiliate breadmaker."

Colin McDougall - Interview #4

"I had recognized that "this new internet thing" had huge potential for making some extra cash to pay the bills so I was actively researching how the internet could make money when, while at work, I received an email from my buddy Chuck asking for help in his internet business. I responded to Chuck's email within seconds after he sent it out to his friends and family email list. Chuck was working with James Martell teaching a system of making money online and boy did I nail it. Within only a few months my income from affiliate programs was at $15,000 / month and quickly shot up to $60,000 / month. I couldn't stay at the "real job" any longer."

Zac Johnson - Interview # 5

"I would eventually go on to join programs like AllAdvantage that would "pay you to surf", and run the Pacific Coast pillow affiliate program banners on my sites (which paid only .01 per click, and a payment minimum of $100 so basically no one got paid :) . I even spent some time on web hosting affiliate programs, that I would pitch to companies in AOL Business Chat Rooms, which was successful! I would then go on to focus my efforts on the Amazon.com affiliate program and send them over $100,000 in sales, but only earn a low 5-15% commission on all sales. I did this by creating niche celebrity pages and sold books and movies relating to specific celebrities. As affiliate marketing kept expanding, so did my interest and dedication..."

Harrison Gevirtz - Interview #6

"I purchased a turnkey myspace website script and made a simple website and was able to turn the $15-20 I spent on a Domain & The script into about a grand. I continued to work on my site, and eventually made my own website that was not turnkey. After months of struggle with various ad networks playing games (Adsense banned me before I even had a chance to make any money (I REALLY didn't click my ads..but who cares) I started reading about affiliate marketing with search, etc and tried out some direct linking to affiliate offers on my websites via Banners, Links etc..."
