Love hot chocolate! The MOST hot chocolate I ever made at one time was during a recess in a 6th grade age boys soccer tournament. It was a very cold day, too cold for my team and the visiting team to stand around for 2 hours outside for their next game, so I took them all, along with their coaches, back to my house for endless rounds of hot chocolate to warm them up! :). Nothing like it! :)

I need to try some of your tips. When I get hot chocolate when I'm out somewhere I'm always disappointed. It's basically brown hot water. Bleck! Then I tried some hot cocoa (don't remember where) and it was like hot sugar water. Nothing chocolate in either case. Guess I need to try to make my own at home.

Mmmm... me hungry! How on earth can someone make that leaf pattern on top of the chocolate? I saw it in the Green Hornet movie and I've wanted to learn ever since!

  • ShandiGP Jan 19, 2012 @ 11:03 am | delete
If the hot chocolate is particularly sweet I add a touch of sea salt to the top. It brings out the fruity cocoa flavor while making the sweetness, which is often too much for me, more enjoyable (think a dark chocolate covered pretzel).

Great lens...I'm including it in the food & drink section of my Favorite Lenses lens.

Oh also another idea for mixing the powder (or syrup) thoro... I have this little battery powered hand mixer I bought at Ikea for $2.99. I LOVE it. I also use it when I make chocloate milk. Its mostly to mix drinks & to froth milk (i think) on top of your hot drinks.

I also like Hot 'cocoa' with milk. It jsut tastes like water if there isn't at least some milk in it. (we to are a 2% house) but to me up to whole milk or cremer can be put it in it. The creamier tasting the better. (& I LOVE mini mellows on top)

I actually like my hot coco with water ... I know, I'm in the minority on that one.
I get the unsweetened cocoa powder in the baking section and add hot water. That's it! No sugar.

When I travel,I have occasionally gotten a hot chocolate in almond milk. Hmm, that's a treat for sure, and only at those times away form home after a good day of walking/hiking.

You sure know how to tempt with a delightfully delicious lens. I have a new chocolate milk experiment recipe I recently played with using a bit of homemade buttermilk cream with whole milk chocolate and a spoonful of strawberry Greek yogurt - very decadent I'm sure it would be delicious hot as well.
  • SquidooMBA Jan 15, 2012 @ 7:22 pm | delete
Great lens. Hot cocoa (milk) rules> Hot chocolate (water)=no thanks. I have a Gaggia Classic Espresso Machine (and a lens about it as well) and use it to steam milk for hot cocoa. I love the fact that I can use the steam wand to make microfoam even for my hot cocoa. The temperature you don't want to exceed is 180 degrees. Anything above that and you begin to scorch the milk. Most coffee shops will steam the milk to 140 at a minimum but don't go over 180.

  • jimmyworldstar Dec 19, 2011 @ 1:34 am | delete
I wouldn't put salt in my hot chocolate, that ruins the sweetness. Some pieces of chocolate bar that will melt is always good to have. A thin wafer is good as a snack to go with it. A little dab of whip cream and maybe some Baileys or Kahlua is a great midnight treat.

    Great lens!

I don't have a special hot cocoa appliance, but I do have a special pint-size pot to heat the milk. I've also got a special cocoa mug (that I've had since I was a kid).

Since it's warm here (in NY) now, lately I've been making my own version of frozen hot chocolate (cocoa, sugar, a little half&half, and ice cubes --- whipped up in the blender. It's a chocolate smoothie!

I'm so glad to have discovered the frozen variations so that now I can enjoy it year-round! Of course, as soon as I posted them, the weather where I live got cold again....

The best hot chocolate for us is Jaques Torres Wicked. It is like nothing you have ever tasted before. Also Marie Belle Aztec is a close second. We have had both prepared in their in-house cafes in NYC and have made both at home. Either way they are great. You can order off their websites too.
