Ron Passfield interviewed by Kris Jones, CEO of Pepperjam Network

On 14 August 2008, Kris Jones, CEO of Pepperjam Affiliate Marketing Network, interviewed me about Squidoo and affiliate marketing. He was particularly interested in the benefits that Squidoo provides over blogging.

I explained in the interview that the real marketing benefits occur when Squidoo is treated as the marketing hub and other approaches such as blogging, article marketing, Facebook, Twitter, etc are treated as the spokes.

Pepperjam Network Testimonial - Shawn Collins

"Even after all these years using Commission Junction on the merchant and affiliate side, I still find it terribly clumsy to find what I want. With Pepperjam Network it is quick and easy. Pepperjam Network is what an affiliate network would look like if it were built from a wish list from both the affiliate and merchant perspective," said Shawn Collins, Cofounder of Affiliate Summit.

Pepperjam Chat: affiliates communicate with merchants

Pepperjam Chat facilitates communication between affiliates (publishers) and merchants (advertisers). This cool chat feature operates in real-time to enable affiliates and merchants to get to know each other and collaborate for mutual benefit.

When you click on the Pepperjam Chat tab as an affiliate you will see a listing of all the merchants you have partnered with. Each row in the list will have the name of the main merchant contact and an icon indicating whether they are online and available for a chat. Affiliates are also given a dedicated email address for communicating in less urgent situations.

Pepperjam Chat allows you as an affiliate to explore with the merchant the key features of their product /service and their competitive advantage. It enables you to chat with the merchant about the availability of private bonuses, coupons, special discounts or tailored creatives. You can work with the merchant to develop creative, mutually beneficial promotion campaigns that bring both of you more money.

No longer will advertisers hide behind a faceless affiliate marketing network. Pepperjam Chat will help you build a relationship with the merchant. This innovative system also provides the merchant with unparalleled communication capability to forge strategic partnerships with their affiliates. Pepperjam Chat is a linchpin in Pepperjam Network's approach to creating transparency for affiliates and merchants.

Pepperjam Chat, as a leading-edge communication facility, provides Pepperjam Network with a competitive advantage over other affiliate marketing networks such as ClickBank and Commission Junction.

PepperjamAds - advertising widget to generate contextual ads

PepperjamADS is an affiliate marketing widget that you can use to create ad blocks featuring your merchant partners' products and services.

The merchant determines the content of their respective ads but as the affiliate you get to choose how they are displayed. You can create ad blocks promoting only one merchant or multiple merchants.

The ad blocks come in various sizes such as 486X60 or leaderboard size. They can be displayed horizontally or vertically. Each ad contains a hyperlinked header and a description.

You can use PepperjamAds to create an adblock around a theme, e.g. designer clothes or to display a range of merchants across different product areas.

The great flexibilty is that you can contextualise the ads by choosing the merchants that are relevant to your promotion.

You can use the affiliate marketing widget on blogs (such as Blogger.com) and websites. Merchants can adjust the content of their ad blocks in real time to create a change in their marketing message.

Merchants also provide affiliates with text links, product feeds, banners, dynamic rich media and email messages.

Sam Harrelson - Interview #1
"I initially got my start in affiliate marketing on the email and lead gen side of things. I taught 10th grade English after moving back to South Carolina from graduate school in 2002 but realized I needed a job that was closer to my home. So, I stumbled into a position with an email marketing firm in Columbia, SC. We started a CPA network (AdDrive) and that's when I got heavily involved in the affiliate side of things."
Scott Hazard - Interview #2
"In a nutshell, I was a merchant and got tired of affiliates outperforming me due to the flexibility and diversity available to affiliates. The Affiliate Marketing industry allows someone to sit at home on their laptop and run circles around a merchant who has inventory, shelf space, employees, utility bills and so many other expenses and burdens to deal with on a daily basis. These elements of being a merchant keep you from being nimble and able to 'shift gears' on a moment's notice when opportunity arises. Of course some of the large merchants with deep pockets have this flexibility, but that was not my case."
Rosalind Gardner - Interview #3
"Sometime back the dark ages of late 1997, I happened upon a banner ad that read "Webmasters Make Money" which was too enticing (and at the time, quite unusual) to ignore, so I clicked on it and found myself on the affiliate program signup page for the One and Only dating service network which included a cursory explanation about affiliate marketing. Recurring commissions of fifty percent of the monthly membership fee sounded like a decent prospect, so I started a little dating service review site for singles called Sage-Hearts.com. The site is still my primary affiliate breadmaker."
Colin McDougall - Interview #4
"I had recognized that "this new internet thing" had huge potential for making some extra cash to pay the bills so I was actively researching how the internet could make money when, while at work, I received an email from my buddy Chuck asking for help in his internet business. I responded to Chuck's email within seconds after he sent it out to his friends and family email list. Chuck was working with James Martell teaching a system of making money online and boy did I nail it. Within only a few months my income from affiliate programs was at $15,000 / month and quickly shot up to $60,000 / month. I couldn't stay at the "real job" any longer."
Zac Johnson - Interview # 5
"I would eventually go on to join programs like AllAdvantage that would "pay you to surf", and run the Pacific Coast pillow affiliate program banners on my sites (which paid only .01 per click, and a payment minimum of $100 so basically no one got paid :) . I even spent some time on web hosting affiliate programs, that I would pitch to companies in AOL Business Chat Rooms, which was successful! I would then go on to focus my efforts on the Amazon.com affiliate program and send them over $100,000 in sales, but only earn a low 5-15% commission on all sales. I did this by creating niche celebrity pages and sold books and movies relating to specific celebrities. As affiliate marketing kept expanding, so did my interest and dedication..."
Harrison Gevirtz - Interview #6
"I purchased a turnkey myspace website script and made a simple website and was able to turn the $15-20 I spent on a Domain & The script into about a grand. I continued to work on my site, and eventually made my own website that was not turnkey. After months of struggle with various ad networks playing games (Adsense banned me before I even had a chance to make any money (I REALLY didn't click my ads..but who cares) I started reading about affiliate marketing with search, etc and tried out some direct linking to affiliate offers on my websites via Banners, Links etc..."

Well, I joined a couple of months ago, but didn't start using my account there until this week, so I haven't had time ti make any money with PJ yet, but I like how their program is set up. Building links and getting banners is much easier with PJ than it is with LinkShare and Commision Junction, (I haven't had much luck with either of them) and is similar to the system used by AllPoster and Art.com (both of which I find really easy to use.) In the past year, I've signed up for about 20 different affiliate programs, and found most of the too hard to build links with. So far I've stuck with the 4 I mentioned here, because they are the easiest to use.

I think I'm going to end up canceling most of my affiliate accounts and just stick with PepperJam, AllPosters, Amazon, and Art.com, because they are the easiest to build link with, and easiest to keep track of.
