- Great review :)
I bought one of these devices after about 4 mins of checking it out at a PC show. It was obvious it was something worth playing around with (ok, I admit, i'll buy anything bright and shiny with a screen lol).
As supplied from new, they unfortunately do need several Internet updates that can be very awkward for this Linux model (Flash Player is the main thing as it's only version 7 and Pepper-Linux refuses to be updated in the tests I've done).
However, that aside, here are the good points for geeks :). . . . .
It's all built around a standard BIOS and laptop design, so within 5 days of opening the box, I now have Windows XP Pro on mine instead, and even with just its 550MHz CPU (aprx) and 256Mb DDR RAM installed, this little thing flies along far faster than i'd ever have expected. Even with Service Pack 2 installed now, there seems very little change in performance.
The only sad point for me, is that it uses the 1.8 hard drive standard, but i'd have liked to have a much bigger drive fitted. 1.8" drives are still far too rare & expensive here in the UK. The 20Gb it comes with will just have to be coupled with a more useful external USB 2 drive instead, so more of a preference than a problem :)
So basically, my own recommendation for these devices is, attach a USB hub, mouse, full keyboard, CD ROM, and by pressing F1 during BOOT, you can gain full control just like on anything else. Clean the drive off of the outdated Linux, get an up-to-date one installed (or XP of course) and away you go.
(the only thing XP hasn't been ok with so far is the touch-screen drivers, but i'm working on that).
