Perfecting the Golf Weight Shift
How many things do we need to remember to do in the golf swing: one piece take away, feep your left arm straight, keep your right arm close to your side, shift 80% of your weight to your trailing leg, what starts the down swing(?), keep your head down, shift your weight to the leading leg, hit the ball first then the ground, hit down on the ball, hit through the ball, release your hands, follow through, etc.
My goodness, it's a wonder we ever make good contact with the golf ball.
Well, I am going to teach you a very simple technique that will help you have the perfect golf weight shift, every single time, and once you get used to it you will not have to think about doing it while you swing.
Imagine you are standing on the face of a large clock. Directly in front of you is 12:00 o'clock. Now take your normal golf stance. For right handed golfers, imagine your right foot is standing on 3:00 o'clock and your left foot is standing on 9:00 o'clock.
Now, as you start your golf swing, move your right hip toward 4:00 o'clock then continue your back swing. And, just as you start your downswing move your left hip toward the 10:00 o'clock position.
Like anything new, this golf weight shift technique will feel awkward at first but once you build this into your golf swing you will love the results you get. At first, don't even make a golf swing. Just set up in your normal golf setup.....now shift your right hip slightly to the 4:00 o'clock position. Now where is your weight? About 70% on your right leg.....exactly the way it should be. Now, shift your left hip toward 10:00 and where is your weight? About 70% on the left leg.....exactly as it should be. Easy, right?
You can practice this at home or on the range. And, you want to practice it frequently until it is an ingrained part of your golf swing. Normally I recommend that you NOT think about the mechanics of your golf swing when you play a round of golf, but if you make this golf weight shift technique your only swing thought, it will keep you from thinking about the 15 other things you normally think about during your golf swing, which will help you.
Try this simple tip for the perfect golf weight shift and then let me know how it worked for you in the guestbook at the bottom of this page.
I strongly recommend that every golfer develop a simple, repeatable golf swing to lower your scores and make golf the enjoyable activity it was intended to be. If you want to develop a simple, consistent golf swing I recommend reading: The Simple Golf Swing System. This book has helped me take well over 20 strokes off my score and I am certain it will do the same for you. Check out the Simple Golf Swing System here.
